as already mentioned, HTTP/1.1's If-Modified-Since header field would be a first hint
another way of minimizing the DDoS would be to use the Syndication module, which informs client programs when to update the feed - this would still mean that everyone tries to GET the RSS at the same time, but what about randomizing updateBase?
As usual, service packs incorporate mainly (in XPSP2: security-) fixes, no new features.
Internet Explorer SP2 however will include some new features like popup-blocking and better mime-type handling but nothing along the lines of better support for PNG alpha transparency...
Morse codes can be quite useful, even today.
There is a Linux kernel patch floating around (IIRC it was in -ac, don't know about mainstream) that adds the output of kernel panics via keyboard LEDs. Nice for early oopses.
Winamp5 continues where Winamp 2.95 left off, sure, Winamp3 technologies got merged over time but mainly as a plugin, which is responsible for Modern skins.
Sure you can run Winamp5 without it but you don't want to after having seen it in action;)
Freeform skinning & MAKI scripting are much improved spin-offs from Wasabi (from a more recent build than the one used in Winamp3 final), two of three developers are now working on Winamp5 (Francis and Christophe; the lead developer Brennan had to leave recently), so Winamp5 really shows the power of Wasabi and after all Wasabi components are supported in Winamp5 (see Plugins\freeform\wacs\ColorEditor for example), though I am not sure if it works with raw Wasabi SDK build #499 or we have to wait for a yet unpublished version...
Freeform skinning is done by a plugin (gen_ff.dll), you can still use the old skin (or simply delete the file), which is faster and you still have access to almost all new Winamp5 features (Media Library).
You only can't use Wasabi components this way, but as of now only the Coloreditor (for freeform skins anyway) is done as Wasabi component.
another one: AOL icons after Winamp install (there was no way to avoid them in the original Winamp 3.0 installer, IIRC the user can decide in more recent 2.x versions)
would be cool, but to late for Europe

GNC: "Flight, GNC - they accidentally downmoded to inertial. They're back in
auto now."
[Either the PLT or CDR accidentally bumped the stick, which the flight control
system interprets as the crew taking manual control from the autopilot. The FCS
downmodes from Auto to Inertial. The crew saw that they did this, and went back
to Auto.]
Sorry, my message wasn't clear, Zire has a black & white display unlike all other recent models, which have a grayscale display (III, V, even m105 has one) if I interpret this comparison and Zire's Datasheet correctly.

Winamp 2.x plugins should continue working, there might a bugfixed version of your plugin available.
Mod parent up!

Nullsoft's NSV, an encapsulation format currently using MP3 and VP3, and it is of course being supported by Winamp
Nullsoft's own channels, e.g. Radiohead Videos (500kbps) are using VP5 for video, so I guess this will be the future...
