What makes a forum truly open if people get banned for 'excessive bad posting'? I thought we had a moderation system to take care of this.

    These are all valid questions.

  6. How do I raise my Karma? on Small Business Administration Objects to .US Deal · · Score: -1, Offtopic

Post Early: If an article has over a certain number of posts on it already, yours is less likely to be moderated. This is less likely both statistically (there are more to choose from) and due to positioning (as a moderator I have to actually find your post waaay at the end of a long list.)

Post Often: If you only post once a month you can expect your karma to remain low. Also, lively discussion in an open forum is what makes Slashdot really "Rock the Casbah."

With all the quartz goodness in Office X, getting things working anywhere else would be an awful lot of work.

I'm not saying it wouldn't be worth it, though. Office X is so yummy you almost forget it's Microsoft.

  13. Re:MS Office only kinda sorta under Unix on Slashback: Switchover, EULA, Perspectives · · Score: -1

You're aware that the Unix started out as proprietary software, no?

This whole "it's proprietary, therefore not unix" thing is total bullshit. Unix has had a long history, and much of it has been owned by one company or another. One would think that you, the purported unix fanatic, would appreciate someone bringing a unix to the desktop, but you don't. You don't want good software, you want a good license. You just can't judge the technical merits of something based on it's gnu/ethical value.

I've got news for you : RedHat/Mandrake/whoeverthefuck does open source because they'd be crushed otherwise. They don't hold any of your gnu/ideals, they want to make money, the same as Apple.

    This is how business works.

Maybe you should read the trolls, tho. We're reading you.

Raw Unix? Exactly what is that? By your logic, since StarOffice runs in a window manager, it's not running on unix.

But, you've included a delightful selection of links in your post, so you're +5 insightful. I, on the other hand, disagree, and am therefore -1 Flamebait. If we get visited by an especially stupid mod (which is something like an especially stinky fart: even the best are pretty bad), I might be -1 Offtopic. Only time will tell.

  15. Re:MS Office on Berkely Unix? on Slashback: Switchover, EULA, Perspectives · · Score: -1, Informative

Well, you'd have to port the whole damned window server, something Apple is wisely keeping to themselves.

You'd have to have a carbon API, too.

I guess it applies for certain values of 'eazy'.

But why would you need to? Linux guys have StarOffice, don't they? I love when a software's most touted feature is that it can read it's competitor's formats.
