Yah, I liked HL2 - a lot. Purely for gameplay reasons. I also/really/ did not appreciate the drm. I bought the DVD version because I like having a hard copy, and on one disk so as to be easier to manage. I didn't think I'd have to actually leave that disk in my drive to play though, as no one else did. (They've fixed that btw, and isn't actually valves fault.) That software caused hl2 to not run on several machines, btw.
I don't particularly mind dialing in to authenticate, but I definately don't like it. Not every lan party has internet access, and I don't want this to become the "norm," but at the same time I have to cheer for valve in trying to drive their own distribution model instead of the usual having another company package the software and install whatever-copyprotection-they-feel-like.
That is actually not true. Did you take time to listen to the loudspeaker at the cities you came in? That guy's arguments and logic was entertaining, and definately a plot developer. The storyline details are there, but you chose to ignore them.
The problem is that even with notifications if it isnt done automatically, it won't get done by some people...
I'm mostly thinking about my grandmother. But yah, she would be so intimidated by typing anything that the only way it would happen is me sshing into the box and doing it myself!
but yah - ubuntuu seems to have a nice setup - I'll have to check it out
Isn't the problem that water is actually corosive? so, pure water or not I would think it would eventually break the material down and create a circuit...
um - isn't oil lighter than water? so for a typical bucket setup that water will go to the bottom, and could well build up to get to the motherboard, displacing the oil
Just a thought. btw: oil bathing hd's is a pain, seals tend to leak after a few weeks/months...
I've always had one thought come to mind when someone mentions things like this... 1) how do we see these particles to know they are even there 2) what makes us think these tools can track that sub atomic particle if it got hit by some other sub atomic particle at insane speeds and was displaced?
rather - what if all they are "seeing" is a slide show. Think strobe light in the dark...
well - the only thing you said that I have an issue with is sports cars... Yes, they are unneccessary, but you're wrong on every other count 1) handling is important, so they have structural rigidity that is helpful in accidents - my 88 prelude was a lot safer when it wrecked than say, a cavalir
2) crosswinds are not important to a sports car/because/ of that low center of gravity, not to mention aerodynamics... There's also the tendancy for higher grip tires.
Also you're totaly missing the point. You might use the suv properly, you might drive it safely, you could be the best driver in the/world/ Simply put, most people don't, don't, and aren't.
Besides, insurance rates are adjusting - as in if you have a safe record, your rates are substantially lower. And not every small car is a death trap, or unsafe, but it is totaly unfair and unreasonable to compare a honda civic to an suv when the bumper on that suv goes well above the bumper of that civic - which cannot place its bumper any higher.
This isn't an suv on budget car we're talking about. At least if you drove a crown vic I'd stand a chance of/using/ my bumper. (I drive a Mazda3 now btw)
Well, I was origionally writing a post detailing adding weight to the rear as a sollution. Then it dawned on me. Front wheel drive cars have a tendancy to understeer, not oversteer. Rear wheel grip is a non issue because they do nothing but roll, while the front must turn approximately 80% of the weight as well as apply forward force and resistance.
The CRX is also a front wheel drive car with an obscenely high skidpad rating. So you're right. If a FWD car has a tendancy for the rear end to slide, the engineer/driver is to blame.
It's worth mentioning that had this person had such a system, you probably wouldn't have been in that situation at all.
None the less I believe speed limits are guidelines... If you ever don't want to brake - go the speedlimit or lower. You will almost never come up to someone slower than yourself and everyone will have to pass you or go at your pace. Generally this is a bad situation, but Semis and SUV's cannot stop at sports car speeds, so going slower may well be required to drive safely. The problem is a human one and I would much perfer a human solution (better than tickets) than a technological one.
Of course, my system of driving involves outside lanes progressively going faster - but not outside of the limits of easy adjustment.
This facilitates passing and allows traffic whom will be on the freeway the longest to travel faster. This is not the system enforced by our Arizona State Highway Patrol it seems...
I used to work at Arby's as a Shift Manager... It's not the employee's fault. People print custom coupons on laser printers and cut them out to give to schools and soforth.
This normally wouldn't be a problem, but no one would tell the employees. Weither it be intentional ignorance (the loss for those who do it is worth the extra business) or unintentional ignorance through lack of communication and tracking.
There are other issues, like social engineering. Which for 7$ a hour I personally did not care about.
You bought these items, totals for exactly 20$ - you say my manager is a male mexican and she's black? Hell I don't care. Here you go and get out of my face. If I have a line of 6 cars it is not worth the frustration of getting yelled at because someone is being stubborn about fraud intentionally for a company that I have no invested interist in.
If you really want to get into athistic reasons for not killing people, because they do the things you don't but need. Think everyone wants to be a garbageman?
Murder as a general rule of thumb is bad for society. That's generally reason enough. Even if that's some worthless person you just killed, you likely made someone sad. There is a huge difference between Atheism and Anarchy.
It's also kind of an unspoken agreement so you are more likely to survive when you piss me off by calling me "one of them." Why shouldn't I kill you?
FYI, I am an atheist. I also said/guideline/
I believe that religion is a farce to benefit society by intent. I do not follow it fully because I believe it to be untrue and abused. I am also willing to admit that this is an optomistic belief and nothing more.
Yes, you're a troll. But here's some troll snacks. I have tons of MP3's on my computer.
You know why I don't care? They are the only reason I buy _any_ Cd's. The company that makes them hikes up prices in monopolistic methods. They are from one of the few industries that actually sues it's customers frequently. They try to discourage people from pirating their music by negative reinforcement (Law suits, Annoying DRM, Root kits, Propaganda, spring to mind) No, I do not actively get them. They were put on my server by friends, of which I built to host things like CD images (of games we owned, but didn't want to ruin through active use mind you) to stream/link off of for authentication/re installation purposes. Yes, I am OK with that. As well as the fact that I am also guilty because I know/allow/encourage these acts to happen.
Believe it or not - this illegal act is actually part of capitalism in action. An industry not providing the service it's customers want will not be able to sell those services, However the demand still exists and thus customers will get them from somewhere. Think Prohibition.
I also cite the Anime industry. Yes I download lots of unlicensed Anime. No I do not delete them when they are. (I will never be able to get them again, and they usually have higher quality translations to make the lower quality worth dealing with) Yes I buy Anime, quite a bit actually. The Anime industry knows I download them, but they give incentives to their customers to buy their goods like box sets, free t-shirts, toys, posters. Positive reinforcement is a good thing. As a result, the industry is flourishing. So really I don't care about the record industry because they want to have their cake and eat it too.
On that note: Laws, ethical or not, create "criminals" - and the term should be given as much weight as the offense warrants. I could say that breathing is illegal and every one of us would be a Criminal. No, it would not be wrong to breath.
In the holocaust, some Nazi's saved Jewish people. Yes that made them criminals. No they are not ethically wrong. Some Nazi's killed Jewish people. No that did not make them criminals. No, they are not _necessarily_ ethically wrong either. To avoid going further off topic I'm going to close that statement by saying I do not think that doing something wrong because of an immediate threat to you or your family is exactly your fault. More like whomever created that situation. (Yes, this can be shared, yes you can be more wrong/right than someone else)
Really, would you follow every single rule/law from organizations that will happily sneak them into other, unrelated bills if they think/know the public objects to them? If they violate the understood intent of scope with which those rules/laws control/influence?
I'd say follow your conscience, but that is a blanket term. Not everyone has one, and not everyones' is the same.
As one of my previous posts indicate, I am aware that ethics is also a blanket term. No I am not going to clarify it. I do not think I have the philosophical background nor the time to come up with an acceptable answer for something so undefinable.
the 10 commandments is a good start for guidelines... I'm going to admit that you have a point, that the term ethics is really a blanket term, vague at best. Furthermore, I am not going to clarify them, because I know full well you know what ethics means, to you.
However the OP has a very good point that should recieve more credit than the post above his - Laws are not always ethical and one should use best judgement instead of doing everything "by the book."

The ten statements
1. "I am the Lord your God who brought you out of the land of Egypt..." - This commandment is to believe in the existence of God.
2. "You shall have no other gods besides Me...Do not make a sculpted image or any likeness of what is in the heavens above..."
3. "You shalt not swear falsely by the name of the Lord..." - This commandment is to never take the name of God in a vain oath. In Exodus, the text reads "in a vain oath" ( ' ), while in Deuteronomy it reads "in a false oath" ( ' ).
4. "Remember the Sabbath day and keep it holy" (the version in Deuteronomy mentions "Keep" rather than "Remember")
5. "Honor your father and your mother..." - This commandment is a development when compared to other laws of the Ancient East (for example, the Code of Hammurabi) that do not call for equal respect of the father and the mother.
6. "You shall not murder" - The Hebrew Bible makes a distinction between murdering and killing (see Jewish interpretation below).
7. "You shall not commit adultery"
8. "You shall not steal" (sometimes interpreted as kidnapping, since there are other injunctions against stealing property in the Bible).
9. "You shall not bear false witness against your neighbor"
10. "You shall not covet your neighbor's house..." (in Exodus, the text reads "... neighbor's house,... neighbor's wife, nor his manservant..." etc. while in Deuteronomy, "thy neighbor's wife,... thy neighbor's house, his field" etc.)

I'm not saying it can't be done, and that it would be good, I just think certain individuals would perfer it otherwise compared to complicating or devaluing the current business model
And just why shouldn't we allow for both? Why not have support for both open sourced and closed source drivers?
"The solution for vendors not wanting to support multiple kernels is to open source their drivers." Well they haven't, and likely will not for some time.
Your own example of the alsa drivers basically just concluded that hacked drivers are better, even without source. These drivers will still continue to be hacked together, we just might get the opportunity to use the equipment in the mean time!
Isn't one of the ideologies of open source having choices?
I keep thinking that there are pros and cons to basically everything, and if you want something you usually have to give something else up, or reach some sort of a middle ground.
Do you want linux to be accepted as a mainstream desktop environment or not? These are the kinds of choices that are to be made.
Currently many manufacturors leave it to the open source community to come up with drivers for their products. This leads to slower response times and drivers usually do not get accepted into the kernel until they reach a certain level. (understandably) Yes, if these drivers are broken, the sourcecode is provided and people can fix it. This is generally good... No, I cannot do this myself, so I end up with a broken system until it's fixed anyways.
Yes, I can probably download these updated drivers myself instead of waiting for the kernel to carry an updated version. No, I do not want to spend the extra time compiling my kernel, and if I used a packaged distro based one, I never would need to in the first place.
Yes, all manufacturors could do what nvidia did, and make a fairly decent program to install their driver No, they don't and apparently are not willing to. - or they make the.o files, but only for specific versions of the kernel that are frequently outdated and distro specific.
I'm sorry, but I do not see a problem with making it easier to do stuff. Having an API does not neccessarily mean there will be bad drivers any more than it currently does. Having an API does not mean that those same drivers could not have source files associated with them.
Having an API does mean that there will be a universal interface with the kernel, presumably not so dependant on the actual version of said kernel. Having an API does mean that it can be easier to upgrade drivers.
Yes, you're making it easier to provide broken and unfixable drivers, however they will exist where none existed before - this is not a bad thing. Anyone technically advanced enough to compile a kernel for their drivers and actively seek them out should also be advanced enough to determine where the system instability lies. You're basically shutting out an entire group because of a reason that hardly even affects you.
It is not like these drivers can't be written from scratch if they are broken... That kind of thing already happens anyways. It's almost like you are arguing that things should continue to be difficult so that those who aren't at a certain technical level will not bother you when they/do/ have problems, and that's not even on topic.
A stronger argument for your position might involve having to re-do basically every driver currently in the kernel. Change always has a cost and resistance associated with it, take the USA and metric measurements for example.
I really fail to see how your example is any different than the situation as it is now.
Except.. with how things are now, the average joe sixpack never gets a chance, and in your scenario he does, but might encounter the same ammount of problems he would in windows.
In the spirit of choice, why not support both and have open source drivers that work with the driver API? I see no reason why we can't have our open source drivers with our OEM drivers... Perhaps I'm being ignorant.
In other words "oh noes! they figured it out! - We'll try again later when there's less attention on it"
Think about the bills that the US gov't passes that get sent through with other bills. If it gets voted out, they just resubmit it with other things...
All weights besides the Monster Miata were pulled from cars.com so you can check me =) My accuracy is of course dependant on theirs.
And the 150lbs extra weight on the monster comes from the v8miata site, but I couldn't pull the weight of a '94 from cars.com so I was left guessing there. The cars have progressively gotten heavier over the years, so you might have gotten the weight of an older model.
With a few suspension mods for the Miata you can get ~1.0g on the skid pad relatively easy. Of course, the 'Vette is tunable as well, but if you apply the same ammount of rubber to the road, less weight can only be beneficial for cornering...
I'm a huge fan of both cars, and I love the idea of a MazdaSpeed Miata (I'd take the new '06 for the tilt steering wheel and 170HP N/A engine personally) but a Miata has nothing on a 'Vette... Your tuned Miata just passed a stock S2000!
It's also worth mentioning Doctor Memory that your 'Vette statistics are not brake HP, but since it's stock and the Miata isn't, it is fair to assume these are made up for in tuning for ease and I will continue that trend. Also your HP number and model are incorrect, the Z06 has 505HP. Your power to weight is correct however.
S2000: 240 HP 162 lb-ft 2835 lb
Power/weight: 11.81 lb/hp
Turbo Miata: (based off '05 MS MX-5) 260 BHP (est) 210 lb-ft (est) 2529 lb
Power/weight: 9.73 lb/hp
Z06 Corvette: ('06) 505 HP 470 lb-ft 3130 lb
Power/weight: 6.20 lb/hp
('05 MS Miata, 05 S2000, and 06 Z06 Vette numbers referenced from cars.com when possible)
You're actually very far from your goal of competing with a stock Z06. The Monster Miata (www.v8miata.com) is probably the best way to compete on that level... so take a '94 Miata, $17,000 for upgrades, (you'll need a better than stock mustang tranny) and 400hp should be within your reach.
Monster Miata: (based off '94 MX-5)
400 BHP (est) unknown lb-ft 2650 lb (estimated from 2500 + 150lbs for engine weight)
Power/weight: 6.63 lb/hp
That's substantially closer to your goal...
In any case this is off topic, and I expect nothing less than being modded as such, but what the heck.
It should be known that I don't actually believe in law or other such absolutes. However, my philosophy on using morals to guide ones actions is every bit as disputable - mostly in that they are both idealistic and thus flawed. This however is not within the scope of our subject =)
I recognise your point, however I feel that this incident is morally ok and thus support their actions, because the end justifies the means imo.

Anyone technically advanced enough to compile a kernel for their drivers and actively seek them out should also be advanced enough to determine where the system instability lies. You're basically shutting out an entire group because of a reason that hardly even affects you.
It is not like these drivers can't be written from scratch if they are broken
A stronger argument for your position might involve having to re-do basically every driver currently in the kernel. Change always has a cost and resistance associated with it, take the USA and metric measurements for example.
I really fail to see how your example is any different than the situation as it is now.
.. with how things are now, the average joe sixpack never gets a chance, and in your scenario he does, but might encounter the same ammount of problems he would in windows.
Except
In the spirit of choice, why not support both and have open source drivers that work with the driver API? I see no reason why we can't have our open source drivers with our OEM drivers... Perhaps I'm being ignorant.
In other words "oh noes! they figured it out! - We'll try again later when there's less attention on it"
...
Think about the bills that the US gov't passes that get sent through with other bills. If it gets voted out, they just resubmit it with other things
I have no faith in my country anymore.
Of course, the 'Vette is tunable as well, but if you apply the same ammount of rubber to the road, less weight can only be beneficial for cornering ...
... Your tuned Miata just passed a stock S2000!
... so take a '94 Miata, $17,000 for upgrades, (you'll need a better than stock mustang tranny) and 400hp should be within your reach.
I'm a huge fan of both cars, and I love the idea of a MazdaSpeed Miata (I'd take the new '06 for the tilt steering wheel and 170HP N/A engine personally) but a Miata has nothing on a 'Vette
S2000:
240 HP
162 lb-ft
2835 lb
Power/weight: 11.81 lb/hp
Turbo Miata: (based off '05 MS MX-5)
260 BHP (est)
210 lb-ft (est)
2529 lb
Power/weight: 9.73 lb/hp
Z06 Corvette: ('06)
505 HP
470 lb-ft
3130 lb
Power/weight: 6.20 lb/hp
('05 MS Miata, 05 S2000, and 06 Z06 Vette numbers referenced from cars.com when possible)
To review:
11.81 lb/hp +2.08 S2000 '05
9.73 lb/hp Turbo Miata '05
6.20 lb/hp -3.53 Z06 Corvette '06
You're actually very far from your goal of competing with a stock Z06. The Monster Miata (www.v8miata.com) is probably the best way to compete on that level
Monster Miata: (based off '94 MX-5)
400 BHP (est)
unknown lb-ft
2650 lb (estimated from 2500 + 150lbs for engine weight)
Power/weight: 6.63 lb/hp
That's substantially closer to your goal...
In any case this is off topic, and I expect nothing less than being modded as such, but what the heck.
This is the first time I've ever posted for an editorial related reason, but when I read this, it just stood out ...
Did that scientist tell you about all the bad naturally occuring substances as well? Like ... I don't know, poison ...
