I also participated in a school project, on setting up a LAN which has a PDC and a couple of clients. Now keep in mind this was a "beginners" networking class at the time, but the majority of students had some exposure to the windows server environment, very few had any with Linux or Novell. The instructor had us start with installing/configuring Novel NDS 6.1. Setup your O, Ou's, users, printers etc etc. And then setup different permissions, block/allow certain users from particular resources. We then did the same thing with Windows NT 4, Win2k, and then SUSE. At the end of the course the instructor did a survey of which OS was perferred by the students. Novell won just slightly over SUSE, followed by Win2k the NT4. Novell "just worked" Never crashed, Was easier to admin, and had a lot of community support. If a bunch of students could setup a small LAN with NDS in a months time, an admin with more experience should have no problems.
I run gallery as well and it actually integrates perfectly into geeklog. (Shamesless plug http://www.becauseimbored.com/ No its not Pr0n:) I am also currenlty working on another site based off of Gallery2 which has some great improvments. The CVS source is fairly stable, and the features which have been added to gallery2 are great.
Linking to webcam images - These images will auto-update at an interval that you decide.
New panaroma module that allows viewing panaromic pictures taken with a digital camera. I havent tested this module yet, nor will I ever get a chance, but a very cool feature none the less.
Shopping Cart I havent used this yet, but for an amature photographer to sell his/hers works this could be a really nice feature.
Displaying of movies - Im not sure on the compatibilty with this particular feature but it uses ffmpeg to display the movies. I tested this on a episode of futurama standard MPEG2 encoding and it seemed to work fine
New user registration/creation of new user albums - When a new user registers it will automagically create a album based on that user.
User Comments - users can make comments and vote on pics.
Nokia Upload API - Apparenlty certain certain nokia phones can interface with this API and upload pictures taken from the camera phone. I currently do this using a bash script a perl script called galleryadd and postfix. Postfix receives the email forwards it to procmail whcih calls the bash script which then invokes galleryadd. (another shamless plug http://www.wapcams.net/Email pics@wapcams.net if you want to add something:)
Like Gallery1 it used a MySql backend and php scripting. Themes are also being addressed in G2 to make it easier for the admin to customize the look and feel of his/her site.
There is also talk of implemting a "Click to buy" function which will allow you sell your pics through gallery. Overall its looks very promising. And new features are being added all the time. Check it out http://gallery.sourceforge.net/
You may as well get used to paying a monthly fee or give up on play games. With the constant revenue that a monthly based subscription offers companies who male the game, I would bet dollars to peso's that most future games will migrate to a system like this.
I agree. You even get experience when finding a new location. For example, your in a new are you havet explored before, lets take westfall. There are four or 5 different farming sites within this area and you get 50-120ish xp when you find each one. Its not a lot but its free. The simple fact that you get xp JUST for exploring a new area is a welcomed added bonus.
I don't mean to pigeon hole people into a stereo type but for the sake of simplicity I am going to.
I too spent countless hours on the computer growing up (Im 25) but my parents strongly encouraged me (not quite force, but close) to go out into the real world, (whatever that is for a teen) and interact with real people. Go play sports, get into a band, ride bikes, or go for a drive when they are old enough. And you know what? I am glad they did.
*HEALTH*
I am hearing a lot of people say that their parents never forced them off the computer, and while that may seem fine there is a reason why obesity is a major problem in today's younger generation. With XBOX, Game Cube, PC Games, all offering some sort of interaction with other people, via IM, there is little reason for teens to leave the house. Many teens do not take their health seriously and as a result develop bad habits that continue into their adult years.
I am by no means a saint, and I also have bad habits but because my parents encouraged physical exercise those bad habits do not impact me nearly as bad.
*SOCIALIZING*
I was a huge geek growing up but I also understood how to talk and interact with people who were not geeks. This is an important skill that will serve them well through their entire lives. Like most teens this skill needs to be nurtured and encouraged just as much if not more than learning a computer. Having had to interact with some of the geeks at M$ I can assure you that this skill is not emphasized enough.
Bottom line is get the kids off the damn computer. There are plenty of things to do off the computer, and it will help them later on down the road. And if all else fails get them an OGO
You beat me to it:) Bottom line is M$ is in the buisness of making a profit. And any major corporation is going to find every loophole, and round about way to make a dime. The fact that this is/. and that the article is based on Microsoft "greed" rather than say.....Oracles "greed" only reason anyone cares
This seperatists attitude will not work in the world today. We are a global economy, we can no longer afford to "let other countries do what they want" However this applies to the United States as well. In a perfect world every nation would know what the other is doing. In fact, in a perfect world, we would share knowledge and information, unofortunately that is not the world with which we live in.
You are already a target. What makes you immune? You think just because you didn't get front stage and center and announce you were fighting, that you are safe? Furthermore, people don't ride the back of the US military because we are a bully, they ride our backs because everyone else wants a piece of the pie. And because we have the most powerful military in the world, so it is a pretty good back to ride on.
Actually you're wrong. I am under an HMO and I chose the PCP (Primary care provider) that I go to. And guess what, when I needed a specialists help (gastro) I looked one up, and asked for a referral, and I got it. So your "CANNOT CHOOSE" arguments falls quicker than a dress on prom night. And as far as guns are concerned, "who'd use and UZI for hunting?"......
For your standard moose or elk i probably use a 12 gauge. However for Canadian Elk, I believe an M-16 is in order. You see, Canadian Elk/moose tend to be much more stubborn than others, I've heard its because of the French blood the courses through their veins. But I am probably just speculating.
Why don't you leave? If you distrust the government that much, get out. Trust me we won't miss you, nobody will miss you. Because despite all of the points you just listed, more people flock to the US then any other country in the world. We shell out more money/supplies in a day for foreign aid then most do in a year. I am not saying that we do not have our faults, no country/government is perfect. But all you people who see fit to point the finger at our government, and bitch about a policy you don't agree with, need to think about this - How did your ELECTED officials get into office?
Where were you when the PATRIOT act was being written? Did you get involved in some way? Write your congressman, get other of similar thinking to write / email / phone / IM (j/k) anything to get the word out that if you agree with this bill, you will not get re-elected. I can hear your bullsh*t excuses now "Most people do not know what the Patriot Act is all about, or the DMCA or....." Guess what? Rome wasn't built in a day, and REAL change won't either. How about getting off the/. forums and start getting the word out. You love to bitch, but $10 says all you did was sign an electronic petition against the PATRIOT Act if you even did that. Put up or shut up, all of you.
Thank god most "Network Engineers" or "Data Tech" dont know T1's, much less afford the $3000 T-Berd 107 or $15,0000 2310. T1/T3 test/acceptance, is kind of like tattooing. No one is going to sit you down and explain the do's and dont's, they also are not going to explain what the pretty flashing lights are on the test set. You either have to A.> Start of as a Cable monkey run cross-connect wire for a few years while you work your way up. or B.> (what i did) Get your company to pay for formal DS1/DS3 installation/troubleshooting class. Nothing beats actually using a test set, and seeing what happends when X occurs.

Actualyl I remeber reading somewhere in their forums that they are using EMC (dont know model numbers) with an Oracle DB
