Well, since we have to take "God" out of the Pledge, we aughtta replace it with something that makes sense, and doesn't offend the fragile sensibilities of athiests.
There was a time not too long ago when Microsoft barely recognized the existence of Linux.
Now they are actively trying to steer customers away from Linux.
To me, that speaks volumes!
OK maybe I'm just stupid...

I don't know about you guys, but I thought that at ~$140, the Radeon 9800 scored pretty well for such a reasonably priced card.
That was the first non-NVIDIA card I've bought since '99, and believe me it's worth every penny. No need to spend $400 on the PRO models or the latest NVIDIA offering. Ya can't beat the price/performance of the 9800, IMHO!
After a failed venture in high school, I find myself trying to plow through this series once again. Does it ever end? I mean it's a truly remarkable story, but it HAS to end somewhere, right??
"The papers show some of the exciting and esoteric applications that the industrial world finds for embedded Linum."
Aside from the problem I have with the word "Linum", do these papers show any of the less-than-successful open source deployments/projects?
Call my cynical, but I'm going to take any report about the success of OSS from an organization whose goal is to "promote the adoption of Open Source software" with a grain of objectivity salt.
Ahh yes, because one is sure to get 100% objective, truthful accounts from people who were victims of Ellison's ambition and have a genuine interest in seeing that he is portrayed in as negative a light possible.
Perhaps I'm being cynical, but I don't hold out much hope for truth in a one-sided publication.
I think the parent post brings up a great point about irrational decisions the UN has made in the past, but it was given a negative moderation (not to mention one that cannot be metamoderated) because the moderator found something offensive about the truth.
Tivo doesn't give you a second of your life "back"; all it does is allow you to shuffle television around your life, instead of your life around television. Who is in control of when you watch television doesn't change the fact that the television is still the one in control.
"You no longer have to be there when the show is on, or do the constant shuffling of tapes and schedules on a VCR."
You don't need a Tivo for that; try turning the fucking thing off. It's cheaper than Tivo too!
"The truth of the matter is that pirated copies of Windows and Office are one of Bill Gates' best marketing tools."
And that's certainly true; otherwise we'd have seen RIAA-style crackdown tactics long ago.
Wasn't disagreeing with you on that point, just the pretentious little snot who would screw thousands of people out of their jobs if he could. While Microsoft (and their products) aren't perfect, neither the computer intustry nor the Internet would be what it is today without their contributions.
"But it's not morally okay to copy the software of companies whose livelihood depends on that software. Like small companies with unique software. It's a different story with Microsoft - I feel it's my moral obligation to screw them."
There's a name for that; it's called hypocrisy. Does this person really believe that Microsoft employees' livelihoods don't depend on their employment? What does he have against all of those people, as he's decided it's moral to screw all of them too!
Contrary to what a lot of people (and no small number of them are Slashdotters) think, Microsoft employees depend on their jobs as much as the employees of small companies.
"What, because her survey turned up some "low lifes" it suddenly can't be trusted and must be "taken with a grain of salt"? Where does this logic come from?"
I think the article submitter was likely talking about the Jews more so than about the hackers.

Fellas, be wary of strange women who offer you to plug into them. Chances are that you're not the first, and her tastes aren't discriminating!

"Why do I get the feeling that this would make a great Apple commercial? I could see them playing this out and it still fitting into the clean and slick Apple marketing image."
The only problem is that Apple marketing would probably see this as a breach of their TOS, and wouldn't want to encourage rampant music sharing between Apple customers.
Unfortunately, I have to work during the week so that I can pay my taxes. Some people are lucky enough to do exactly what you suggest for a living (columnists, radio talk show hosts), but most of us aren't that lucky.
That's why I post to Slashdot and write letters to newspapers. It's not much, but it's all I have time for.
Choosing not to eat at McDonald's doesn't require me to go to their corporate headquarters and ask them to change their french-fry recipe to something I would enjoy more. The "Get Involved" argument only goes so far, and the political "What Buys Me More Votes" argument usually goes much further.

*sigh...* Do we really need to go over the difference between copying and stealing again?

Stop right there... this is a FANTASY movie! Heroes in fantasy movies are allowed/supposed to be able to do things that you or I can't.
Did you also complain about Neo's super-human abilities in the Matrix series too?

Or for that matter, it could be that many things (in the book) may be patenly false. How are we to know?

No telco or cable company that I know of can imprison or confiscate the assets of anyone who didn't want to subscribe to their service.

That should read "Utah Taxpayers To Provide High-Speed Access".
