But what happens when I'm in Michigan and need to call a client in California? It's still relevant that 9 am here is 6 am there. If you eliminate time zones, you'll still have to adjust your schedule based on the fact that their day is about 3 hours behind yours.
We already use a global time in a sense; time zones make GMT into a format that's easier to understand. Knowing that it's 05:00 GMT doesn't necessarily tell you whether you're going to be calling a person in the middle of the night or not.
I swear, I'm going to be very sad if some day high end servers, etc are all running x86 boxes running Linux.
I huge Sun Enterprise server is so much cooler than a bunch of cheap-ass boxes running Linux.
I don't consider myself to be just the 'average user', yet I find attractive fonts to be VERY important. It's one of my biggest peeves with my Sparc/Solaris boxes. I really do think some nice fonts would REALLY clean up the unix/linux interfaces in general.
I can't decide whether this is really ambitious, or you're just stupid?
You're talking about running a real radio station, right? Not just an internet radio station. Unless you've got a whole lot of money to invest in all the equipment, fees and royalties, don't even think about it.
And what does your "mandrake box" have to do with this? I think Linux is the least of your concerns.
It's quite amusing how much you guys get your panties in a bunch of this kind of stuff.
But don't get me wrong - I AGREE WITH YOU. This news probably means the end of humanity as we know it. Hell, probably the universe.
This is why everybody should be using Linux, or another varient of open source software. Obviously Microsoft has no concept of security, and shouldn't be used in really any circumstance.
I run my business on complete linux boxes, and nobody has any trouble using them. The interfaces are consistant, and well thought out, and we've developed an efficient system to upgrade and patch about 20 or so workstations whenever new versions come out. There haven't been any major issues of the company learning UNIX either. It's amazing to watch the 40 year old women in accounting hack away at VI!;-)
When these boxes had win2k on them, it was not uncommon for them to crash upwards of 2-3 times per day.
Will you guys just STFU already!? Seriously. For people who dislike Microsoft so much, it seems to be all you can talk about. Granted, they have done some somewhat shady things, but for fuck's sake, what corporation hasn't? There are much worse companies that have caused death, injury or MUCH worse. Microsoft writes software.
It seems like a majority of the stories on this site are either how evil corporations are, or how the man is out to get you.
Get over Linux already. It's a fucking operating system, not a way of life.
Perhaps if you had some un-biased reporting around here, things would be different. Microsoft does a lot of good things, but I don't recall EVER seeing them mentioned here. Not that it matters to me, but it seems that every time you can find some nit-picky shit about how "M$" has given somebody a displeasing look, it becomes a news story.
So guys...Get up, get out of the house, and go join your friends if you have any. They're probably already in line for Star Wars.
If you think you CAN'T, then you're horribly misinformed.
There are plenty of programs out there which can assist in disabling most of the potentially dangerous functions of Windows, and they work quite well.
Most high schoolers don't know that much about computers - they know how to download MP3s, chat and install warez, but that doesn't make them more knowledgable than a network admin. Unless of course the network admin is like the ones at my old high school...ugh.
What's the problem here? If a school district owes Microsoft money, then they owe them money. If they don't, then they have nothing to worry about.
Maybe I'm missing something, but I don't see this as a story. Struggling for your daily "M$ IS EVIL" quota, perhaps?
I don't want to come off as totally pro-Microsoft, but this is getting ridiculous. So I'm gonna waste some more Karma (hah, like I have any left to waste!)
REMEMBER GUYS - EVERYBODY AT MICROSOFT WANTS TO KILL YOUR DOG AND RAPE YOUR WIFE! THEY'RE THE "EVIL EMPIRE" AND THEY HATE YOU.
I heard that somebody at Microsoft gave somebody a displeasing look! OMG! TIME FOR A SLASHDOT POST!
Guys, relax. This isn't the end of the world. How about you go outside and enjoy the weather instead of developing conspiracy theories about how Microsoft is going to ruin your life today.
Okay, I'd like to make several points about the comments in response to this topic.
Where do you guys get the idea that Microsoft is full of inept and lazy programmers? That just doesn't make any sense. I, for one, have talked to several Microsoft employees that have come out to my university (Michigan State) for presentations, and they all say the same thing: People who work there have a genuine passion to make good software. If you don't have the drive and motivation, you won't succeed. I mean honestly, I'm certain there are many great open source programmers, BUT, they've got to earn a living some how. If you are very talented, I'm sure a large corporation like Microsoft would pay you VERY well for your skills. I'm sure they have a lot of applicants, and as a result only hire the best. It would only make sense.
Last year the lead developer of the C++ compiler team made quite the lengthy presentation in a nearby hotel auditorium. I don't know compilers that well (I'm EE, not CS), but I'll tell you this much...that man is a genious. He really knew his stuff, and it was evident by the reactions of the CS professors in attendance. He, as many of the Microsoft employees have stated, seemed to really like his job.
...He wasn't some bumbling code-stealing idiot that you guys would make him out to be.
I don't know what's worse. The fact that you guys can nitpick so much, or the fact that I take the time to read it.
You do realize that if linux apps were as mainstream and easy to use as Microsoft products, they'd be exploited just as much, right?
Oh wait, I forgot. Those programmers who make 6 figures at Microsoft are just script kiddies who can't code. I'm sure the typical open source programmer could blow any of them away. I'm sure...
You forgot about all of the costs relating to producing a chip. A huge markup like that is very reasonable, even if you just consider the R&D hours it took to develop. Not to mention the rest of the business overhead...
I work for an engineering company, and used to be shocked at the items we sold for upwards of $30,000. Then I realized how many engineers and how many months it took to develop. $30,000 almost seemed like a bargain.
I'd say Windows 2000/XP give you signficantly more control than Windows 98 did. It's just a matter of figuring out how to do stuff.
And don't get me wrong, I run an OpenBSD server on a Sun Sparc 20, a FreeBSD game server on a Dual Pentium Pro and Solaris 8 on an Ultra 30. I like UNIX and UNIX-like OS's, but it's merely a time waster for a desktop machine. Even the latest versions of KDE and Gnome are still behind Windows 3.1 in a lot of ways.
It's amazing that no matter what the story, you guys still find a way to bash Microsoft.
Get over it. It's a business. We live in a country with a capitalist economy. Microsoft is out to make a profit, not save the world. They make a good product. Some of you may claim otherwise, but when I have something I really need to get done, Windows is the only solution. If I want to waste an afternoon trying to get something to work, I'll fire up one of my Linux boxes. It may be fun, but it isn't practical.
Hell, I'll bet Microsoft could give each and every one of you a free copy of Windows, Office XP and.NET, and you'd still find a way to bitch.
Just because you run Linux as your primary desktop OS doesn't make you superior to every other computer user.
This saddens me greatly if Oracle is dumping Sun, that would really hurt them. Server rooms will eventually be much less impressive if Sun goes out of business and they are replaced with racks of cheesy intel hardware. There is so much GOOD about Sun I wouldn't know where to begin.
It angers me to see the Slashdot comment collective wacking-off, thinking they've won some huge victory. Linux isn't that spectacular...and as far as I can tell it's not business oriented at all. Solaris is so far superior to Linux for so many reasons. Linux is a bunch of guys writing crap on their own time, and proud when it only take 45 hours to get their soundcard working! Hey look! I got X windows to run on my 1 GHz box and the mouse cursor almost isn't jumpy!
In addition, suddenly Sun is the "enemy". From personal experience, I know Sun deals a LOT with open source, and they release a LOT of their software for free (especially for small-scale users). I think that if you're a big, successful company you're branded as EVIL, no matter what.
But what happens when I'm in Michigan and need to call a client in California? It's still relevant that 9 am here is 6 am there. If you eliminate time zones, you'll still have to adjust your schedule based on the fact that their day is about 3 hours behind yours.

You think anybody cares that you'll be moving out of the country?
Hell, if most of slashdot's US members moved out of the country, we'd all be better off.
Give me a break, guys.
NetBSD is pure crap. Ever tried running it on a Sparc box? You'll be lucky if you have a 1 day uptime.
AHAHAHAHAHHAHAHAHHAHAHAHAHAHAHHAHAHHAHAHAAH
Wait, no that joke might have been funny 3,405 times ago...Why didn't you thrown in a BSOD jab too!?
Doesn't anybody get tired of these endless I HOPE IT DOESN'T RUN M$ SOFTWARE!!! HAHAHAHAH!!!
You should have added a BSOD joke for bonus hilarity!

This is probably the most reasonable post I've ever seen on Slashdot.
That's why I'm not suprised it's not getting modded up.
