Maybe your CSS development is a bit more exotic than mine. I've just started working on CSS pages and having to re-work every page I create to look right in IE6 got old real fast. Easily doubled the time it to took make a page. I load the same page in IE7 and it looks fine.

The CSS support may not be "Perfect", but it's close enough to the rest of the browsers on the market for me.

The bad news is that I still have to design with IE6 in mind. It'll be years before it's useage rate is low enough to ignore.

I also hate the UI for IE7. I'm hoping that they locked it down for the Beta, and will unlock the normal release.

Keeping track of libraries and versions is just crazy and offers no benifit to a user who just wants to install the software and get it to work. Yes, it will increase the download size of the software. Big deal. It's a far better option than not being able to get the software to compile.

Outsourcing usually involves getting rid of entry level positions in a company. Look at the job ads today and the current "Junior" or "Entry level positions" in IT require years of experience just to be considered. It used to be that if you graduated college, you had a shot at the first rung in the company.

Now that there is no low level pool of workers in the company to promote, businesses are having a hell of a time finding people to hire for higher level positions. I was just looking at http://www.avaya.com/gcm/master-usa/en-us/corporat e/careers/careers.htm, a local branch. Every single one of their job ads required 5 to 8 years of experience in the specific job field. Almost every time I talk to someone about how hard it is to find good IT help, I tell them to grab someone from their internship program. Usually their response is "Oh, right, we should implement one of those."

And if all human beings are equally deserving of those opportunities, then you should be against outsourcing. Because those opportunities are no longer available in the host country.

It took me several days to get a very basic perl script to work. The error messages for a non-functioning script are horrible.

I ended up trying to get help from the #perl channel on IRC. I was dressed down for presenting them with a script that didn't have those switches turned on, that I had no idea existed. Went and fixed it up just the way they wanted it, and was told my issue was with the module I was using at the time. No way to have known it acted like that without experience.

Writing out a few lines of code shouldn't be an exercise in frustration; at least with C you get a decent debugger. I'm learning Ruby and it's been wonderful so far.

And I've only been using it for a couple of days, and a couple hours into it my router stopped working, so this. I've never used any other Linux flavor as a desktop machine. I keep a Linux box on the side and I use it for experimentation.

I'm almost done getting things to where I want them to be, the biggest issue was:

It doesn't check to see if you're using a dual-core processor. Top said I had a load of 11, just from regular use. You have to install the SMP kernel manually; it's very easy to do though. Just select from their package manager, install, reboot.

Their package manager is pretty good; their support forum is great. I get 2 months of unlimited email support. And I bought the Premium edition, which comes with Crossover Office. In case there's a Windows program that I just can't live without.

MP3 ripping and playing worked "Out of the box". Although there was no box since I chose the online download. I could have saved 20$ by ordering it through Amazon, but I was ready to switch over ASAP.

It came with some software for moving your Windows settings over, but I really didn't have a lot to move over. My Firefox settings moved over really well, my background picture didn't.

GAIM wasn't offered on their "Supported Software" package manager. But it's very easy to add other Debian sources and use those.

I know what you mean about the free distros. And Xandros has been great with the stuff...within its reach. At any rate, it's nice to be able to email them because you can be sure they'll help you. Instead of joining an IRC channel, or tossing out a question on a message board in the hopes that some kind soul will help you out.

See those words there? The part where I'm deciding to send money to MS or a Linux company?

But to expand on why I haven't purchased a copy of Windows...

I've built all my own PCs.

Every time you install a new motherboard, you need to wipe and install so Windows will load the correct drivers. Yes it's possible to do a repair, but it's better this way. Every time my system slows to a crawl for all the cruft Windows builds up, wipe and reinstall. Every time my system becomes corrupted beyond repair, wipe and reinstall.

How many times can I use a legit serial before MS says "Sorry man, it's no good anymore."

I refuse to buy a system that will cripple itself under the very ordinary circumstances I've mentioned above. When I pirated the OS, it's not an issue.

So then I decide to go legit. I'm going with anything but Windows.
