..that can't find a way to get interested in the latest permuation of the FPS? I'm sure this will be an unpopular post here at Slashdot but here goes anyway..
I enjoyed playing Doom(/2), Duke3d & Quake(/2) when i was in highschool but since then there seems to be an infinity of FPS games that are only a slight variation on each other.
The latest drawing/physics engines may be amazing when compared to the grand daddies like Wolfenstein and Doom but it seems to me there is a real lack of innovation in the FPS genre - with game development companies content to just slap some new maps and a few cheezy video interludes on the latest gaming engine and release a new game.
Seriously, how many different ways can there be to walk around a 2D map from a first person perspective viewpoint and shoot things?
Is it good for gaming that a single genre is so dominant?
Am i missing the point? Probably.
I feel like a relic, missing the Amiga/Atari gaming days.. and worse, increasing find myself turning to Nintendo for my gaming needs!
" Microsoft didn't just dream this up overnight..."
Like most/all of Microsoft's "innovations",.NET was *purchased*, not created, by Microsoft.
Microsoft inherited what become.NET when they
purchased Colusa Software on on March 12, 1996.
At this time C/C++ and VB environments already existed for Colusa's "OmniVM" (which became the.NET CLR?).
To clarify - I do alot of work with C# and find it to be the least unpleasant Microsoft development environment I have experienced.
I'm having exactly the same problem - itunes crashes on adding a folder.
It seems to be different files each time.
My audio files are shared over a lan using samba on linux.
Does anyone have any suggestions?
After becoming really interesting in Quartz Extreme I have been wondering why there are no efforts to write a hardware-excelerated OpenGL X server or an OpenGL based display system with an optional X server.
Hardware rendered desktops like are the obvious way of the future....
I've thought about starting such a project myself, i've been reading up on OpenGL and X but i really don't know where to start.
I'd love to get involved with something like this.
Are polygraphs used anywhere besides the united states?
Here in Australia, to my knowledge, the courts don't consider polygraphs to have any credibility and the general attitude is that their use by american authorities is a little bizarre.

I have to throw in my 2c..
I am no gun lover but common sense and the facts dictate crime rates reflect violent societies not gun ownership levels.
Look at crime rates and gun ownership rates in Switzerland and Norway (about 30% gun ownership) and Finland (about 25% gun ownership).
Every nonsensical statement Bill Gates makes regarding the GLP is an indication of how scared Microsoft are of open development and licences that don't allow them to use others' code without acknowledgement.
Exactly!
I couldn't care less about WMP or $X hundred million fines.
The public interest would best be served by Microsoft being *forced* to -
a) Use open standards.
OR
b) Submit all Microsoft created data formats to the appropriate standards authorities.
Then we would all be free to inter-operate *AND* Microsoft is free to innovate (ha!).
Is anyone else using their XBOX as a table for sitting their GC on?

MDI is a UI abomination

I've been looking for a bootable CD that will load a GUI with a recent (~1.4) JVM on x86 hardware fast, for demoing java software.
Could i use knoppix for this?
Does anyone know of anything else that fits the bill?
Swingers..
Donnie Darko..
American Psycho..
When was the last time an innovative, imaginative new game was released?
I think the golden years of gaming are long gone.

Duh, the difference isn't "Linux is good and Windows is evil" - the difference is "Linux 2.5.62 with KDE 3.0" is free software.

With respect, this is not the point.
Benjamin Franklin's (often incorrectly attributed to Thomas Jefferson) statement is eerily appropriate for the current situation:
"They that can give up essential liberty to obtain a little temporary safety deserve neither liberty nor safety. "
- Benjamin Franklin, 1773
