  1. Re:Use a shipping container on How To Build an Open Source House? · · Score: 1

Sure but dry wall has paper on both sides. To prevent frost/mildew/water building up you need something to insulate the drywall from the elements. Otherwise the paper will rot and you you'll start to get mold etc. Which will not be good.

  3. Windows... on In Which OS Do You Feel More Productive? · · Score: 1

So far I've only worked with DOS, Windows 3.1 and up, Mac OS X (I won't include the play time on earlier macs.) and a flavour or two of Linux. What allows me to be move productive is the ability to move around the OS with just the keyboard. I code and having to move a hand from the keyboard to the mouse breaks the momentum. I find windows the most complete with regards to keyboard navigation. There are only a few things that is won't do well. Mac OSX is a little clunky in this respect; like getting to the menu and navigating to a menu item. Linux (Gnome, KDE) has some of the basics but I find I can't do some cirital thinks without using the mouse. Computer config also helps though so my opinion is a bit unfair. My windows box is dual headed. Which is great to have for graphics and development work. My mac is just a laptop with limited resolution plus a frustrating keyboard. My inexperience with Mac also a cause of annoyance for me being a major PC user. PC's have shift, control and alt as their modifier keys. Macs have shift, control, option and splat keys; include 'fn' key for laptops as well as you need it to get to the pgdn, pgup, home and end buttons. I'm always getting the common keyboard combos wrong as I'm used to using control mainly instead splat and splat is where alt is on the pc. Plus behaviour differences don't help... Hrm... This is turning into a gripe. :P I think most will end up saying the OS they used the most as they know it the best. Having to move to a new system will require a brain washing to unlearn all the habits.

    It might work.

Personally, it's the dumbest thing I've heard. Doable sure but who would want to code in it when there are many other languages out there that are nicer to code in (Not just C).

    Lead balloon I think.

  6. Quality... on Andromeda And Mutant X Cancelled · · Score: 1

I don't know about MutantX. I just couldn't get into that show. Not enough likeable characters or something.

Andromeda started out ok... It arced up having a decent storyline... And then suddenly the wheels fell off.

To me it just seems like the boys running the show have no clear direction where it should go and it shows in the writing. Not to mention some god awful episodes of late with b-movie quality editing, acting and effects. I'm not entirely surprised that they are cancelling the show. Maybe they'll make a miniseries or two to wrap it up instead of a season... I'll miss Rommy. :/

  7. Does DLP also have a delay issue? on Lip Sync Problems with New Digital Displays? · · Score: 1

Does DLP also have the same/similar delay issue as plasma and LCD? I know the lip syncing can be very annoying. I have a home theater using ATI stuff and their time delay features for the TV program display a similar lip sync problem. Usually in the reverse though, frames are well ahead of the sound. It basically makes the time shifting of the program useless. It's very difficult to watch TV when the two aren't in sync. I'm wondering if other TV software also have this problem? Does TIVO and other devices like that have the problem?

  8. Reason for a HTPC instead of separat HT system on What's the Point of Building a Home Theater PC? · · Score: 1

I'm probably not unique here but the main reason for me to have a HTPC is because I have such a small appartment that I don't have room for a PC and HT system. The PC sits in the living room and acts as a answering machine, DVD player, TV, etc. However I will say that I am not too impressed with the HTPC that I built. DVD playback isn't optimum, if it has trouble it can sometimes take for ages to get past a trouble spot on the disc. TimeShifting isn't all that great, voice and video are never in sync. TV is ok. PVR is not as easy to set up recordings, you'd think being a computer with so much freedom of interface that they would be able to do it right. Asus P5 MB ATI AIW 8500DV ATI remote (ok but doesn't work with all programs.) SB Audigy with digital link to Digital Speakers Sony DVD Rom Sony 21" Monitor (Enough for my small apartment) Software: ATI DVD player (Has problems dealing with trouble spots on DVDs.) ATI TV (time shifting isn't top notch.) ATI's CD player I have issues with so I end up using winamp 2. I have issues with winamp 3. I use the computer for development and art so it is used as a computer as well.

  9. iPodService.exe on iTunes Disables MusicMatch · · Score: 1

I unfortunately updated 'Quicktime' and downloaded the iTunes for windows as well. Now I notice in my processes a iPosService.exe is running and can't get it to terminate. I don't even own an iPod so this process is just taking up memory.

I copied my Music tunes directory from my Mac to my PC and tried to see if the iTunes would recognize the library. Even after setting the preferences for it to look somewhere else I still get a blank iTunes screen. Bah. I think I'll stick with WinAmp for now.

  10. Floppies. on Death to the 3.5" Floppy? · · Score: 1

I actually had need of a boot floppy set after my win2K box went belly up. I couldn't get it to boot from CD for some reason.

For whatever does replace the floppy the other question becomes, what file format will it use? I've seen some USB drives (pieces of crap or at least the one I bought) and they use FAT16! Certainly limits the media size. At least Floppies can be read on all computers without too much trouble. CD's come in a number of formats. I don't know off hand which format is compatible over all platforms (*nix, dos, windows, mac, osx, beos blah blah blah.)

  11. PC Power & Cooling Case on Improving Computer Form Factors? · · Score: 1

Sleekline are 1U high, can fit one or two HD's, a CD and a floppy. Most of there motherboards come with a video card and a sound card on board (which may not be the greatest.) Wouldn't these suffice?

Has anyone done a review of these cases/computers? Would they be good linux boxes? Expandability is seriously limited though. I don't think a you can put in a normal PCI card in them. I could be wrong.
