Astronomy is an unusual domain in that professional researchers participate in and support amateur clubs, and are often glad to collaborate. It's practical and a there's a long tradition too. After all, Gallileo took some time at home to build his own telescope, make some observations and take very good notes!
How about this? We herd a couple of asteroids
in closer to Earth and keep 'em handy as ammo, to knock away any that threaten. Setting this up would give us some real experience in moving these things.
Most of the amateur astronomers I know are married and/or have kids. (Though if the kids are grown so much the better and if you're retired and have lots of time and some $$ so much the better still). We just want to find some habitable planets to send those kids off to! --- There's no such thing as free love.
