And in terms of "growing" competition, umm yes really big competition. About the most sold Microsoft OS phone was the SPV at 50,000 units. The SonyEricsson P800 (Symbian) sold over 1,000,000 and the companies in control of Symbian are ALL out to keep microsoft away from this market. So in many ways Nokia NOT having overall control will be better for Nokia as it will help keep everyone together.
Microsoft are currently as much of a threat to Nokia's phone market as Nokia are to Microsoft's PDA market.... and right now I think Microsoft have potentially the most reason to worry.
Sorry to pick on you, but it is this sort of comment that pisses me off about techies trying to do design. There are basically two competing schools of design
KISS and WILI.
KISS is Keep it Simple Stupid and works well, this gets you elements that actually work and are clean to their purpose
WILI is Well I Like It and is typified by the "wouldn't it be great if" and "I'd like to see" arguments that come so often from the technical, and graphic design, communities.
Nokia is the worlds number one in designing PHONES, to say these people are clueless is to stand on the mountain of arrogance and start building upwards. So there are a few things that aren't integrated well into the phone, and sure that will improve the point is...
I have Nokia 5510
What ever they did made you buy it. So what if it isn't 100% perfect, if it was would you upgrade in 12 months time ?
What are obvious Good Things in your WILI world wouldn't actually make the product great.
Geeks are rubbish at design, Graphic Designers are normally worse at designing Websites and products. Please lets leave it to the professionals.
Oh wait, both selling patterns are pretty similar. This isn't really news it just means that people have set up automatic sales and these have to be done well in-advance. What will be news is when senior execs sell large amounts of stock automatically as the price DROPS.
If I was a SCO exec I'd be putting my sell price as a drop below 15 or a rise above 25, the drop price is the important one though as it will tell us how confident they are, the lower the drop price the more confident.
That would be interesting, whale sounds, bird calls, waves...
All included in the new "Statistical information reports to relax by", also available as ringtones for your polyphonic mobile phone. Classics such as the "2000 census" , "Tea sales in North Dakota" and the timeless "Distribution of Toaster ownership by educational group", this offer is only available direct and will not be seen in any shops. Only $19.95, P&P extra, add 6% sales tax for residents in CA.
I thought these guys are meant to be terrorists. $250k to give information leading to the arrest of a terrorist ? Not enough, I want $10m which I thought was the standard US terrorist suspect reward.
Its not even a figure Dr Evil would get out of bed for.
and a menagerie of others with whom you will feel great pride in entrusting your IT infrastructure
I think you are missing the point when you jump on this line.
Think about it logically. What groups work on OSS...
People who do it "out of hours" and are good... he talks of these in the first part, then there are the university students
And finally people who work for IBM, Sun, SAP, HP, SGI, Cisco, etc. Who are paid for by their companies to work on open source.... this is the meagerie of people.
And of course right now this exactly the bunch of people who companies do trust in providing not only their IT infrastructure but also the IT infrastructure for the whole planet.
The menagerie are the blue chip companies who build real IT.
And finally he says there are virus writers apparently, although most virus writers seem to use VB, which isn't a big OSS language.. but is pushed my microsoft.
So what he is really saying is that OSS is built by the people who built IT, and viruses are written by VB developers.
The US targets countries that have bad track records wrt human rights
What like China ? Saudi Arabia ? Israel ? Come on do you really believe that, especially given the current administrations lack of belief in human rights. Camp X-Ray being one of the worst examples of human rights being denied that any civilised country has ever seen.
Umm you are kidding that the US has a strong human rights record ? And has not done anything bad on an international scale recently.
Camp X-Ray ? Chile ? Iran-Contra ? Cuba, Bay of Pigs? Panama ? Saddam Hussein ? Grenada ?
Shall I go on ? To say that the US has not commited acts that would result in the condemnation and sanction if commited by a smaller nation is to ignore recent history.
Saddam Hussein was first recruited by the US Goverment to assassinate the democratically elected head of Iraq. The US did deals with Iran to supply arms to terrorists in central america. The US funded a drug running leader of panama until he refused to listen... then invaded the country. In Chile the US backed a coup that overthrew a democratically elected goverment and replaced it with a facist dictator who murdered thousands of his own people.
This is NOT a good record.
And as for why India or Pakistan aren't being invaded... very simple and NOTHING to do with what they do in places like Kashmir, or the funding of terrorism by the Pakistan goverment.
The US doesn't want a war in India because there are far too many people in India, and India has a well equipped army who would inflict massive casulties. This is the same reason China is never going to be a target.
The reason the US gets to act this way is the same reason the UK acted this way in the 19Century...
the US has proven they are RESPONSIBLE with their use of WMD
Umm so the US has never say... knowingly supplied foreign powers with agents that could construct WMDs ? The US has never say.. used WMDs against civilian targets ?
I am not sticking up for Saddam Hussein, but an argument that says "its okay for the military to fund research into biological weapons because they only want the anti-dotes" is just plain rubbish. The US HAS the either the worlds largest, or second largest stockpile of chemical and biological weapons. The US has refused to sign up to a treaty which seeks to limit these weapons. The US has proved far from responsible in providing WMDs or their agents to unstable and agressive regimes which they favour. Where do you think Saddam got the damned stuff from ? Then there is the UK which appears to have tested this stuff on its own citizens (isn't the US accused of this too?).
Iraq does appear to have destroyed all of its WMDs... maybe now the US will turn to the other serial violator of UN sanctions... Israel. The US is not the only hypocrite here, France probably leads the way after building a Nuclear Power Station for Saddam, followed by the UK who nearly supplied him with a Super Gun.
It is NOT bashing the US, it is bashing the logic that says its okay to do research on totally descructive weapons because it could never ever fall into the wrong hands, and the US Army is only looking at it so they can create the anti-dotes.
Its bashing the argument that says you should EVER trust the military to not want bigger and badder weapons.
Have a poor economy at home, need to invade... 9/11. Need a "bogeyman"... 9/11... can't find him well 9/11 another chap.
The US remains the nation that has deployed WMDs against the most civilians. It remains the nation that refused to sign the chemical and biological non-proliferation treaty.
9/11 justifies everything. In the same was as Oklahoma didn't justify cracking down on the far-right.
Oh.. so by that "logic" Saddam Hussein was COMPLETELY and utterly correct in undertaking biological research as he didn't want to get caught with his pants down if someone else invented it.
Or is it that if the US does it this means it is "good" research, but if someone else does it then it is "bad" research.
Hiring smart guys is what you want. You want a team of smart guys who them compete against each other....
And you look miles better while doing less work as the smart guys are competing to do your work as well. Then you can focus on the more important things like golf and sailing.
Has become the new "Star Wars" angle for research. Looking for new Funding ? Unsure that it will get approved ? Well see how it could possibly be applied to WMD, it doesn't have to be sensible, it just has to be enough to get the funding. After all there are people of billions of dollars out there who can't find WMD, so your research not doing it either won't change anything.
This is for the diagnosis of illnesses, pure and simple. And at 2am in a bar when the funding review was at 10am the researchers had an idea.
I mean look at Java trying with its "Virtual Machine", it can't do half the things that Outlook can. SURE it can read emails if you write some code, but can those emails infect the machine with a virus and bring down your database servers, email all of your contacts and format your hard-drive.
Outlook is the ULTIMATE application, it is a VIRTUAL OPERATING SYSTEM which is AUTOMATICALLY logged in as the administrator.
What more could you possibly want...
Except threading... And a SPAM filter... And not going back to the server to check if emails have changed.
Oh and ideally I'd like it not to hang for 30 seconds just because it can't contact the server while I'm reading or writing an email.
Now excuse me if I disagree here, but these appear to be a combination of technical people with decent business people working towards a real solution or product. Technologists don't have to be "geeks", most are not. I'd say that the.com was more a result of geeks than most sectors of the market as it was totally ungrounded in business.
Steve Jobs & Bill Gates are not geeks, and its THOSE sort of people, and people like Metcalf @ 3COM, and the founders of the other successful IT businesses that Silicon Valley is founded on. Its people who combine strong technical skills, with an even stronger view on how to make markets.
Chirac is a LIBERAL... bloody hell this is going to come as ONE hell of a shock to the French who thought he was the right wing leader. Arafat is a liberal ? Again lets see...
Thinks Killing people is a "Good Idea"(tm) Believes in using retoric and emotive language
Hardly sounds liberal to me. Yes these organisations also dish out food aid etc but lets not pretend that isn't for their own ends.
Oh hang on I've just understood...
You have no idea what you are talking about, you know nothing of French politics, very little about politics in the middle east.
Chirac is a conservative, Arnie is a "big name" conservative.
Maybe just maybe Bush is the biggest weasel because he has a history of failed businesses, bending the truth, objecting to fair and just process and while talking about a morale crusade is dishing out cash to his friends.

What does it mean? are IBM worried about losing ?
Oh wait, both selling patterns are pretty similar. This isn't really news it just means that people have set up automatic sales and these have to be done well in-advance. What will be news is when senior execs sell large amounts of stock automatically as the price DROPS.

They've given up on that name...
Now they are going for
"Investigation Time for America"
Actually what it teaches us is
- Criminals don't wear stripes and sound like Cagney
- For any scam the best approach is to target the largest user group... more people means more idiots
- The FBI staff use personal email
This is exactly what you should expect, the FBI aren't a mixed race of mutant beings, and large crimes can be commited by pretty much anyone.
I don't think anyone claimed Iraq was a civilised country.
But the US only tested it on its troops so that must be okay then.
So by this argument the world was a "safe" place in 1910 because the UK was all dominant in its position of power.
History tells us otherwise.
Umm you are kidding that the US has a strong human rights record ? And has not done anything bad on an international scale recently.

Sorry it had to be done.

Its actually all my fault...
I left this script running on the unix farm which did the following on each box
while(true)
rm filename
echo "Whose the Daddy" > filename
end while
Its a big farm, and its been running all year. The net result is about 100k of files on the farm total... but terrabytes during the year.
In otherwords what I mean is...
How much of this "created" information was transient.
Is there a chapter on hair length, beard trimming and pizza ?
Newsgroup threading and proper email threading (id and reference driven) is NOT available in Outlook 2003, not in the way as it is in even Emacs.
And in terms of Outlook not going back to the server... try the following using Outlook/Exchange via the "standard" Microsoft connections.
Synch your emails so everything is now client side for reading... Don't shutdown outlook... disconnect from the network...
And explain why you can't read your emails...
I mean look at Java trying with its "Virtual Machine", it can't do half the things that Outlook can. SURE it can read emails if you write some code, but can those emails infect the machine with a virus and bring down your database servers, email all of your contacts and format your hard-drive.
