  1. Re:What is love? on Love Under a Microscope · · Score: 1

Well, I'm glad you asked that. Upon further inspection, I've thought about it some more. I think there are several reasons why with many interpretations that you must find and choose which best (if not all) applies to your life /situation.

    1) The Simple Truth - "Love Thine Enemy"

    2) I have had friends that have used the expression "Killing with kindness". It means that any ill-treatment by your enemy does not affect you and you are strong in your convictions. It shows you are not quick to judgement. Being kind on top of that to them manifests moral resolve.

    3) If you see the term "enemy" as a friend who you disagree/conflict with. Again, it's about looking beyond the present to the greater goal of the relationship. Perhaps a middle ground or balance can be obtained? It's not suggesting to be weak or not fight. Think about a football game where both teams battle it out on the field but are men enough to congratulate and shake hands after the game (i.e sportsmen-like conduct).

4)Sometimes, to achieve [agrape] love, you have to manifest "tough love" as when a parent punishes their kids because they care for them.

  2. Re:What is love? on Love Under a Microscope · · Score: 1

Good post. However, I somewhat disagree on one of your terminologies, that being of "Love is the act of the will whereby another individual is placed ahead of yourself." I would like to clarify that statement just a bit. I think the love you are referring to here is [agrape] love, which is unconditional or a long-term love. Agrape love is something that is built over a long period of time whereby that bond created between 2 individuals is greater and more valuable than the love for one's own self (egotism). It looks past any present and/or past conflict between each individual to the great whole. This agrape love isn't "putting someone on a pestal" or idoltry, which is how I believed you explained it. I also think that each version of love can be graphed on a cartesian coordinate system where AGRAPE (+Y-axis), PHILEO (+X-axis), STORGE (-X-axis), and EROS(-Y-axis). Each relationship plots their own graph whereby the ultimate goal is to create and obtain AGRAPE but not at the expense of the others but by summing them up.

If the situation were reversed, would the linux/BSD/Mac communities candidly respond to any questions from Mike and MicroSoft? I think not.

The simplest answer lies where Oracle needs to provide this sort of information to Oracle DBA's and its users on a "need-to-know" basis whereby you log on to their website and become a paying-member for the latest news, security updates, and services (consenting to a non-disclosure agreement). Oracle can easily get away with this as opposed to Microsoft in the OS market because most people who own Oracle are highly trained and need to know this mission critical information.

I don't know what his answer would be but I certainly would. It'd be a great experiment to say the least. I think the key issue would be setting up a class structure for all those engineers (an OS to manage the OS design). I would think dividing each engineer into groups of 3's and spending 3 hours each day with that group would be start, where upon an arbitrary leader would make the implementation decisions after they've had weeks of discussion on each design concept. (A Sierpinski Triangle social structure to reduce as many "holes" as possible)

That's how I would do it at least if someone offered it to me. I'm just a entry-level CS major so I don't know if that would be the best team design.

What would the rest of you do if someone offered you that deal?

Actually, if white people were the dominant culture, why do you see some white kids pretending to be black (and buying CDs from DeathRow Records)?

Yeah, racism exists everywhere on both sides. I've talked to a few black women and they've told me that they don't date white guys. They've always said it's a "preference." I see this as the same "preference" (racism) if a white employer doesn't want to hire a black person. I'm quite sure this is happens vice-versa as well. So what do we do to fix this? All one can do is to try to open people's minds to what really matters and take the appropriate steps to a well-balanced society. However, if both sides want equal-opportunity-racism, there is not much that can be done.

In the end, I'm all about someone with maturity and sensibility (class), regardless of what their skin-tone is. All that is far and few between because everyone wants to be happy and have some fun in their life.

At one time in my life, I was in a cubicle next to a redneck/hillbilly who could barely speak english as well.

The moral of the story is that we should reward excellence and not ignorance. Of course, some people need assistance to be able to attain the skills to succeed (Example: I'd like to see any SysAdmin look after 1000 boxes on the old win3.1wfw and not complain for an "upgrade" to do the best they can for their job).

In the end, there's malfeasance on both sides. I think affirmative action is ridiculous, however I think there needs to be more investment into the black community for education, whereby it meets or exceeds the national standard. To me, this seems to be the only solution to the problem, unless someone can come up with something better. I'd like to hear it.

Yeah, there will always be racism on both sides but what can both sides do to fix the main problem(s) at hand that occur on both sides of the table?
