Seriously. Hundreds of geeks have responded to this post by philosophizing and speculating. yet, it's a non-story. The guy got fired for something his employer deemed naughty and that's that. The guy isn't suing them. He's not waging a publicity campaign against them. End of story. So, why exactly is this here? Slow news day, I guess.
I have yet to have a good experience with one, or known anyone to have a good exp. with one. 99.9% don't know shit about the jobs they are hiring for! One recruiter kept asking me abou;t competitive analysis jobs - when I speficially told her I no longer wanted to do that. One got REALLY nasty with me when I turned down a job with Time Warner b/c they wouldn't be flexible with a wedding I needed to take time off to attend. Another didn't even know what HTML was when I was looking for a job in web dev. My g/f just got run through a bizarre mess with a recruiter who flat out lied to her about a company making a pending offer to her over the freakin' Labor Day wknd. Well, there was no offer and the jackass went on vacation the very next week leaving her hanging out wondering if she was getting this ficticious offer. I was talking w/ someone just this afternoon about these retards. None of them know what they're doing. They're either housewives or bitter women who pretend to want a job (see: real estate agents) or are idiots fresh out of college who only see a commission check.
Too bad the shit don't work right on all browsers.

I have over 150 filters on my mail server now, and I JUST started seeing real results. The fucked up thing is that who knows what legit mail is being lost due to the filters we're forced to use.
I hope all spammers' souls live an deternity in a horrible place. I have more admiration for pimps and bag ladies than I do these people.
So, my new script will be to forward this crap to every House member and Senator.
Yep. I noticed the exact same thing on my cable modem. I was like "WTF????" And at the same time couldn't get to at least 2 of the forum sites I visit very regularly. The shitty thing is, I _still_ can't get to those sites. I guess I could say leave it to M$ on this one, but if this is the same attack as last July, then shame on the admins for such sloppy-ass work.

Who in the world calls Netscape for support anymore? Who needs a dictionary for web browsing? Stable? Netscape and stability have neevr been synonymous. Bleeding edge features? LOL!! Bro, this fucker is so BEHIND the edge, you might as well refer to it as bleeding to death. You wonder why most people still use 4.7x? Because it's still better. But, IE has so far surpassed Netscape in just about every way (except the brilliant Usenet news reader NS has always had and remains my favorite) that it's a dead issue at this point.
This is just classic. Didn't CompuServe or Unisys try to pull something like this with GIF? I know there are several other examples of companies doing this as a last gasp.
Look, let's be honest. The ONLY reason this is happening is because CMGI can't make a dime anymore. They are a failed business. That's why all of their dot boms are closing down. Their stock has tanked. So, how do they make money? Sue everyone under the sun for using "thier" technology. Yeah. Good luck.
Yep. Both Michelle Yoh and the younger chick. Absolutely beautiful.
The movie was a visual masterpiece. The first fight scene alone was worth the price of admission. And it kep going. How they did it, I have no idea. Pure genious.
I downloaded it for my mac. Installation went smoothly. Then, the disappointment set it (as I expected). First of all, the damn thing does NOT recognize any of the old Netscape preferences, bookmarks, etc. So, lo and behold, you have to re-enter every damn setting AGAIn!!!! And, as most earlier versions have done, it crashed on me when I was trying to subscribe to newsgroups. BOOM! Buh-bye.
I'm used to NS 4.7. I think I'll stick with this and IE 5.5 for a while.
Well, if they had a clue, they'd have a backup to restore the site. We take a "snapshot" every day and can restore our (large) site in minutes. And it's a hell of lot bigger than the fucking Yankees site....
If Steinbrenner is paying the bill, fine. If we are, fuck it.
Yeah, like he has the time to actually sit down for a couple of hours and do this. C'mon, folks. The guy is busy as hell campainging his butt off. He's either speaking or hitching a ride to the next town. Give the guy a break. At least you KNOW where he stands. What difference would it have made if it were more "personal?" WOuldn't have made one bit of difference b/c the answers would be the same!!! DUH!
What the fuck? A baseball team's WEB SITE is defaced, and my goddamn tax dollars are paying for a massive investigation to pay for it??????? You have to be kidding me!!! It's a web site, people! For a sports team! It's not the White House, for Christ's sake.
Thanks, Men in Black, for eating up my taxes.
Damn right. If you take into account the dolts who control the major parties, I happily give my vote someone who actually maintains some integrity. Yeah, he may seems nuts sometimes, but the guy has done more for this country than either candidate ever has or will. And the fact that he refuses PAC/soft money, is a plus. It's sickening how every politician in Washington is a whore to special interests. It's time we take back our government. I wholeheartedly support the Green Party in its attempts to establish a credible third party that will, at least, keep the duopoly scared and always on its toes.
I hope everyone votes for Nader. He's the only sane one running for office today.
You're right. I am an ardent Nader supporter and can't stand the fact that in this supposed democracy, he is being shut out. Hopefully, this is a begninning of a major shakeup. It's disgusting.
Anyway, I agree with you. Even though I don't find much appealing about Buchanan, Browne, etc., they have EVERY RIGHT to be in the debates in order to voice their parties' platforms. WE are the ones who decides who gets the votes. LET THEM DEBATE!!
I'm not saying you would be an idiot by working for a startup. What I am saying is that the honeymoon is over for startups. LOTS of people got rich on a number of great, and absolutely STUPID ideas. But, as everyone predicted, it has all come crashing down. Dumb ideas now stick out like sore thumbs, whereas they got $20M a couple of years ago. I absoutely agree with you that taking such a risk is what it's about....IF you can afford it. In my case, I cannot. I have school loans to pay every month, car payment, rent and food.
The chances of becoming wealthy on a hot IPO is wayyyyy smaller than it was a year or two ago. Look at most companies that have gone public this year and you see the sad reality.
Avoid.coms at all costs. I am presently searching for a job in Silicon Valley, and there is no way in hell I will be joining any startups. 99% of these companies are obviously in it for the hot IPO. Look at HotJobs.com, for instance. Half the search results say "Hot Pre-IPO Startup!" Guess what? I don't even bother reading those listings. I know if I actually got one of those jobs, the likelihood of me searching for a new job in the next six months is pretty good at this point.
Another thing is, I work at a company that has made a transition from publishing two magazines to launching a major web site. We just received $10 million. And you know what? I now hate the job I used to love. No longer is it the relaxed, flexible, non-corporate entity it was a year ago. Now, we have hired suits as CTO and CFO, and it sucks. Good bye 3+ week vacations, hello 2-weeks. Good bye flex hours. Hello micro-management of how long everyone works.
Is this all worht it? Not really? I'm not sticking around for another 3 years for stock options that may be worthless. Hell, the new suits got all the shares anyway. How much will I get?
Moral of the story? Stick with the established companies that you know will be around in 5 years.
The only thing I disagree with John about is that he calls these people neo-luddites. Granted, most of them (notably the politicians) aren't even tha, as they are spineless cowards hopping on an easy bandwagon instead of fighting real targets. But the other "radical" luddites today are needed, folks. Why? Because they are the few that can actually give us a real perspective on what's going on. Jesus, just look at how technology has absolutely enveloped our lives since 1994!! It's amazing. But are we ebracing everything that comes down the pike without thinking of the long-term consequences? I think so. And these "neo" luddites are the few who can see through all this.
I think more people need to think twice about this subject. it shoudln't be taken lightly. It's changing the way we all live very quickly.
