    I just did a quick search on Gnutella for DeCSS, and a few matches came back.

    Now that's a classic example of what P2P is good for - distributing "illicit" files.

    What was the reason behind not using standard CVS like other OSS projects?

    Is the kernel just too big for it?

    P.S. I don't have an opinion as to which oen they use - as long as the one they do use gets the job done, and is secure.

    European mirrors? Asia/Pac mirrors are even friendlier :)

    I first went to www.kernel.org (you did know they run RedHat and Debian mirrors?) but they were completely off line. Then I pulled the Google cache of their mirrors, and chose a couple that I figured no-one else would be using.

    Good on you, www.th.kernel.org and www.pk.kernel.org - I got 220kb/s until all 3 ISOs were safely on my site :)

    Course, they'll get completely trashed thanks to me mentioning it here.. ;)

    If we can educate newbies not to run as root, they shouldn't ever be able to actually mess with the running of their systems.

    Of course, they'll still be able to delete stuff in their home areas, but we all have to learn the hard way :)

    Of course, alias rm = 'mv "$1" /home/wastepapaerbasket' would produce the required result. And a crontab that find /home/wastepaperbasket -atime +7 -exec rm {} \; would auto clean the old ones for you.

    I can't wait for the day that Microsoft finally crack (no pun intended) the lockdown of Windows.
    People everywhere will be so pissed off, and will be reaching for the Linux CD's faster than you can say insmod ntfs.o.

    I think they know that though. Their current tactics are just to warn corporates to pay up. To be honest, I think Microsoft are resigned to home users running Windows for free, although they don't mind if they can get a few of the old timers to actually fork out.

    -- What's that? Another free operating system? is it like Linux? What's that? It is Linux? Oh, this is all too confusing for me. We're going to stick with Microsoft - they don't change their name every 5 mins...

    The media knows it as Linux.
    The heads of companies know it as Linux.
    To some people, GNU/Linux is only created by a company called RedHat who employs someone called Torvalds.

    Live with it.
    Be happy that's it's well known as Linux.

    If RH don't like this then why don't they just drop the one(s) they don't want people to use?

    Then we'd get the "Redhat is Microsoft" arguments, and people saying that they're reducing choice, stiffling competition, etc, etc.

    Why is MS or AOL powerful? Because they are simple, and have lots of users. We need to get more people using Linux.

    Is it really back to XORing our messages with random data known to both ends?
    That sucks.

    It is pretty useless that when only 5 minutes after a story has been posted, none of the readers can see what the story is about.

    Maybe a slashdot.txt file like robots.txt could be used to request that slashdot does/doesn't cache the site before submission.

    Well, if I had gotten to the site in time, I would have mirrored it. Ho hum.

    I tried to set up a wireless lan that only saw the public interface of a VPN box, and it worked fine.
    Then we had the need to hook iPaqs up to it, and it all fell down.
    Sure there are VPN clients for iPaqs (Movian), but have you ever tried running 3DES on one? It does it, but the bandwidth drops right down to about 200-300kb/s.
    Ho hum, back to WEP.

    Mind you, our wireless network isn't used much at all, and so I doubt anyone could have collected enough interesting packets, even if they had been running AirSnort from the word go.
    My advice? Run Airsnort, and each time it breaks your key, change the key, and let people know.

    For Gods sake, people, don't set Konq/Moz/Opera to say it's IE, or we'll never get a true picture. And, if a site doesn't let you in as your true self, don't go to the site, and send them an email telling them that you didn't.

    Has anyone reading this **ever** seen any MS source code for their OS's?

    There's one guy here (hello Dave) that counters my open-source arguments with, "Oh but you can now get the source-code to WinCE", but that doesn't hold water for me.
