  1. So when... on Microsoft States Full TCP/IP Too Dangerous · · Score: 4, Interesting
    So, they're going to re-disable raw sockets? I'd suggest that the IP implementation on SP2 is broken already. For example - when will you be able to send more than 8K in a single packet using a Java Socket on Windows XP Service Pack 2?
    String sString = "Some string more than 8K";
    Socket client;
    PrintWriter sock_out;
    try
    {
    client = new Socket (InetAddress.getByName
    ("127.0.0.1"), 5678);
    sock_out = new PrintWriter
    (client.getOutputStream(), true);
    sock_out.flush();
    sock_out.println (sString);
    sock_out.close();
    client.close();
    }
    catch (EOFException eof)
    {

    }
    catch (IOException e)
    {

    }

    Try it yourself - see if you can receive more than 8K in a recv() call in Windows XP SP2. You can't.
    If you do the same on Linux or OS X, you can. On Windows XP SP1, you can.

    Thanks, Microsoft.

    Tressel knows this, and with the secondary Ohio State has (not to mention the offense) Texas is toast. Plus, Mack Brown is as big of a moron as Lloyd Carr is (hooray Lloyd - 1-3 vs. Tressel).

    I live in Texas - these fans down here sure are proud of the vastly overrated Big 12... who the Big 10 consistently stomps the hell out of in bowl games.

    OU struggled with an Oklahoma State team that the Buckeyes crushed. Texas struggled with a Michigan team that the Buckeyes manhandled... this could be a National Championship year for the Buckeyes, and I'm going to love every minute of it.

    ls is an application. It's a utility, not part of the kernel.

    The reason IE is part of the Windows operating system is because of mshtml32.dll, shdocvw.dll, etc. - System DLL's that explorer.exe uses. Really, all IE does is to wrap the browser control and provide bookmarks, etc.

    In all seriousness, this is not a bad thing - it promotes code re-use in the Windows code base and prevents Windows developers from having to continually re-invent the wheel (or browser). The problem is that IE (ahem, the Internet Explorer_Server Window Class) is a complete piece of vulnerable, buggy, garbage.

    It's really easy to use though - Anyone can write a simple MFC based browser - just use CHTMLView for your view class, add an address bar, implement navigation buttons, and hook it up to either the correct CHTMLView member function or the correct COM call if you're doing it that way, and you're done. Should take 2 hours tops.
