  1. Re:3 Things on RIAA Now Targets Pirates' Parents · · Score: 1
I love when people tell me what music sucks and what music I "should" be listening to. It makes my life so much easier.

You misunderstand, I mean that you shouldn't share Def Leppard because listening to their music in any format other than an entire album in a sitting does a great injustice to these seminal artists. POOOR SUUUM SHOOGAR ON MEEEEEEEH! IM HOT - STICKEE SWEET - FROM MY HANNS TUH MEH FEEET YAH!

The recording industry said Pate's daughter was offering songs by Billy Idol, Missy Elliot, Duran Duran, Def Leppard and other artists. Pate said that he never personally downloaded music and that he so zealously respects copyrights that he does not videotape movies off cable television channels.

First of all, Pate is fully within his rights to videotape movies off cable! It's called Fair Use!

The fact that he 'zealously respects copyrights' only means that he is misinformed, and most likely has been taken in by **IA propaganda that would lead you to believe that there is no Fair Use.

Secondly, I am looking forward to several things: The death of CD sales and painful realization of the RIAA that they are going down. The explosion of indi artists and methods of distribution, and no more focus-group artists!

Thirdly, and perhaps most importantly, let the 80's die a noble quick death, not a lingering bedridden death like the 70's. Ironic that I would say that, as I played in a 80's cover band, friends don't let friends share Def Leppard.

  9. Remember the old MP3.com? on Sell Your Music on iTunes Music Store · · Score: 1
They were pretty swell until the buyout, then everything went to hell. Artists weren't getting paid, you couldn't link there, had to sign in to listen to anything, took 30 clicks to hear something, limits on length and number of songs, all sorts of crappy rules and regulations, and f*cking Maddona and other Major Label songs started showing up. What was great and innovative is now a barely veiled spamvertiser of carefully hidden independent music, and a promoter of the highest bidder.

All this displaced some great talent, discouraged new artists, and soured the old artists who made the service into what it was.

The question remains: What prevents the same buyout/long downward spiral of CDBaby?

Uh, where do you think the source for the digital files comes from? What were you going to send them, mp3s? You must have the source files right? Burn them on a CD, have a (knowlegeable) pal do the artwork, and send it in. They will let you.

If 10,000 people order a CD, I'm sure you can find someone who wants a nice return on their money and front the bill for making them. Hell, I'll lend it to you (in exchange for a small fee, of course. ;)

A new Sony laptop that costs more and is less supported by the Linux community is suspected. I'm sure everyone in the Slashdot community will miss it - even if you didn't enjoy its parallel cpu work, there's no denying its contributions to popular culture, lickable UIs, battery life and one mouse button. Paypal for instance, hides its phone numbers deliberately so as to force email responses to issues. (email is easily ignored). Taken from paypalwarning.com (was an expired article on msnbc))

Any Paypal customer with a problem typically has an impossible time calling and talking to a real live person, and personal attention to electronic mail is virtually non-existent. According to Vince Sollitto (PayPal spokesman), Paypal intentionally makes the phone number very difficult to find in order to save costs. This is fine, except their Email "customer service" also leaves a lot to be desired. Many times you will get a canned response that doesn't address your initial Email message, if you get a reply at all. It doesn't do any good to complain anyway. When asked about customer complaints, Sollitto said the company reads them, but takes them with a grain of salt...

Just reminded me of the White House. Congress hardly responds to what the people want (file sharing, etc) why should the President be any different?

Since the people who are most at risk from this bill are probably never going to read it, hear about it or care, why not make a short monthly newsletter with links to a copy of the bill, plus the email, phone numbers, addresses of the congresswhores to write to or call.

This newsletter could also have a short, well written brief on the 'bill of the month' and links to the EFF and such.

    Then distribute it on P2P.

It seems to me that it is the very *best* use of P2P - to educate voters and pre-voters as to what they are in for if this bill passes. As long as it's small and quickly downloaded, such a message could get out to many who won't see these bills otherwise.

Hell, record a message and put it in spoofed mp3 files. (just like Madonna) Just get it out there.

It pains me to see promising technology like p2p legislated out of existence. Especially since it *can* be used to educate people, and allow distubution of works that wouldn't be touched by the 'content industry'.
