AFAIK, everyone can be considered a copyright holder, just by posting here, writing out a grocery list, writing in a journal, humming a random tune, doodling on a napkin.

If you were to put all the crap you make on a webpage like
    :www.mysecretpage.com/supersecreturl/DMCAviolato rs/cantreverseenginner.htm
you could basically assume that some one had 'broken your security' and start searching p2p networks for anything called: index.html, picture.gif, song.mp3, ect.

Then D0S everyone you see. They all *could* have your files.

Yes, this is stupid. But that's what they want. Of course, it will be changed to 'Real' copyright owners (read XXAA) and exclude you, but hey, thats how Corporate Congress works.

  4. OT- Dr. Who Sound Effects on It's Not a Police Box, It's a Tardis · · Score: 2
The BBC bought 3-5 Mellotrons back in the day to use for sound effects for Dr. Who. Mellotrons are one of the first 'Samplers'; they used magnetic tape loop to store about 6-8 seconds of sound *for each key*. Each key had a rotating group of three of these tapes. You could change the sound my moving a knob, which would rotate the carriers and load new tapes. You can hear a Mellotron (sometimes known as a Chamberlain) on the Beatles 'Strawberry Fields Forever' song - its the flute sound playing in the beginning.

OT as hell, but interesting nontheless.

I guess I don't see how the industry can *stay* in business with such 'overhead'. Sure, charge what the market will bear, but the market isn't bearing it anymore. The record industry is no longer about records, it's about marketing.

I don't have anything against a business defending its income, but when it tries to regulate/legislate my life to make a profit - that's where I draw the line.

Just because the RIAA has honest to gosh people working for them means nothing to me. Any business has people. Not all of them are trying to screw me.

She has managed to stay alive in a business that eats artists for lunch, and craps 'content' or product or whatever the flavor of the week is.

BTW... The Stones, Bowie, and McCartney are all examples of musicians who are excellent businessmen. I think they may have won a talent show award or something, too.

Seriously, if linux ran Photoshop, InDesign, ect. there'd be a hell of a lot more linux users. Which equals more drivers, more support, more usabillity, more eyes on code(bugfixes) and basically more software in general. Which equals better linux.

I could give a rat's ass, myself. What I have works. When I need to change (licencing, *forced upgrade*, end of support, blahblahblah) I will.

Until then ACs can offer these insightful comments, and linux will remain second bannana to Windows, OS X and whatever else that is usable to creative professionals. See Windows and OS X for color management, support for professional audio, and point-and-shoot printing.

    What a predicament, indeed.

Next was the license agreement. It was one of those (quickly-becoming typical) EULAS that mention the GPL stuff and then the proprietary stuff. Interesting about this license: There was no license to read BEFORE I opened the box, no shrink wrap or seal on the package, and yet the final paragraph of the EULA states that if I don't agree with the license and haven't broken the seal on the software I can return it for a refund. Oops! Too late. Of course, this is a review copy -- perhaps yours will be shrink-wrapped with a copy of the agreement on the outside.

Sure the Mac OS theme is intriguing, but I can get my mac jollies out using Basillisk. And 99 bucks for what? Lindows with a different name? Let me download it, and we'll see. Frankly, I'm happy with my win98. When I can run Adobe software, Acid & Soundforge on linux, I'll switch. Until then, OpenBeos gets my vote for 'alternative OS'.
