This is the GAO report that jrifkin mentioned. It's right there on page 131 like he said (report page 131, not pdf page 131).

    http://www.gao.gov/search?q=GAO-11-696

The thing to note is, most of the $16 trillion you say was "given" to the banks was really "loaned" to the banks. My point being a loan is better than straigt-up giving away the money, even if it is a risky loan that is clearly controversial.

By means of comparison... jrfikin mentioned that the government could have used that $16 trillion to give every man, woman, and child a $50,000. Again, since the money was lent, not given, that is also a bad idea.

DevLeopard and Davide Marney have made the comments I agree with most in this /. discussion -- do not rely on credit/leverage as it will only put you at risk for trouble. The government sets a bad example in this case but at least it has a reliable income, whereas an individual or corporation can lose their income over night as we have seen occur to our family, friends, businesses, and banks over the past decade.

The ship called the US (or Global) Economy is in danger of sinking, and instead of figuring out how to patch the hull or securing the life rafts, everybody is busy blaming the engineers for poor construction, questioning the navigator's abilities, and claiming the passengers are too fat. The more practical and rational approach is if we all banded together to get the ship sailing again, crew and passenger alike.

It would be silly to quit.

Laid-off = good chance of a receiving severance package, i.e. paid unemployment for 1-6 months, which you can combine with government unemployment

Quit = 24 hours of high emotion, followed by the realization you have no income

Also, if it were me, I would be pissed they laid me off, but I wouldn't want to sabotage the product I helped create over many years, regardless of who now owned it. Considering the previous owner, it could not have been much of a surprise in the first place.

First, yes, my post was not insightful, more like angry. But mods love me, so deal with it CodeBusta. Back on topic: How am I supposed to know that the aliens are not a major part of the main storyline? After hearing there are aliens in the game, I considered that maybe the humans didn't nuke each other but instead had to fight off an alien invasion? That is pivotal if you ask me. I don't know how aliens can't NOT be pivotal. A society isolated vs a society in contact with aliens is a large difference. Obviously its not a new idea for games as a whole, but within a setting so rich with story as Fallout, knowing there are aliens around is kinda a big deal in my book. I'll choose to ignore your off-beat "win the game" and Madden 2009 comments cuz they are too irrelevant. I'm talking about story and spoiling stories of a really good game. If you want to turn this into a console/hardcore discussion, you can move along. (For the record, I prefer PC games and have for the last 20 years)

Yea, people do this kind of thing all the time with ordinary businesses. Anything that can be traced back to income generation can more or less be claimed as a business expense to be written off, as long as you are also claiming that income. But the point someone made above still stands... if you are making enough to claim it on your taxes, then that's likely the least of your problems.

Does anyone have pictures of what the resulting scans look like? The only one I could find was on the tsa.gov website.

If that's what it really looks like, then I don't understand how there is any real controversy here. You'd have to be a desperate fella to get aroused by that. Any of these technologies, I assume, are going to be very abstract representations of the human body, hardly something comparable to an actual naked photo of you.

In the end, people will always be able to see you naked the old fashioned way: using their imagination. Get over your vanity, honestly.

Are there any images/video of this "continent sized" garbage patch? Not a single reference link from the Wikipedia page contained an actual photograph of this garbage patch. If this garbage patch is actually twice the size of the United States, surely someone has photographed it?
I'm beginning to think it's more of a headline, than a reality. I don't doubt there is an unacceptable level of garbage floating around out there, but it shouldn't be asking much to have some direct evidence of it. So far, it's only been proven indirectly through garbage washing up on shore and anecdotal evidence. That's all well and good, but that hardly proves a CONTINENT. It's that size comparison that bothers me the most.
