The problem with income tax is that so many people avoid it or evade it alltogether. The so called poor don't need to pay it - they get state handouts; and the rich get around it. Leaving the hard working middle classes to pick up the tab.

You're right to point out that this is nothing new. Here at Flat Earth Technologies we proposed some time ago on using young children to mine for lead. They are ideal for scavenging lead paints from various small objects and lead from the environment in general; while concentrating the lead in brain tissue. Unfortunately this proposal appears to have been rejected...

We at Flat Earth technologies have been commisioned by Hollywood to make some minor script and casting changes. I am authorised to reveal some of these miniscule alterations.

In order to appeal to the wider audience we shall make Arthur Dent a jedi knight who will be played by Mark Hamill. Ford Prefect will be renamed Han Solo and will probably be played be Harrison Ford. Marvin will need to be replaced, as a paranoid robot isn't going to appeal to kids very much - we suggest replacing him with 2 cuddly robots one which can't speak but just whistles in a kiddie-appealing kinda way and the other is humanoid. And instead of finding the ulitimate answer they shall go out and destroy the evil empire. We will need to throw some romance (HHGG is sadly lacking in this) for this we propose that our heroes rescue some princess played by say Carrie Fisher.

I could go on but I don't want to reveal to much of the plot - but as you can see I think the result would be a great improvement ...

I have devised a simple experiment to determine if large G Forces present any kind of health risk. Simply jump from the top storey of a large building on to hard ground. You will sustain a couple of hundred G's. Then wait a few weeks to determine if any minor ill effects took place. Any takers ?

ZeoSync are a perfectly genuine company albeit using some rather outdated technology. We at NeoSyck have moved on from using BinaryAccelerator technology to TernaryAccelerator&#153 neotechnology resulting in an improved 1000 to 1 compression ratio. Then by dint of multiple self catenation (similar to recursion as computer scientists would know it) we are able to arbitrarily compress any random data by any desired amount.

How can this be possible? Well rather than using the Pigeonhole principle as do ZeoSync we base our technological process on the Eagle-blackhole principle. In layman's terms if 100 eagles fly into a black hole how many unique markers are required to label each one ? Well after short reflection any scientist realises that no markers are required as the eagles have been compressed out of existence.

Here lies the basis of our algorithms - we can compress any information infinitely. Now I hear you ask (as you are probably a somewhat sceptical /.er), how can we recover the original information ? Again, a moments scientific reflection provides the simple answer. As any layman knows all 100 eagles would simply reappear at an associated white hole, completely unscathed by their experience ! Thus using our patented Lightwave Technology&#153 we are able to compress and decompress at will

Ah, but you are still sceptical... No problem ! I've provided a complete scientifically rigorous proof of our process together with all our source code and binaries for all known operating systems. Simply decompress this " 1 " data.

  11. Re:Transparent aluminum on Transparent Concrete · · Score: 1

Contrary to some comments made about aluminum it is actual fact transparent ! Unfortunately aluminum is largely transparent only to X-rays (and higher energy E.M. radiation). It is not transparent to visible light for the reasons pointed out by other /.ers - i.e. it's a metal & etc. As a small aside, the crystalline structure of a material can and does affect transparency. For example rutile (titanium dioxide) in massive crystalline form is transparent. When crushed to a fine powder and suspended in an appropriate liquid it becomes quite opaque (white paint). On the other hand the PET (Polyethylene Terephthalate) much used to make plastic drinking bottles is usually of low crystallinity otherwise it appears unappealingly translucent or opaque (ie. the consumer cannot see the contents). In both cases the presence of large numbers of small crystals causes the loss of transparency.

It is possible despite the many (uninformed) negative comments that have appeared concerning this truly amazing breakthrough in compression technology. I, myself, using my own patented compression technology - The Shannon-Transmogrificator (TM) have managed to compress the entire Reuters article to a mere 4 ASCII characters (!), with essentially no loss in meaning: 'C', 'R', 'A', 'P'. I wonder if anyone can improve on this ?
