Jesus, Dr. King, and Gandhi all died by violence. Many problems can in fact be solved by non-violence. The violence of other nation-states (or some non-state actors) is not in that set.
Actually, Gandhi supported WWI because a just government may need to resort to war to protect it's citizens and freedom. (From his autobiog which I highly recommend). But to go to war without exhausting diplomatic solutions would be against his principles I think. And having a job and using your talents to make weapons even more lethal would too.
Dark blue should never be used for anything somebody is expected to read. Short wavelength colors tend to focus just in front of the retina, and will thus always be a little bit blurry.
Holy cow! I've been using xterm for 10 years with dark blue font on white. Is this why I'm helpless, at work or anywhere, without my reading glasses? Maybe I can use red for 10 years and compensate...
Sounds like the commission looked at how to revamp NASA, without clearly defining what's it's new role would be. Would it focus solely on manned space flight? Then what about unmanned missions like the Mars Rovers? When those programs do succeed, they yield huge returns, both in public interest and scientific knowledge. Also, what would happen if we did try to go back to the Moon and lost a crew? (The Apollo program was very lucky and had glitches of some sort in every mission). I dont think NASA should put all of it's eggs into manned space exploration -- much as I'd like to see it return!
I thought phone and DSL were already split in most places. The article says SBC will loose all of it's broadband business but I don't see how -- can't they still offer a discount if you get phone plus DSL? One less bill to worry about each month -- works for me!
And I see lots of other problems trying to develop web apps for IE. I have a scientific app that allows download of large amounts of data to Excel and that just fails mysteriously under IE (various versions). It's very hard to configure helper apps correctly, and printing rarely comes close to what is displayed in the browser -- if it works at all!
Firefox is great on my Sun workstation, which I post to Slash...I mean...work on all day. I just want a browser and not a composer, mail client,...
Isn't this what QA groups are for? Does Microsoft have a QA group at all?
It's funny, there's a banner ad that Windows Server 2003 outperforms Linux as I post this -- how about uptime and stability?
And even if medicines were to suddenly cost zero, that does not mean healthcare in developing countries would be magically "cured". You also need basic infrastructure (transporation, clean water, clinics) and trained and paid staff, to even begin to make a dent.
Of course many do, but the Rochester Museum and Science Center has some of the best hands-on exibits I've seen -- not just a token few but a whole couple a halls. I think you have to simplify to plant ideas in minds that are unable to grasp abstract concepts yet. Like dharma seeds I guess!
The early Connery films are classics now -- they're on AMC! And I love the scene in Goldfinger where Bond wakes up on the plane. A beautiful woman is pointing a gun at him and so he asks her name. "Pussy Galore" she replies. Bond pauses, still coming to he says, "I must be dreaming..."

I'll be glad to name one of the moons after you now! Just send me $75 and I will put the name of you or a loved one in a nice book and file it in a bank vault. Call now and you can get 2 moons for $150!
Yep, I did 2 years in Zaire and I can see that. But the teachers I worked with were all men and they were very aware of what went on in the world - mainly via shortwave radio.
I think this is very worthwhile but would only work in cities where you have electricity - for part of the day at least...
And the distributer will claim it costs them 98.9 cents per song, so the writer and artists get to split the remaining fraction of a cent... --- Count your blessing.

Will we ever establish and sustain a colony off of the Earth? If so, where, when and how do you think we'll make it?
I dont think that matters so much so long as it's the same time, though it will be highest around the local noon. The exact time of local noon changes a bit from day to day as the earth is going a little faster when it's closer to the sun. That's why you get the figure 8 pattern - otherwise it would be a straight line up and down.

Good for you. There is nothing as beautiful as a psilocybin trip once in a while.
Yes, but you, 3,4-methylenedioxyme, should watch out for Ecstasy-induced toxicity in rat liver

Unless you have $$$$. Look at Trump -- who would even touch someone with a hairdo like that...
Oh great, now on top of light pollution, astronomers will have to contend with blimp blind-spots. Could they let us keep the Hubble at least?

That's right it's the other command. And it comes back 10 minutes later with:
Are you sure? [Y/N]
