i'd have to say i agree with you. i just switched back to gentoo, and am ready to go back to slack or debian. i love portage, but i hate compiling things when it really isn't needed. also, i like to complain about how the USE flags tend to not work right on occassion but, i won't here.

vendor support, and vendor fear of losing microsoft. face it. when dell starting shipping linux, microsoft basically said, "we can cut your licenses if we want, you'd be advised to stop bundling linux." this takes away from more vendors supporting linux and thus less user base than windows. if more vendors were supporting linux and not being afraid of those people in redmond, linux would be a viable platform for desktop use for general folks.

    a) is low power and can be left on 24/7 without doubling my electric bill.
    b) provides a more customizable gateway and firewall, than my current linksys router and iptables setup.
    c) provide a lot less noise in my living room by not having to keep my computer on all the time.
    d) store everything on one computer, rather than having to sftp/scp stuff all the time between my laptop/desktop and my other desktop.

since my desktop system, is loud and uses a 300 watt power supply, it cannot be left on all the time, unless i :
    a) rebuild it with a smaller power supply (but eve n still i'm going to need much more than 60 watts (whereas the mini-itx i can get away with 60watts .. or less)
    b) kinda with a. convince my girlfriend that it makes sense to waste more power than is necessary.
    c) buy a new case and eliminate noise via noise reduction techniques.

all in all, it seems as though, the little server would be the best for all of this.

no, the Internet is a bunch of autonomous networks, connected together through the use of routers. to simulate it, you would have to connect a bunch of little networks (mock autonomous systems, which are internally routed using RIP or some other internal network routing protocol) with each other in which traffic is routed to the mock AS's by something like BGP or another protocol.

    or something like that...

  25. Re:I'll do it for 1 million on UCB, USC To Build (And Hack) A Model Internet · · Score: 1

All in one building? Right, cuz that's how the internet is.

the only real problem with it _NOT_ being in one building is simulating different propagation times, data rates, latency, etc... . However, (i'm just guessing here) the connections between autonomous systems on the internet must be pretty damn fast, because most of the "speed" problems at home for me deal with _MY_ connection to my isp. Temple University being it's own autonomous system, most of the problems here, deal with the internal network, not the connection to the rest of the Internet.

So, I really don't see why this couldn't be simulated in one building. Please correct me if I'm missing something.
