It's funny because it shows the hilarious lack of business savvy that permeates every corner of Slashdot. The honor system will never, ever, ever, ever, ever have any place in business. Ever. Anyone who says otherwise has never worked a real job, plain and simple. The ONLY reason why charities have ANY success is because they're willing to trot out Little Crippled Timmy in order to evoke guilt or empathy from would-be patrons. Unless tech companies wind up doing the same ("This is James. Look how fat he is from his hours of coding. Look at his doughy skin texture. Look!"), this methodology deserves no more consideration than a quick chuckle and a shaking of one's head.

I must admit, however, that I really wish I had the same skills in the area of self-delusion as those who actually champion a donation model as a means of gaining anything other than beer money (maybe). Why, I could finally explain why Shania Twain never responds to my letters -- she's afraid of her feelings for me!

I am trying to be as respectful to your honest treatise as I am able, but I can't help thinking, as I read what you wrote, that you're taking this all way too seriously. So, your comment seems to work pretty well in both directions; would you have written it to one of the cretins that use this same idiotic rationalization for abandoning Microsoft products seven years ago? Hmm...

Sigh. Look, take a hint boys and girls. The FAQ entry for Mac and Linux support makes it abundantly clear that Trillian developers have NO interest in supporting anything but Windows, and by badgering them, you'll just make it even less likely.

I don't understand why it's so difficult for the OSS community to just get the point -- some people don't want to play in your sandbox. Yet, invariably, I see the constant calls to hassle developers because of the choice they've made. Sure, some of them may not be aware that non-Windows users have an interest in their product, but I will bet dollars to doughnuts that the vast majority just choose not to. Is it so hard to accept that not everyone wishes to adopt or assist in your cause?

If I were a Trillian developer, and my inbox was suddenly filled with the typical bizarre sense of entitlement found here at Slashdot, even after I had posted an absolutely clear disinterest in supporting Mac or Linux in my FAQ, I guarantee that your grandchildren would be in their cold graves before I'd ever produce a non-Windows version.
