they should just use platinum. that way they'll rip us off even more.... but we could sell our computers to make jewelery.... oh wait, why would any one on slashdot need jewelery?
actually hurd is out and is very nice. however it's not exactly usable for most people yet. i wanted to start contributing, but, that plan was foiled when i saw the lack of up to date documentation and realized i have no spare time.
if it's a dupe, it's a dupe. you can't have moderators who are idiots saying, "well, it's almost not a dupe" and then mod up to 1 "interesting", or 1 "funny", or 5 "it's not really a dupe".
and then software companies will be no longer. a software company is not going to want to put in all the time, effort and money to providing software that works, works right, and has NO bugs. all of that cannot be done, and them still make a profit. otherwise, it would be done to some degree right now.
plus, what happens in the case of bugs from other software are the cause of this software. are they going to get sued because they rely on this library but, that library is defective??
actually, i think that's a much better idea than what was previously thought. having access to "home directory" files in that way is very cool. however i'm not sure i'd want to trust my PERSONAL files to a file system that doesn't have significant years under it's belt. i mean, ntfs is a pretty solid file system. winfs.... well we'll see.
the idea of basing this on sql is cool, but it seems a little bit overkill. i can see if you'd like to go and find a file using the find file command. but for normal usage, it seems as though the traditional approach is more than adequate. but i'm not a file system expert by any means. someone please explain.
i've seen a 1 Ghz with 256 MB ram running WinXP, basically come crawling to a halt (after a clean install), just by opening up internet explorer. If a tablet PC is running XP, this will start to be a problem. though, get more ram, and you're fine.
...or even better, the excellent Dasher [cam.ac.uk] application.
Dasher is a great project, with alot of interesting ideas.... however i'm not sure how long my brain could last before i started shaking and have a seizure (sp??)
would you trust your research to a pencil? i wouldn't. i'd have to write it in pen when i got home, so that when the pencil fades (like my physics notes from 3 years ago), i'd still have the pen copy.
you're point is well taken, after realizing that you mean 1 of those items listed. there are people in the world (myself not included) who like pocketPC, want a cell phone with a pda to save space (it really does save space....) and want to be able to take notes by taking pictures, rather than trying to take notes with a stylus. that's the only reason i can see the need for a camera with that resolution and storage, other than just to have.
1) develop an easy way to remove internet explorer from windows systems.
2) put posters, give out stickers, and otherwise EXTREME promote Mozilla, and mention the words "Free, Better, Reliable, Secure, FAST! and EASY!"
in all said promotion.
3) Provide Anti-IE/ Pro Mozilla: Uninstall/ Install fests, like the windows/linux install fests of yor.
4) Kick microsoft in the ass when Mozilla has the market share.
Benefits: for one, people will be getting a more reliable browser. Microsoft will rethink their browser war strategy and fix the damn bugs and possibly conform to standards.
with a better operating system running on these, you'd have to wonder would a cluster of zauruses be able to do better? or is the limit of pda style clustering what we've seen here. (at least with the available computing power right now)
steal this movie has nothing to do with 'steal this book' other than the mention of it in the movie. steal this book is a great book, though most of the information found in it is quite dated and of no use anymore other than analysis of the yippie movement in the 60s-70s. some information is still relevant and will work. for instance, the postage stamps. i've sent three (non important) letters to my friend in california using his address as the return address and the to address as mine, and forgetting (i'm so stupid) to place a stamp in the corner.
when can you use cell phones in hospitals?? EVERY hospital i've been in in the last 5 years has signs at every entrance saying, "Cellular phones may interfere with life saving equipment. TURN THEM OFF"
though, using distcc with a cluster of about 16 nodes, you should be able to cut that down to an hour. of course, not many people have 2 free computers at home, let alone 16.

perhaps i should have quoted.. but what's getting old, is the joke presented in the parent. sorry for the confusion.
ok, just like most other jokes on slashdot, this is just getting old, and redundant.

what are you saying that microsoft's ideas aren't original?

but, it comes preloaded on the drive when you buy the drive only. perhaps you misunderstood. anyway, i have to do the same thing with the ms crap...

it may habe been nice to provide the correct link. http://www.freedesktop.org
it's been this way for ages. the only question is, "how will they place in the top 3-5?"
unfortunatly, i have url displayed such that i can see the domain of the url linked. i'm sure many others due too. good try. :)

but, a phone cord? why the hell would you have a phone cord on the syringe.
i think it's supposed to represent the slashdot effect. phone line being bandwidth. syringe being slashdot.
