Hey, I know my freaks - heck, I used to eat lunch with Mark McCutcheon at Newbridge back in 1994. He's such a freak, that he's even been banned from reference on Wikipedia! He used to buy the $5.00 lunch which included the special of the day and a can of Coke. Then we'd shoot the shit about ideas... I just never thought he'd write about them...
Anyway, I still think that anything Bob Lazar says has to be re-examined a few times...
Sticking to walls is no problem - claws, shag carpets - you get the picture.
I just don't see Bigfoot building a lot of high-tech without serious amounts of shaving and NEET. Clean rooms are hard enough with we shaved apes, but something as furry as...
But yeah, Bob's one for the books. As for being a physicist, he's no more a physicist than any of us who live in the physical world. Oh well...
That, or it's a plan for Art Bell to get Bob Lazar and the ever-intelligent and Angstrom award holder Richard C. Hoagland to come up with some hypergeometry and Mr. Wizard kit to build a flying saucer to solve the mystery behind why Bigfoot is covering up the paranormal research.
Bob Lazar is a UFO freak who is just looking for more attention to back up his claims that the government is keeping his "past" quiet... Sigh... Wired should do more homework and remind people that he's a nutter. But I guess that opinion isn't very popular.
Sigh...

My favourite as of late is applying to security-minded companies, and embedding an image in my email from a server that I have access to. I can watch it as my cover-letter is passed from one department to another. I get to see what systems they are using, and I've found that a lot of companies have their IT department running one version of OS with a Google browser, while HR runs another version of OS (usually XP), and internal managers or reviewers running yet again another OS...
Sillies. You want security, don't claim to be a security firm and yet allow people to view your internal operations... Sillies...

Exactly - it might not be the popular answer, but you are there to work. It sucks, but it is somebody else's money that's going into your pockets or bank account or whatever. It's their
machines, their network, their time, their money.
You're just a very expensive body which if they could figure out a way to replace you, they wod.
Mind you, I've seen this go in bad directions - I worked for one company that was so closed minded that it hurt productivity because they refused to even examine the acquisition of new versions of tools.
But P2P stuff? I don't see any reason for needing this on your desktop at all at work. Considering the last thing you need are the RIAA or MPAA cops or even your national police force coming in with a warrant for your arrest. That kind of negative PR can really mess up a company.
If you really have a great desire to get your hands on the N'Sync single, wait until you get home, or borrow it from one of your friends. Sheesh.
I went to CNN's site and they didn't mention it so it must not be true...;)
Seriously though - holy shoot! It looks like they can really make your day (and rest of your olife) pretty miserable if this thing passes! So what can you do about this? I mean really? If you rise up against the government, they might think you're a terrorist or something. If you sit back and do nothing, then it goes through.
If you wait to vote, the next guy in might like the situation that the previous people put in and not change it at all...
Well, I just hope that they can get stopped, informed of what the whole Open Source effort and GPL are about, and they won't continue doing such things any more.
I'm just surprised that more places haven't done this before, and that people may be surprised that any have... It's a great set of resources - it must be darn tempting...
The point is, that I just want to insert the CD, no kernel rebuilds, and I'm up and running. I've been presented with some interesting options involving FreeBSD, and a few other Linux distros...
Most people seem to install only on desktops, but a distro that supports laptops and desktops in one go without immediate kernel build would be perfect.
What about a default distro laptop install with a wireless NIC and WITHOUT rebuilding a kernel? Although I agree that a lot of distros do well with desktops out of the box, I haven't found one that will do a nice install on my laptop (which I'm hoping to ditch this win2k install).
When I can do that nicely, then I'll agree that Linux is ready for the desktop...
Is if there was a distro that I could just slip into my laptop's CD, boot up, install, and recognize my wireless NIC, allow me to connect, and be surfing and using stuff within an hour. No kernel rebuilds. Just a simple install...
As part of the Bush administration's programme to shut down all cloning research, they will begin to use footage from Pet Cemetary to demonstrate that ressurrected creatures are inherently evil. They're still having problems finding footage of evil sheep (whatever happened to Dolly), but have more than enough examples from science fiction of other creatures, including humans.
It's a shame that the US government is perverting the truth as we all know that clones aren't evil, just soulless empty husks.;)
There is unfortunately that 'x years experience' clause that a lot of employers look for. I used to hit that when I first graduated. Now that I too am out of the workforce, I've had to pick up new skills, but when I apply for a job I get the same old question.
Never mind that I've been coding in the workplace for 9 years, just focus on the unimportant fact that I've only learned Java and Perl on my own and applied this knowledge to my home projects...
A friend of mine got his hands on the remote controller for garage doors from Canadian Tire. Every year, Canadian Tire would run sales on these products. One thing that the packaging stated was that a user could input a "secret" code for their own garage door. This consisted of 4 dip switches....
Well, a soldering iron, a simple circuit board, some coffe, and some time later, voila we had our magic door sweeper. We could drive down the streets of our hick town and open people's garage doors. What a hoot.
I've been doing automated testing for 9 years, and in every job, TCL has been the primary choice. Why TCL? First off, we could write extensions to proprietary protocols easily enough (back in 1994), easy console control via Expect, and the OO extensions are great! It was easy to code in, easy to teach, and incredibly easy to read other people's code.
Most telecom communications test gear APIs come with TCL libraries. And nowhere else have I ever seen the merging of GPIB interfaces, TK GUI, distributed computing, console communications, and MATLAB all in one script!
And unlike Perl, it doesn't look like a bunch of cartoon characters swearing at each other.
People with broadband connections would be able to go to the RateMyLife website, and on a scoring of 1-10 rank how a person's life is compared with others. Remember size of life entry does not imply boring. I could see how a short life entry could be very exciting - especially if it involved amateur rocketry and animal husbandry (don't go visual).
Others which are longer could be even more pathetic than mine: Day 1 - got up, didn't kill self in shower, went to work, came home, watched mindless thrumb, passed out. Day 2... Day N (last entry) - going to take up high-endurance running after a sedentary lifestyle of reading slashdot, watching friends on my DVD player, and eating Ding-Dongs...
Oh wait - it's Hoboken. Nevermind.

Did they use the cat's tongue for selecting the cells to be cloned? They had to try out several attempts before they got a perfect copy of Bill...

Smile, it's Wednesday!
Nice and portable and reasonably consistent feel and appearance.
And for those who like to use it in a scripting environment, use it as is. Use it with Perl, C, C++, etc...

Can be extended nicely - runs on most platforms, has GUI support, has multiple OO extensions, is widely used in testing telecommunications systems.
Why is it left out?
And tatoos the Palm logo on your butt...
