    Hmm... I would investigate some other possible sources for the trouble, too hot a room as mentioned above, perhaps some problems with the lab's power supply? The failure rate seems too high. Maybe you were unlucky and got a bad batch.

    I've had quite a few PC's (Mac's included) die on my and about 3/4 of could be traced to bad power/spikes/surges/outages. It's no fun to see 3 computers die at the same time.

    Sorry to hear that you had to waste your cash to find out, but remember, research the hell out of anything before buying! The ATI USB chipset issue was known about quite quickly, and became very wideknown. Their mobo's with the ULI chips are great, their new chipset seems to work pretty well too, judging from this article.

    But I think one could argue that by proxy we are owning slaves. All those people in China, Indonesia, wherever working for less than a dollar a day so that we can have our Nike shoes, cheap electronics, you name it. Yeah we don't have shacks in our backyards where the slaves live, we've just outsourced them overseas.

    The CBC had run a story on this a couple nights ago, some of the info were large databases of soldiers personal info - sin numbers etc - from I think they were pay records. The reporter had randomly picked a few and confirmed that they were real and matched.

    If this stuff gets to the 'terrorists' and they are able to track down someone's wife/husband and kids, the soldiers are not going to be too happy with the fact that the enemy can all of a sudden go and hold their kids hostage or kill them outright.

    This is very scary stuff!

    have you looked into a palm? It's great for basic PIM functions, not quite so great for video/music the fancy stuff, but seems to me that you don't really need those.

    the mini has the intel 950 (i think) which while being their best integrated graphics chip is still a very very mediocre graphics chip. There is no way to compare it to a 6800go a pretty high end graphics chip for laptops. The 950 is something like a geforce 2 with some pixel shaders thrown in along wiht intels so so drivers. Mind you it has some nice accelaration for video and 2d, but definately a joke for 3d. I imagine that in just about every other benchmark the mini is pretty close to your laptop, but it is the graphics that are holding it back in 3dmark.

    I would be curious how it compares to laptops that use the 950 as well. even more curious if anyone has windows media centre running on a mini (with tuner and external hdd).

    I have an Athlon XP 1600+ (1.4 ghz), 768 mgs of ram, a geforce 6200 agp (mind you this one can do pixel shader 3) but over i think the ati is a better video card, and tha game runs pretty well so far, 800x600 and getting over 10-15 fps consistently. This is with texture detail on high, but some of the other fancy effects turned down/off. This isn't really a twitch game, so getting 15-20 fps is just fine.

    now if I could only find more time to play.

    To my (very limited) knowledge, the encrypted signal can go over DVI as long as the sender (hd player/computer) and your TV have the proper encoder/decoder chips in them. Whether your TV has the decoder chip I wouldn't have a clue, but my guess would be a no, so you're still outa luck.

    WTF!!! Monopoly my ass. Lets see off the top of my head, you can get your mp3's from WallMart, Napster, Yahoo's Store, allofmp3, whatever Future Shop (canada's best buy) uses, and a lot more. You want an mp3 player, lets see Creative, Samsung, Sony, iRiver, and again dozens more. How is this a monopoly? Someone buying an iPod knows that it works with iTunes, someone buying a Samsung player knows that they have to use whatver catchphrase of the day Microsoft comes up with - I belive it's PlaysForSure - but don't quote me on that. The iPods, and any other player lets you play regular old mp3's.

    Just because people make a (hopefully informed) choice to use an iPod/iTunes does not make it a monopoly.

    If I buy a Toyota I don't expect to walk into a Ford or Honda dealership demanding that they stock replacement parts for my Car. If I buy an Xbox don't expect it to play PS2 games. If I walk into McDonalds I don't expect them to serve me a Whopper.

    Hmmm... What about regular strategy (un-realtime), simulations (planes, trains, automobiles, heck even bridges), "western-style" RPG's, MMORPG's, nethack, minesweeper, solitaire. PC's and Consoles are in different markets, hence things like dance and dance revolution are not too popular with the 3lit3 hax0rs and their souped up PC's. There is nothing wrong with rhythm games or the mario party games, but they are not pc games, likewise one does not buy a console for some serious sim games.

    You buy the system that has the games that you want to play, it's that simple.

    I don't really get what trade secret there is to protect. I have a ballot, choose choice A, computer scans my ballot, sees that I chose A, adds one vote for A to the database. Take database, tabulate results, tada~ election result. Where in the world do IP rights come into play? It's a box that has a scanner and counts. I can set one up with a cheap dell, ocr scanner and network access to a database. I'm sure there is also at least a half dozen Macromedia Flash tutorials doing the exact thing, choose A or B, add result to database.

    On another thought, shouldn't the government just put these machines together themselves? Yeah I'm a commie Canadian, but the election is run by the state/federal governemnt, the staff I am assuming are state/federal employees, for those states that might still use paper ballots, the counters would be someone hired by the state/federal government, why in the world would you outsource such a critical piece of equipment to some third party?!?! I mean do they outsource ballot recounts to india as well? What gives? Shouldn't the government put these machines together, open them up to anyone that asks and whow them exactly how they work. This isn't the Soviet Union or anyth^0103030 carrier lost.

    On a serious note, think about having to hook them both up to your high-speed internet line, another thing to suck power, switching inputs from one to the other to the tv or having to spring for an adapter. Yes, trivial things for us /.ers but try to explain to your son-in-law that you only have 2 ip addresses from your DSL co., one for the computer, and he has to choose which xbox gets live access.

    Well... it's as next gen as the xbox360 is next gen to the original xbox. Faster processor, better graphics. I'm sorry you were expecting something more? Take a look at all the games lined up, do you see anything next gen about them? Yeah, they have better textures, more polygons, run in HD, but other than that they are still the same games. TES4 is as 'next gen' as anything else coming out, and believe me getting anything beyond 30fps in this game won't make a difference, it's not exactly quake.

    you have Intelligent Design. I mean really why try to cure cancer, go to mars, do any sort of research. If you don't know how it was made, it must be 'intelligently designed' and that's the end of that. That big hole left in your thesis, yup, intelligent design.

    Science is based on finding new things, figuring out how they work, and generally in the process finding more new things to figure out, the search for knowledge is part of human nature. How could anyone just write things off as being 'intelligently designed' and not question why it's there and what it does.

    I mean, why bother spellchecking my /. posts, my bad spelling and grammar are a result of intelligent design, who am I to question the superbeings infinate wisdom.

    Just curious, from personal experience half the stuff available on P2P networks now ends up being pr0n, no matter what one was actually trying to download. Does anyone know if the RIAA actually has to verify if the file is indeed a proper mp3? Could I just create goatse clips set to the proper file size and name them 'top40hitz.mp3' wait to get sued, and sue back for slander. Would I get to present goatse's ass as evidence in court?

    Sorry, not trying to flame, but DUH! you're in a god-dammed war, you better be spending less money on things like seeing movies. Maybe it's because there's a small part of the movie going public on the other side of the globe. For all we know they are all major movie buffs and would see 5 movies a week if they were still at home and not getting shot at in Iraq.

    I'm not trying to say that the movies that are getting put out are any good - the majority are just crap - that has always been the case - but I think a large part of the demographic that those movies are aimed at are not in the country right now. I don't mean to say that people in the military have bad taste, but they are usually in the 18-30 demographic that most things are aimed at.

    If you buy the full version of Acrobat - not just the reader - you get a 'PDF printer' where anything you print to it gets converted to PDF. It even includes 'create PDF' menus that get added to all your MS Office apps. So this is MS just forking up the licencing fee and building it in.

    Sure it's different from having it system level, but it has been availabe for years. You could take any postscript file and run it through Distiller since at least Acrobat 4.

    Not as easy as OS X, but if you are serious about dealing with PDF's than you should have the full version of Acrobat anyway - which has the 'printer' included.

    All that graphical 'goodness' is running maily thanks to the fact that windows esentially built DirectX into the compositing engine for the desktop. So it should come as no surprise that they wouldn't really care too much about implementing OpenGL as they are running everything in DirectX already.

    Yeah it's the exact same thing they did with IE, but come on like you didn't expect it.
