  1. No they didn't on Geoengineering To Cool the Earth Becoming Thinkable · · Score: 5, Informative

This is a complete myth. Read this and be enlightened - http://www.realclimate.org/index.php?p=94

  2. Wrong on Internet Co-inventor Vint Cerf Endorses Obama · · Score: 1

It is simply not correct to say that a candidate's position on abortion does not affect/change things in an 8 year period. One of the first things that Bush did when he got in was to withdraw or limit funding to NGO's that provided planned parenting services. Ask Marie Stopes. This policy has proved devastating to many countries in Africa.

  3. Re:It's Certainly a Strange Coping Mechanism on 'Super Steel' Sought For Fusion Reactors · · Score: 1

Some Americans have a near psychotic desire to be a part of bringing justice to those responsible

Yes indeedy. The rest of the world were delighted to see how invading Iraq helped push that along.

  4. Assuming you're legit... on Big Six UK ISPs Capitulate To Music Industry · · Score: 1

...and I have no reason to assume you're not, you should write a 1000 word piece explaining your thoughts and reasoning and ping it to the Times, Guardian, Indy, Fin & Telegraph. Get it signed off by Dizzee and his management. I'm an ex lawyer and I'd be more than happy to help you draft & craft this. You can reach me by emailing my username (strip the spaces) at gmail.

  5. Re:Singularity is naive on Douglas Hofstadter Looks At the Future · · Score: 1

You're arguing that the human brain in it's current form cannot be further optimised. I don't buy this at all - there's no reason to think that the current model is the best possible model for "understanding". If we can built a machine that understands at the level we do (and you say you think that this is possible) there's no reason to think that we won't be able to improve on that design.

  6. Web 2.0 (Ob Bash) on Encyclopedia Britannica to Take User Contributions · · Score: 1

No no no! They're just embracing Web 2.0.

  7. Re:Unencrypted? on Bank of NY Loses Tapes With 4.5 Million Clients' Data · · Score: 1

Few easy ways to do this. 1) if the receiving organistaion is Safe Harbor (and has decent data security) then you're good. 2) put the EC Model Contracts (google them) in place between your respective organistations.3) if the shipment is internal, use Binding Corporate Rules (again, Google these).

  8. Re:It was amazing to a twelve year old on Bill Gates: Windows 95 Was 'A High Point' · · Score: 1

Things like Encarta were just boondoggling

If you actually meant "mindboggling", it was a great slip!
  9. Toilet paper on New Urinal-Based Video Game Makes a Splash · · Score: 1

So clean up after yourself with a wad of toilet paper FFS. It's not difficult, it's your own piss, and it's good manners.

  10. Re:Dupe damn you! on Software to Randomize Police Operations at LAX · · Score: 1

A nice big shiny lump of Pyrite!

  11. Re:I ran into this with my roommate yesterday on Correcting Misperceptions About Evolution · · Score: 1

  12. This ain't no Troll on UK Commissioner Seeks To Ban Ultrasonic Anti-Teen Device · · Score: 1

The parent's not trolling - "uncool" music is indeed used to deter antisocial behaviour by young people. the effect is well known http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/magazine/4154711.stm. Classical music is played in certain London Underground stations in part for this reason. http://entertainment.timesonline.co.uk/tol/arts_and_entertainment/music/article3284419.ece

  13. It was ever thus on Rush Limbaugh Begs Steve Jobs For Bug Fixes · · Score: 1

Granted I've not been around forever, but IMHO this has been the case as long as I've been here. I have wondered whether the fact that right-wing views are so frequently and strongly expressed reflects a US/non-US split in /.'s user-base with US contributors (the bulk of users) being on the whole more right-wing than their European counterparts (the "significant minority" of ./ users).

  14. Ron Paul on Dodd's Filibuster Threat Stalls Wiretap Bill · · Score: 1

I sincerely wish that /.'s Ron Paul cheerleading squad would look a little deeper into his voting record and stance on issues.

  15. Fail. on The Future of Love and Sex - Robots · · Score: 1

You can't be doing it right. :-p

  16. Urination and Rugby on Online Sex Offender Database Leads To Murder? · · Score: 1

I'm a Kiwi and, for better or worse, Rugby is our religion. Your story reminded me of an incident during a Tri-Nations match between NZ and Australia when Jerry Collins, blind-side flanker, one of the hardest men in the game, needed a piss and the game was about to kick-off. So what did he do? He walked to the sideline, knelt down, and pissed into a bucket. This was all shown live on television. No idiot cops bothered to arrest him thankfully...

  17. It's Marissa on The 110 Million Dollar Button · · Score: 1

Her name's spelled Marissa, not Marisa.

  18. Vengence on Cannabis Compound Said To "Halt Cancer" · · Score: 1

And the really fucked up thing is that you're taking your revenge against the *entirely* the wrong people. Iraq had absolutely nothing to do with 911.

  19. Dupe on Crater From 1908 Tunguska Blast Found · · Score: -1, Redundant

  21. Re:Sounds like techies aren't getting enough sleep on Half of IT Workers Sleep on the Job · · Score: 1

I really have trouble falling asleep at night, but once I'm asleep, I can stay asleep just fine
I had this problem for years and years. For what it's worth, I found that doing exercise at lunch (not in the evening, I found it just charged me up) and yoga/meditation in the evening sorted me out.
  22. Nit pick on Retailer Refuses Hardware Repair Due To Linux · · Score: 1

we have a loser pays legal system

Actually we don't. Costs are discretionary - it's entirely up to the Judge as to whether they're awarded and to which party they're awarded.

  23. No, it's not on Judge Says, Record DNA of Everyone In the UK · · Score: 1

"visitors' DNA" is a pie-in-the-sky idea that is rightly being shot down in flames and is extremely unlikely to ever eventuate. Fingerprinting at US Customs is something that actually happens. It is worse when it happens.

  24. Credit where it's due! on Science Blogger Sued for Unfavorable Book Review · · Score: 1

Yeah, it's a great description, but I like this (earlier) one better... http://ask.slashdot.org/comments.pl?sid=235365&cid =19194117

  25. Legality on Open Source — Selling Software That Sells Itself · · Score: 1

It's arguable that linking directly to the print version is considered "deep-linking" and may therefore be subject to legal challenge.
