    for the same reason that a bomb at the WTC would have never got this much coverage, especially if it hadnt have collapsed the towers. there is nothing special to show ppl on tv over and over and over and over again ... its all about ratings, and what ppl want to see on the teevee. ... and because it was such a long and extended 'attack' ... (two planes about 20 mins apart, and then the buildings paused for effect before collapsing, giving half the NY fire department time to fill the building) ... then we get to hear every man and his dog's "september 11 story" ... on the way to work this morning i saw that the normal morning show called 'today' - which has a cooking article each morning - was interviewing a NY chef for his "september 11 story", which went something like all the other ppl who werent either in the building, or knew someone in the building at the time : "well, i went to work, and heard an explosion, and then we saw some stuff on tv, i thought it was a bomb, then we saw the second plane"

    if you are nerdy enough to want the computer to have artificial intelligence sufficent to be able to play the game for you when you arent there, then you had better start hoping they implement artificial intelligence in girls sometime soon, cause no girl with 'real' intelligence is gonna wanna touch you ... hehehe

    ... and are they gonna implement a female version of the ai to play the games? some qualities required by this ai would be to

    - question the purpose of playing the game at all
    - suggest that instead of playing you do something 'romantic' instead of playing "boring computer games"
    - ask why you dont talk to the characters to see what issues they have that would make them so violent, instead of riddling them all with bullets.
    - complain about the breast/hip size of all the female characters in the game, and make snide comments about their skimpy attire

    (although i must admit i jiggled the boobs of the Aribeth model in the char viewer in NWN for ages hehehe)

    if that is how you think then you can quit whining about your "5 years at liberal schools" bullshit, you were merely getting a taste of your own medicine.

    this is probably the biggest irritation in the majority of current religions ... the inability to leave ppl to their own opinions on a subject, and simply have a discussion, and the brainwashed need to try and force their flawed worldview based on a single work of fiction onto ppl that have the misfortune to cross paths with them.

    and i say "current religions" because all religions thru out history have had finite life spans, and dont bother thinking that yours will be any different, the world will eventually be rid of it, i guess the biggest shame is that it tends to be replaced in favour of more bullshit religions.

    congratulations on being in the '95th percentile' ... i hope thats working out well for you, being smart and all. could i perhaps suggest that you spend a bit of time away from engineering to spend some time reading a few of the books that have looked into the 'history' of your religion and have pretty much showed it up to be the fake that it is. well, maybe fake is a bit strong, im sure there are elements of truth to it, more like 'not all that you believe it to be'. that fits a bit better.

    ill tell you what else is getting tired, people spouting their resumes upon hearing the 'mental midget' line, as if believing in bullshit is somehow justified because they are studying for longer than 3 years at uni/college.

    oh yeah, and fuck that 'gutless wonders afraid of conflict' stuff. bring it on. just in case you couldnt already tell :) (and dont get too excited. i dont really hate you or anything, i just like a good argument)

    and whats even more interesting than that, was that it sucked incredibly badly. its gotta be up there in the top 10 'worst designed games ever' and i dont care for anyones star wars fanboy 'JEDI OUTCAST ROCKS' shite, the game was POO, no matter which way you look at it. it broke just about every 'game design no-no's there is. but yes, it sold in bucket loads (probably) and got mega high review marks everywhere, just because its star wars ... its almost as bad as that 3D RTS star wars game from a year or two ago. hmmm, okay, well, even ill admit thats being a little harsh to JK2 ...

    i agree. i am a more an agnostic than anything else, i think religion is a load of garbage, but i have no problem with the bringing of a bible to class. just as long as you follow the idea that you are free to believe whatever you want, just dont expect anyone else to believe the same stuff.

    and i agree with the second point too, from my point of view, i would also be incredibly interested in reading and studying a book that has convinced millions of people to believe all sorts of crap and then to convince them that they need to try to convince others. its the worlds greatest control mechanism, and my hat goes off to its writers.

    ... but i agree that the lack of original games is frustrating, and the endless number of 'me too' style games out there are starting to get depressing ... it was always destined to happen once big business got a sniff of the money that could be made in the games industry. and the only way its gonna be turned back the other way is if enough people have the time, talent and desire to spend creating new and exciting worlds.

    ... you played gta3 for about an hour and got bored? i finished it on both my ps2 and pc, and if all goes well it should be the future style of games ... the creation of an entire world in which you have set goals to achieve, be they straight up missions, or something more subtle. kinda like morrowind, but even that has some 'world design' issues, the primary one being the fact that the day/night system is purely cosmetic ... oh yeah, and people probably need to stop pirating every game in sight and actually let your wallet show how much you appreciate innovation ...

    a lot of crap games like the sims, and the newest NFL/FIFA/F1 200x games tend to do so well in the charts because they are popular with the non-hardcore-ish type gamers who dont have access to the stuff needed to make copies of games, and who will go out and buy the 2-3 games that they think are worth their money, even if they are just re-hashes of last years money-spinners, or whatever that 'mutton dressed as lamb' cliche is, in the creative sense ...

    i agree totally, i dont even think many ppl got the 'Make CS-cheaters listen to Reason(tm)' joke from a few posts bank, which i thought was pretty funny, but maybe im just a nerd/loser :)

    anyway, neocron is an mmorpg which looks like it could fit the bill of a future 'metaverse' type environment, once it finally is released. they offer the chance to just sit around and do whatever you like. which i know is the same as some of the other online rpgs, but this one is in a fully 3d environment, with real-time interaction (and presumably sword fighting :)) ... but i think you can still abandon all your friends and social events, quit your job, and just spend all your time levelling up before killing yourself. there is an option under the tools -> preferences -> takeresponsibilityforyourownactions menu. or something. either way it has me excited.

    plus, it has a strip club. and its never referred to as the definate article. its always THE dildo, never ... YOUR dildo.

    (note to morons : the fact that i have now described myself as a nerd/loser means i wont actually start crying when you agree with me, so dont waste your time)

    wha? thats not even relevant to me because im not a linux zealot, im more of a windows (l)user ... but to hypothesise ... i would say 'yes, but you are mentioning problems that were prevalent in older version of the OS, but which are no longer an issue', a bit more articulate than "Fuck you." ... unfortunately you cant say this with windows because i can upgrade to the web browser and mail handler that comes with newer versions of windows anyway, even tho i have win98se. although possibly some of the integration issues i was mentioning have been solved. but i doubt it.

    are you serious? it uses less resources because it virtually starts up when windows does. its constantly running in the background, therefore it doesnt appear to take as much to run. its another part of the crap "integration" of all that bloat-ware that comes with windows. about the only advantage you get out of that is that when IE crashes, there is a good chance that it will take the OS with it, and its reboot time. but i forgot, we live in an age where we accept that our OS will need a reboot 3-4 times a day.

    this is the same problem with that awful piece of software, Windows Explorer. it is quite possibly the worst program i have ever used in my entire life, and it is responsible for more OS crashes on my win98se box than any other program. and its the fucking file viewer!!! and the best bit is, because it is integrated with the OS, when it dies, its virtually gaurenteed to take the OS with it. the amount of times i have deleted a large folder, which has taken a few seconds to delete, and then hang it and then my OS hang, is beyond ridiculous.

    oh yeah, and outlook express is terrible. the full outlook is actually quite good, but who wants to shell out big bucks when you can get a equivalent mail client with all the shit taken out with mozilla for nothing. now if only i could work out how to get my emails to default to fixed width when i type ...

    care to recommend an API? wasnt too sure from a quick peek at flipcode.com as to whether it was OpenGL or DirectX aligned ... what have you done most of your stuff in??? and have you had experience with both, and can offer any reasoning behind a preference??? (please excuse my ignorance, i havent had time to do a search for any of your articles to see if that answers my question, feel free to just ignore me and ill get off my butt and find them myself)

    cool, looks like i have enough stuff there to keep me going for a while ... thanks for all the links/ideas everybody, and for the blatant BlitzBasic spam hehehe (joke) ;) interesting that i dont think anyone made mention of the directX sdk etc etc ... although i guess i do have to remember that this is /. hehehe :)

    just to give the full pic for those who like to read a bio, i actually have a CS major which i finished 3 yrs ago, and i am two third year maths topics short of making it a CS/MATH double major (which i plan on going back and doing at some point in time), and a fair bit of C++ experience (i wrote my own text based blackjack program at uni on the unix machines, and then 'ported' it to DOS) and tinkered with it at a graphical level in DOS (good old Black Arts of 3D Game Programming book), but had a major issue with some sort of pointer array which ended up with me putting a stop to the whole thing ... and i have been a VB programmer professionally (i dont think those words go together but whatever) for the past 2 yrs or so, and VB tends to let you be a very lazy programmer, and MDI form accounting software is just ridiculously easy to the point of tedium, so before i go senile from VB infection (yes, thats a B, not a D, its a lame joke, i hope you enjoy it) :) at the ripe old age of 25, i would like to get back into what i originally had planned, which was C++ game programming ... wish me luck (*walks off into the sunset, cue campy tear-jerking music*)

    looks pretty cool, but it does look kinda like a prettier version of that old 'chasm' game ... or quake 1 i suppose ... not to be critical, i loved both of those games ... and im in no place to be critical because i cant even do anything remotely this good ...

    speaking of which ... what would be the best way to start on a project like this, say 3d enigine, from a beginners level? i know that a 3d engine isnt even something you consider from a beginners level, but this is what i would like to be looking at doing some time in the future ... any one care to share how they got started on game programming? what would be the best plan of attack? or is it just a matter of sitting down with a C++ book, then a visual C++ book (or could anyone tell me what other avenues i might look at with regards to IDE, including under linux), then a game programming book etc etc??? and are there specific websites, examples, source code that i should be checking out???
    ive wanted to do game programming for ages, but ive never pulled my finger out and sat down and got into it, but now that the new version of the stupid accounting software i code at work has gone gold, i wanna clear my brain of VB and get down and dirty into some serious (and entertaining) coding ... any useful advice would be most welcome ...

    its a shame they neglected to tell anyone that bought their game that it was little more than a toolset to create "better" games ... given i bought the game to be able to play a cool SP game in the SW universe, never intending to play it online, its probably something i would have liked to have known ... ill wait until its on a budget label next time if i have to spend hours modding it before its in a playable state ...

    ... oh yeah, and btw, the stand alone SP Half-Life game kicked ass. no modding required. thats what a bit of time spent on design can get you. and i do agree with the lack of real time lighting, heck, quake 1 had that ...

    i cant believe you guys fell for this.

    a company releases a second grade tomb-raider-but-with-dead-people ripoff, destined to disappear into the archives of me-too crap gaming, and to try and save themselves on the way down, they come up with something that will offend all the right people and get them all sorts of publicity even in places where gamers really arent part of the target market.

    they could have saved themselves the trouble and just gave the lead character a massive pair of boobs.

    read the article if you have to, see it for the cheap publicity stunt that it is, move on, and hope that this game doesnt become more popular than it deserves ... its a shame that in the majority, games are rewarded with mainstream publicity only when they are offensive or go for outlandish publicity stunts like this, instead of being innovative and well designed.

    acclaim want to make you their bitch. maybe it worked.

    jedi knight 2 was by no means the definitive star wars game ... unless by "definitive" you mean

    - horrible level design in places ... instant-flame-death-reload anyone? (thats assuming you bothered to finish it) ... and endless basic square style rooms filled with crates (oldmanmurray.com would have a heart attack)

    - overall bad game design (you can take on the entire empire singlehandedly for 90% of the time, but for one small section of the game, if someone gets to trigger off an alarm, its game over because you are suddenly 'outnumbered' ... wrong, wrong, WRONG) ... and dependency on AI elements staying alive when the retards are under attack from a two legged walker, and only have explosive boxes to hide behind, which they are oblivious to ... no, no, NO

    - woefully innacurrate weapons (the first few levels where you only had the auto-blaster/whatever were suicide-inducing)

    - crap saber-on-saber combat that involved nothing more than whacking on the force speed power and then frantically hacking away

    - and ridiculously powerful boss enemies ... you try and beat them for 45 mins straight then give up and resort to alternate ways of taking them out ...

    ... to beat the first boss (the girl) i eventually waited until she jumped over my head, then force pushed her up so high that when she fell to the ground she died, the second guy (the impossible one with that shield thing), i had to trick using an AI bug and an sentry gun to be able to stand behind him and massacre him without him even taking notice of me, and the final guy i had to kill by collapsing a rock column on him ... playing the level on the hardest setting made these guys impossible to take on normally ...

    ... the only good bits were right near the end when you had full force powers and could push and pull the enemy around the place and take weapons out of hands and stuff, but the pain to get to that position in the first place was not worth the reward ... someone get a book on game design out there quick!!!

    fark.com has a cool thing where it changes all instances of the string "first post" to "boobies!!!" so if you get morons who find themselves on a thread that hasnt got any posts yet and they add a pointless "FIRST POST!!!" message cause they can then their 'cool' first post simply says "BOOBIES!!!" ... hehehe
