The distance that can be felt from websites, and sometimes their shoddiness, can leave a bad feeling that makes you wonder if it is legit or not.

If you haven't noticed Mac OS X is bairly a Unix by most peoples consensus. It has a Mach Kernel which had to be cut in half and made non-beautiful because most/all benchmarks indicated that its performance sucked. It only has typical Unix at parts of its userland functionality, and even in this situation it's not a typical Unix because it's filesystem and configuration is not close to standard. If you want Unix then I'll point you to Solaris, AIX, and maybe even FreeBSD and Linux ... but not Mac OS X.

LOL, actually performance of typical unix apps suffer on the newer MACH 3 based Kernels. From what I've heard you're right, Apple had to place a lot of the FreeBSD kernel code into the MACH kernel because seperating this to user space wasn't worth the beauty. I believe a lot of this is reflected on the apple web page describing the OS X design. The whole problem boils down to the fact that writing software for a Micro-Kernel demands a different model than writing code for the typical make function call get return value approach. Not many people like to send and get messages, do things asyncronously, it's quite different from old school unix systems programming. Also checkout the wikipedia page on the Mach Kernel.

This is very interesting. The basic premise of your argument is that all people should be free to do what they want to do. And that lawmakers should stop trying to legislate their thoughts on normal useage to people, that lawmakers should allow stupid people to do stupid things. "Rediculous limitations" are quite subjective. The government used to allow coccaine, till it gained the perception that black people used it and were crazed by the drugs affects. But we found out even white people couldn't handle it. (early america was pretty damn racist, if anything it was a class issue, and even the middle class couldn't handle coccaine) Public outcry, typically by the crazy right and left that want to control others is too much weight to bear.

Plus, people do not live their lives in a vacuum, the affects of the drug addict have an effect on the taxes I pay...that is unless we become completely heartless and let these people rot with starvation, but even then they must be disposed of somehow. There are other examples, but allowing free-flow drug use is probably not a good idea.

The bright side is it is easy to find these cars that are old, cheap, and in great shape. (A 1991 Oldmobile Eighty-Eight with 90K miles and in great shape is hardly old though.) I have no problem with driving a 'Granny car' and the insurance is really cheap. Though I am about ready to move up to a pickup, I'm getting sick of driving vehicles with no pulling power, no bed, and minimal offroad capabilities.

I think people need to realize that it is ok to drive a car, especially a cheap one that is cheap to maintain, and have an older (carburated) pikcup that they use seldom. This type of combination is great.
