First, the 1998 Oldsmobile '88 (my mother has one) is a series II, which is a newer engine, and made much better. My car has the older style engine, I think most GM products switched to the Series II in 1996 and 1997. Pontiac probably switched first like usual, since they're practically a test bed for GM products. Your are correct, these cars are not whimpy and are pretty adequate, but they're nothing to write home about. I've driven several 3800 engines, and mine is typical and in great shape with only 90K miles. My older brother has a 90 Buick Electra with over 200K miles, and it still runs awesome, he practically uses it like a spare pickup too.
The valve issue is something to take into consideration though. Though with a glass pack, or something a little more restrictive, and the catalytic converter removed the pressure would still be ok. Though hardly anyone puts after-market exhausts on the mid-sized GM cars.
First off, wtf is with all the stupid hippies on this damn site? I mean come on.
Next I would like to talk about realistic use of resources. We don't all have to go out and buy a new freaking vehicle to cut down on a few MPG. I will use a case in point.
I own a 3.8L V6 1991 Oldsmobile. It doesn't have much for power, or in fact much of anything. It's an ugly vehicle that drives from A to B. When I took my first longish (6 hour) trip I got ~29 miles per gallon. Starting from there put synthetic oil in it. Get a K&N air filter. Put a bigger exhaust on it to move the air out as well, and you are looking at a car that should hop mileage up to around 35 or more. Most of the time you will lose a few miles per gallon because your vehicle is in need of a tune up. Bad tires, old dirty oil, dirty air filters etc wreak havoc on your gas mileage.
You can find many vehicles, that with a little simple help can really save on gas useage. They also do not cost $30K. The cost you save on a used car + simple upgrades are both easy on the pocket book but easy on the crude oil supply and easy on the land fills/junk yards. As others have mentioned, resources do go into producing these newer vehicles.
Damn people, look at this a little more subjectively and use your brains.
I wish companies would realize, that if one product is reviewed negatively, then the customer can see that and turn to a different better product. Very rarely will the business lose a sale because of honesty. If anything, it will help to drive bad products off the market, and replace the bad products with good products. These bad products are surely only a drag on the market system, and creating friction. Does Newegg want to receive customer support calls, handle bad motherboards that keep getting sent back in for replacement, etc.? Is management at these companies retarded? Not only all of this, but typically the better products cost a bit more and have better features, so these would rake in more profits.
It is, or at least was, the discussion that mattered. Recently the signal noise ration has gotten horrible, makes a person think about leaving. Just look at the moderation taking place, if your threshold is set to 3, there are very few posts that make it. The proof is in the pudding!
The IE users can download firefox. The firefox users can't download IE.
Amen, though i think this whole discussion is a mute point. All that really needs to be done, is to have a 5 second pause page telling the visitor that they should upgrade to a more compliant page, then proceed to the page they were requesting, do that once per visit. Situation solved, the user gets informed, and the site still gets it's visitor.
Though I think everyone is forgetting that Firefox isn't completely compliant.
To enforce the number of weeks to allow checkins is good, but it is probably more important, to enforce a ratio, or a period of time to do bug fixes/testing.
that doesn't really change much, the original post should not be flamebait. hardly ever do discussions arise, involving doing things to items that are only available under nda. how many articles did you see showing how to build the open solaris source code before it went public?
ok, i'm way too uninformed.
apparently amiga produced a version of the A3000 that came with UNIX System V. this was the A3000UX, shown here and here. If someone has any bits of information in recollection of this machine could you inform us all. This is very interesting, I never knew this existed.
Thanks for the informative post. If this toolbar does make adding bookmarks to one set location easy, adding rss feeds quickly, checking email, along with searching using yahoo, then this should indeed be a very cool tool for many Yahoo users. I'll try it when I get home from work (I don't wanna mess up my workstation's config just to try some lame add on.)
I used to be a big yahoo fan, but in recent years I have used google exclusively for search. Though yahoo email is still better from what I've seen. If google had a geocities-like functionality for it's users then they would have a better chance at getting even more market share. Though the clincher for me has to be "My Yahoo!".
since the parent started out as a Score: 0, i won't try to mod the parent up, he still won't get seen. but he shouldn't be modded troll!
MicroSoft has a bad history of hiring managers/senior programmers from other companies and having them do the exact same work they used to do, but under their new four colored flag. So indeed: For the greater good, sue them (back)!:p
As the other poster said, the engine has to warm up to run properly, thus cutting your mpg down some. Where I live we have to let our cars warm up for 5/10/15 minutes, just to get it warmed up and the windows to thaw, not to mention letting the engine get ready.
But it is a commonly known fact that higher octane mixes such as those with 15% ethanol will lower your gas mileage. They do not try to do this in the summer, because in the summer it is not suggested to drive on a high octane mix.
When will open source grow up and recognise that the the market won't support this many variations on a them?
It's pretty simple, once a developer/group/company builds up a lot of functionality in API's or Classes, or just gains experience using one language, it is easiest and best for them to try to use that language with the new addon instead of trying to learn something new (such as RoR).
It is not always possible or viable to use something just because it is the "great platform."
South Dakota in no way is one of the leading states in production of corn. I live here and can guarantee that. We don't have the levels of rain fall that is needed to produce corn at the levels that Iowa, Minnesota, Indiana (etc) do. We do have a fairly large number of cattle though, that's because we're basically a grassland if you count out the really dry parts in the Badlands.
But this whole article being discussed is bogus, they take into account the Sun's energy put into the plants, but then don't take into account gluton, which is the by product of corn based ethanol and can be fed or mixed into cattle feed.
Seriously, it's funny how any bugs or exploits related to Microsoft products get the front page derogatory treatment on slashdot, and any other vulnerabilities from Linux, Apple, etc don't get the same sensationalistic coverage. Obligatory: You must be new here.
I could understand a performance based pricing model, but two CPUs which were slower than one really fast costing more in licensing fees never made sense anyway. Right on.
Mod Parent up!
And the post should definitely not be modded as Flamebait, since when taken in context of the current article (the GBA dying) the editors are clearly not grounded.
They are very different in many ways, included basic theological background. Check it out: Wikipedia of Mormon To put it basically, none of the other churches have taken as their basic book of foundational beliefs from books not in the Bible. Even the Roman Catholic church chose to include the Apocrypha but not as a source of foundational truth. Because of this they are never grouped with other churches of Christianity.
actually, the primary basis for such an argument as that would be this part:
This prohibition extends to derivative work products that are modifications of, or derivative works based on, UNIX System V source code or technology.
the technology in the linux, is fairly similar to the technology that came with UNIX System V. after all, Linux is a UNIX like operating system, especially in respect to System V. So now it will be interesting how IBM is going to fend off the "derivative technology" claim.
in theory it shouldn't be fairly hard, because most of the work that IBM put into linux is in additions to it, such as file systems. (maybe other things, i am not familiar anymore) these types of things are not provided with the UNIX System V source, and shouldn't be covered under the SCO license. but if IBM cannot redistribute derivative products from the SysV code, then i suppose they couldn't distribute things like file systems that were originally implemented for SysV. so in some respect it is possible that SCO has a leg to stand on. i suppose IBM could easily argue that the products they put into the linux kernel were based on something other than products in the SysV code. but i am not an expert, by any means, so maybe others should weigh in.
I hate to sound extremist/revolutionist/crazy, but this stuff really pisses me off. But what am I to do about it? Grabbing my guns and storming off to nowhere accomplishes nothing. The common person has no way to express him/her-self. Our politicians have let us down, and we have no recourse. It would seem at first that the traditional Lenin view of things is our only option, but history has not had favorable results with the proletariat trying to fix the problems with the structures of society, government, business.
My initial hate toward society and all the other evil things started in high school. Following this I read some Marx, Lenin, and other works (including the Bible, as I was raised in a Christian home.) But there was really no answers. The view of the 'Communists' didn't seem to work in the real world since most people have this thing called 'Human Nature' which destroys all good intentions. And Christianity cares less about now and more about helping on person at a time and considering everything in the view of past, present and future.
So I guess, in the end I don't know. And I don't think anyone else does either. How do we tell the people in power that we matter and that the @$#*ing Coorporations do not!?!
Indeed, what Schwartz said must be taken in context. He is reported as having had a chat with some leader of an African (Southern part) country, during which their conversation became about how both FS/OSS has such a huge chance to help these countries. But the primary reason for this, is not that the software is open or free as in liberty; no, the reason is the price. These countries prefer something free that they can get to as many people as they can.
Pardon my lack of enthusiasm (and I'm at work) to look up exactly where I saw this at.

Sun Solaris 10 is also based on SVR4. But you probably knew that.
Amen.

Don't worry, there is still a God, and the next president will be worse than Bush.
