Unless the refrigerant is flowing around the electric motor, which I doubt, there is still a shaft seal inside the sealed unit. Also this seems pretty silly since you're now converting mechanical energy into electricity in the alternator or whatever your prius has, then converting it back into mechanical energy to drive the compressor. Granted that allows the AC to work even when the engine isn't running but it does decrease the overall efficiency of the AC system. Maybe that loss is made up for in the whole hybrid system...

Let's not forget this is the local yocal salt lake city paper promoting a couple of local yocal kids, not a serious technical journal with serious technical data to back up their claims.

Ok first of all, Forrest Mimms rules. He wrote those little "Engineer's Mini Notebooks" you used to be able to get at Radio Shack (maybe you still can, I'm not sure), they're small, easy to understand, chock full of GREAT electronics projects, and best of all cheap. Also his amazing book Getting Started in Electronics is probably the best introduction to electronics ever. You can find his stuff on his web site at http://www.forrestmims.com/

Second of all get your ham radio license! Buy a copy of Now You're Talking! from the ARRL and study up! Amateur radio is approximately 50% applied analog and digital electronics, and don't think all that communications theory stuff doesn't apply to computers because it does, RF knowledge is CRITICAL to engineering high speed digital circuits! Get involved with a local ham radio club and start building ham radio kits and projects. Other than working in an electronics lab, it's the best way to get applied electronics experience quickly.

I'm not sure about that. It seems highly probably that the eddy currents induced in the drive platters by the EMP would be more than sufficient to scramble the bits. The fact that it's enclosed in a metal box will probably provide some shielding, though not complete protection. Floppy disks would seem more vulnerable but then again they use a plastic disc, with only a very thin magnetic coating, so who knows? The magnetic coating is probably still vulnerable. I wonder how conductive it is? I'll have to check on that when I get home :)

Don't forget the Xerox PARC Alto before ALL of those. Alto was highly document-centric.

Integrated applications -- This industry buzzword has been used to describe many things; here it means that text, graphics, tables, and mathematical formulae are all edited inside documents. In many other systems, different types of content are edited in separate application windows and then cut/pasted together. For example: a MacDraw drawing put into a Microsoft Word or Aldus PageMaker document can no longer be edited; rather, the original must be re-edited with MacDraw and then substituted for the old drawing in the document.

Not even Star is fully integrated in the sense used here. For example, though the original structured graphics editor, the new one (see History of Star Development, below), and the table and formula editors all operate inside text files, spreadsheets and freehand drawings are currently edited in separate application windows and transferred into documents, where they are no longer fully editable.
