"People say that Macs are too expensive. So Apple finally released the Mini and people say it's not powerful enough. It's just excuses that boil down to "I won't pay for it no matter what, but here's my justification.""
Actually, I bought a Mini. I was curious about OS/X, but not curious enough to plunk down a grand or more for it.
Then I bought the Mac Mini. It lasted about a month, then I sold it. One of the reasons was: It's not powerful enough.
Other reasons: It doesn't "Just work" Plenty of bugs if you're a power user Many of the power user programs still don't work with 10.4 Apple put the heat on bittorrent sites, causing them to lock out new users. Inability to show the time AND the date on the toolbar, and their legendary tech support was unable to tell me how to do so.
It all adds up. I was lucky to get 2/3s the price I paid for it, one month later.
If I had spent the money on a regular PC, I'd be working with a nice, dual core system.
Remember folks; the Mainstream Media is superior to Bloggers due to their layers of fact checking editors and professional reporters. All who have been professionally trained and do this stuff for a living!
Far superior when compared to some guy sitting in his pajamas in his living room.
"It might be nice if Google, five years from now, is a powerful piece of open source technology that we all have free access to."...so, you've been paying to use Google?
Or Google mail? Or Google maps? Perhaps there are some secret codes they're not telling you about?
I believe they've already done this and are now figuring out the 45nm process.
I've been told that producing working chips at the lab to producing working chips at the factory is not a straightforward process.
Don't forget, this is a new fab, and a new process for making chips. No one has experence doing this, the machines have never been used before to do this.
All we see on the consumer end, is a box with a chip in it. They could probably make a movie on the difficulties of getting to that point.
In the beginning, wordpad automatically inserted "rich text" crap. So you couldn't use it to edit config files. You never knew what it would add on it's own.
"I hate to be the one to break this to you, but if movie producers can't make a profit selling movies, they won't continue to make movies."
Lets say, that this year none of the studios make a profit. Which is not farfetched when you look at what's been released this year.
Do you really think all the movie companies are going to go out of business? No.
They'll cut costs. And reduce overhead. They'll start filming in cheaper locations. They replace actors with cardboard cutouts. They *won't* stop making movies until they go out of business.
So, do you think downloading movies will run every single production company into bankruptcy? I don't.
Conflict between people is *normal*. And this is how they handle it? Sounds like the law firm is one of those insanely high pressure places where they leap on the slightest flaw or error.
I read the emails. Compared to most of the online flame wars I've seen, this was weak.
It's *gambling*! It's almost like the lotto, which is a tax on people who can't do math.
I already have an addictive personality. It only took me one hour in a gambling joint, where I lost all my money, to realize that I should never do it again.
Gambling is for people with too much money and no imagination.
Oook. And then what? You've installed it, and now you've got to actually get it working.
Not running. Working. With your web pages and other systems. Unless Postgres has gotten a lot easier since the last time I've tried to be productive with it, I'll pass again.
Every time I move my site I give postgres a shot. Every time it's more trouble than it's worth.
Those jobs are the *entry* jobs to the company though!
Sure, you can hire people off the street with skills. But isn't it easier to get lesser skilled people? You put them to work in the easy jobs, and you see how they perform in your work enviroment plus the get a better idea of how to work with your IT needs.
Now you have a pool to draw from when your higher level programmers bail, with a proven track record in the company.

Doesn't grass turn CO2 into O?
I like oxygen. A lot.

A job.

Dude, you're typing this on a computer.
Just curious, what do you think they do with all that profit?
R&D and building costs for new, cutting edge fabs go past a billion dollars. Do you think their new 64nm fabs come from the magic wishing fairy?
They're going to have to figure out how to make 64nm chips. This is hardcore applied physics to make the most advanced CPUs in the history of mankind.
Where do they get the money to pull this off? From us. We pay them.
It's "Bose", which means overpriced. Go online and do a search for "noise reduction headphones" and you can find something more reasonable.
In the beginning, wordpad automatically inserted "rich text" crap. So you couldn't use it to edit config files. You never knew what it would add on it's own.
Why not just run VMWare?
They're doing dual core chips with just the 90nm tech. With Intel's new 64nm fabs, it won't be long before quad cores come out.
Dude, I just admin two machines. No need to get all fancy-like.
Do a little research, the problem isn't technical or physics. It's political.

Right, and when one goes bankrupt, or buys out the other one, the commercials will come flying back.
In the real world, people at the bottom are more polite. People at the top do whatever the hell they want.
"...he's written more of Emacs than anyone save RMS, and that's literally the tip of the iceberg."
Uh, if it were literally the tip of the iceberg, shouldn't there be an actual iceberg invoved?
Where would he keep it?
And?
Oh no! Two people started to argue!
Oh no! Other people found out about it!

A Schlock Mercenary movie?
http://www.schlockmercenary.com/
Now that would be cool.
It's aimed for kids.
And if you know kids, there's no such thing as "Too many times"
I thought it had something to do with free beer.
