Wasn't this ship the Glomar Exlporer (the Hughes-funded recovery vessel)? That name seemed to jump out from the recesses of my mind when reading this story... Like another commenter said, I believe the Northern Fleet undersea wiretap was actually carried out, but wasn't in real time... divers would have to go out and recover recorded tape from the cable tap periodically, but this was scrapped when the aforementioned NSA mole spilled the beans... I guess if that had not occured the real-time uplink to Greenland would have been implemented. A funny consequence of the sub recovery cover story is that sea mining is still tossed around every now and then as an exploitable future source of resources... I have no idea how feasible it will ever be however
How can the WOPR determine its gotten each digit of the passkey correct? Do the SAC silos send back detailed error messages? "Sorry, you only got the 3rd and 5th digits of the PAL key correct. Please try again..."
XFree86 4.0 will have Precision Insight's Direct Rendering Interface which will bring Linux 3D framerates on par with Windows. Precision Insight has even hired Mesa's Brian Paul to bring his experience to the project. The day is coming when Linux will achieve gaming parity with Windows...
FOBS, an orbiting satellite-deployed nuclear weapon that would be utilized primarily for EMP-attack against the Soviet Union or continental US, was conceived of after a nuke test in the Pacific knocked out power in Hawaii. EMP as a nuclear detonation side effect wasn't even anticipated, but rapidly became a big design consideration for defense contractors constructing electronic warfare systems for the US... I doubt commercial vendors like Intel really take the possibility of nuclear attack under consideration when designing CPU's though, heh
Just wanted to clarify that Unreal Tournament has not yet been released... What was announced last week was that the port is almost complete and will likely be released with the retail version when it appears (which should be released shortly...)
Linus himself suggested educational software for his kids be ported by Loki to Scott Draeker, so odds are ports of edutainment titles aren't too far off...
Redstorm's new 3D RTS Force21 looks like it was designed to be the definitive non-turn-based land war simulation (even though its set 15-20 odd years from now)... they even had a Persian Gulf General as an advisor/designer.
A long time ago Homeworld's developer's expressed an interest in doing a Linux port... and Homeworld looks like one of the more original and unique upcoming strategy games, so hopefully this guess isn't too far off base:)
Loki has stated (specifically, during the IRC session they had recently) that they have made deals with 3 separate companies to port 3 titles to the Linux platform: A real-time strategy game, a 3D (I assume first-person shooter) game, and something else. The announcements should come shortly after Civ: CTP ships this week (probably in little over a week).
The holographic robed figure is not Senator Palpatine, who is seen in the trailer talking to the Queen, but is Darth Sidious(sp?), a Sith lord who commands Darth Maul and all-around-evil-guy.
Their metabolic processes should be sufficiently divergent from what evolved on Earth to not prefer digesting or infesting human organic tissue... or so we hope:)
According to widely accepted estimates, the average distance between civilizations in our galaxy would be on the order of 200 light years... radio waves have only been traveling from earth for 50 or so years... so odds are no civilization that can hear our signals has had the chance yet.
"NT's roots extend back to 1977 and Digital Equipment's release of VMS 1.0. Many core members of the future NT design team left Digital in 1988 to join Microsoft, which released NT's first version, Windows NT 3.1, in 1993. Thus, NT and UNIX have been evolving since the mid-1970s..."
Ummm... that's a real leap. Just because some NT design team members also worked on VMS *does not* mean that 1)NT is descended from VMS 2) that NT has been evolving since the 70's. More FUD, sigh
Someone asked about releasing the Q1 engine source last fall... Carmack's reply was something to the effect of "it would be in bad taste to release the source when some licensees have yet to release a product..."
This is easily the best editorial published by Slashdot in recent memory... Rob, get this guy to be a regular contributor... Congratulations Kragen for your logical and well thought out rebuttal.
Like so many others, I started out with a Slackware distribution. I'd happily go back when they move to glibc, as Slackware was consistently a higher quality package than Redhat, Caldera, and many others...

> It seems we just need a better sound API.
Loki is aiding in the development of the OpenAL project (open source 3D sound API)... and there's also the ALSA open source sound driver project...
There will be a Myth 2 patch in the near future that will add full Mesa/OpenGL compatibility.
I would imagine it was because every other id title since Doom had been ported to Linux, so why stop now?

Actually, you can choose to have your playing would be topographically like a globe or doughnut.

heh, self-explanatory...
DOSemu (http://www.dosemu.org) runs old Sierra games very well... I've been playing Quest for Glory 1 again on the .99.x series with no problems...

More FUD for the weak-minds of the world...
Oh great Penguin, grant that these LinuxWorld announcements never end!
