I guess you missed the dreaded Vendor Lock in of Compaq, and IBM that required you to buy both Power Supply and Memory from them only. Not a very new concept. Would you resolve to stop buying from them as well?

Actually Apple has put pressure on the record companies to keep it as low as $.99 The record companies want to change the paradigm to charge MORE for popular music and less for less popular stuff. By keeping it at $.99 Apple actually subsidizes the artists that would otherwise be getting even less.

And yet people with degrees tend to have much more trouble being flexible. I've been a computer professional for over 30 years now and I never got a degree. I also never had a problem learning a new language or environment. I have had to re-educate nearly every person with a degree I've worked with on how to be flexible when it comes to picking the tools for the job. People with degrees tend to pick what they know. What they know was a very specific environment taught in school and just couldn't seem to get outside the paradigm. Self educated people seem far more willing and able to pick up a new tool and figure out if it will meet their criteria. Now I've had all this experience that directly contradicts your position. On the other hand I've also seen the grads of the tech schools be much more rigid, so that much I agree with. If you want a superior programmer/engineer pick the one without the degree, he has no investment in rigid environments. He's much more likely to learn a new system fast and be able to cope with changing requirements.
