How many corporations do you know call Microsoft when they have a problem with Word that they need solved? I am a subcontractor to Lockheed Martin (work with their IT division no less) and no one I know of has ever contacted MS for a question concerning anything in the Office suite. Either there are no questions to begin with or if there are then someone looks online or asks someone else in the office about the problem and eventually someone does know the answer. If no one does they just find a workaround. This is especially the case if you have to pay $200+ per incident to MS. Based on this I highly doubt support is the issue. The issue is that managers don't see the Microsoft name attached to OpenOffice, or any company name for that matter.
As an admin, I occasionally poke around to make sure everything is okay (verify checksums once in a while), but invariably, everything is fine.
Ever hear of Tripwire? If you got the budget it will make checking those checksums easier. I know it works on HPUX but not sure of other UNIX variants.
If I came up to you and said, go ahead and jump across the Grand Canyon - it's a much shorter way to get across. Don't pay attention to the millions of scientists who have said you'll fall to certain death. I have this theory that says that you can get all the way across, just like Wile E. Coyote, as long as you don't look down. After all, look at Newton and those crazy geocentrists. Would you jump?
That isn't the same type of thing we're talking about when we discuss global warming. Although my last post talked about believing in scientists' theories and in general trusting that they know what they talking about, actually applying a theory is a different matter and one that can't be used to make a good comparison to global warming because you can't apply it to test something(e.g. it's going to get hotter, oh look its hotter, must be global warming). Your theory was able to be tested. Global warming only allows predictions that don't mean anything. All we can do is look at data and the world around and guess at the cause for what we see. You can predict all you want that more ice will melt next year but what stops you from predicting that in 10 years it won't reverse and we end up with below avg temps? You can predict that it will refreeze or get even hotter but until we know the reasons the predictions are meaningless. Nothing says that a warming or cooling trend lasts forever either. Eventually we'll experience global cooling. We've gone through multiple Ice Ages and therefore we've gone through multipe "Hot Ages". The temperature patterns are random and any "extra" heat the earth/inhabitants/etc. produces leaks out into space (the [3rd?] law of thermodynamics). If it didn't we would have burned up long ago. The liberals get all wound up when the conservatives go crazy over something and now the earth is warming up a bit and the liberals are the ones running around with their heads cut off, but it's okay because they are always right about things. To answer your question, yes, I'd jump....about 3 feet while looking down and realize your theory put to use doesn't work.
It's clear to me that *one side* is horrendously guilty of twisting the facts, and that occasionally media types (who are hardly on the other side) are guilty of playing chicken little. However, if you actually RTFJs, you'll find the side that does not tend to twist the facts nor exaggerate the consequences. (I'm talking about the science, not the literal politics.
Of course scientists don't twist the facts. They merely misinterpret evidence despite being the ivory tower scientists slashdotters believe them to be. Scientists, all of them, can view things the same way (the wrong way) because they are too close-minded or just think they are right to begin with and have no need to look at the evidence in a different way. How many years did Newton's laws hold up again (yes they are correct BUT they don't tell the full story either)? How many years did people (even the greatest minds of the time) think the Earth was the center of the universe? Scientists are not the exalted ones and they can be wrong no matter how many of them agree.
I think it is easy for slashdot users to look at a post such as the one quoted above and declare "thats flamebait -it was only intended to annoy people", because most of them are incapable of understanding where the christian nuts in the US are coming from...
Glad to know you aren't a bigot and an asshole. If you think Christians are your worst problem then you have a much bigger problem. I don't know of anyone who thinks global warming is a sign of the return of Christ (Christian or not), mainly because they do not believe in global warming in the first place. So, are you making your statement based on personal experience or just on your own bigotted knowledge of a religion that you don't like? At best, your post was only intended to annoy/offend people. Oh the irony.
Lights in the sky would only make the local bible-thumpers nervous anyway (Kansas).
Gee, you don't seem bigotted at all, nor bitter. I'd like to meet you sometime since you sound like a real asshole. I've never met a talking asshole before. Have you been in touch with Ripley's yet by chance?
But why ban this, instead of having a healthy debate about it?
Do you want a ban or do you not want a ban? You can't have it both ways. If you have a debate about this then there is no reason why you can't have a debate about Creation vs evolution. It doesn't matter that one is hokey science while the other is religion; that is part of the debate not a reason for not having it (unless you, in general, don't like giving both sides of an argument but you personally seem to like being fair/balanced since you offered the debate idea for this topic).
Bush never told the suicide bombers to go out to kill people and the troops themselves haven't even done so (especially since they are being targeted as well). They chose to do it themselves, just like Hussein chose to execute people. You can complain all you want but trying to place the blame for all these deaths on Bush is like saying the governor of California actually killed off the supposed life that was on Mars. We know that isn't true since even though he used to be on Mars (Total Recall right?) there is a better explanation that fits the same circumstances (there was no life to begin with). Since Bush has not been in Iraq more than a couple weeks (a guess) out of the last 3 years he has the physical INability to have killed those people.
The power supplies wouldn't work in Europe. They use double the voltage in their sockets as the US does. Maybe the PS3s in Japan would work in Europe but I don't know for sure.
Home builders have architectural plans. Machinist have blueprints. Electronic equipment builders have schematics.
I'll take the first option since I know the answer to the following question. Who makes the architectural plans for the home builders? The architect. The architect and the homebuilders know their respective domains, and each other's domain, sufficiently enough they can interface well, evident from the fact a document exists they both understand (arch. plans). They have a good protocol. Developers and marketing/sales/bus. analysts/execs/users don't have a good protocol, or at least they don't talk at the same speed so collisions occur. Without a common, useful protocol/interface (i.e. architectural plans) they can't communicate across their domains. The non-developers don't have time to learn the domain of the developers and it is probably true that developers don't want to learn the domain of the non-developer. But a comprise must be reached on both sides for harmony to be reached.
Software engineering is "Do X, Y, and Z except when A, B, but not C except when A and B and when user isnt E except when user is E and A and B and X and Y are not Z but Z is B when F is..."
That was yesterday....We'll be sending you the updated specs soon.
However the due date is still the day before yesterday so keep working.
Some people actually take that advice so they either kill their child before he/she is born, or they decide to wait a while to give him/her a chance to screw up and only afterwards do they kill the child. For some reason though the former is never considered a crime and the latter is a crime but the excuse is usually temporary insanity. Either way the lack of responsibility in the US (and this article is also evidence of that) is truly saddening.
You took the words right out of my mouth. Anything that has to do with temperature is now the result of global warming. The sun is gradually cooling down and will die in a few billion years. It must be global warming. When comets are near the sun during their orbit they melt a lot. It must be global warming. Women get hot flashes when pregnant. It has to be that global warming.
Well if the comparison is 3 websites against 1 brick and mortar store (not chain) then I think the comparison is viable. If a single store rakes in $10k a day and 3 websites can't match that then the sites aren't making that much money. There are other sites that could rake in that much money and more (especially ones that don't rely on ads). When a site relies on ads for revenue it is a shaky way to stay afloat. A site like Newegg can make profit because they actually sell tangible products but sites like Facebook rely on advertising and that just can't create the revenue that Newegg can or even a single brick and mortar store (let alone a chain) in the same time frame.
Yeah because the first chicken that came from the egg was so special that it didn't need a mother to keep it incubated, to feed it, or do anything that a chicken normally does with its young. If a chicken from that first egg could do all that without a pre-existing chicken then why can't eggs do that now? hmmm? The chicken had to come first to create the egg and to take care of it just as chickens do now.
Don't forget the liberals screaming about evolution and political correctness (because it isn't nice to offend someone unless they have differing opinions).
Obviously if you are using something like a ceaser cypher its now trivial to get the player decryption key.
That would be Caesar, as in Julius Caesar. I'm not sure who/what you are referring to with 'ceaser' other than your lack of spelling and reliance on phonetics.
The porn industry doesn't spend $200 million on a single movie and they don't make deals to pay their top stars 10%+ of profits (as far as I know). It's easier for them to make profit on their movies because of that, even if their distribution is lower (it may or may not be, I don't know).
You seem to have no worries about using another religion's icons and symbols and relabeling them. I guess if M$ used Linux and called it M$ Server 2006 you would have no problem?
Why not? You and rest of the politically correct crowd have done it with the Christmas tree by renaming it the holiday tree and by rebranding Christmas carols as holiday songs. You think it's not the same? Think again.
YOU may be upset that YOU as a follower of the current majority religion are not allowed to run roughshod over the minority faiths, but remember, yours may not remain the majority faith forever and then what will you do?
I'm not running roughshod over them; they are running roughshod over Christianity. THAT is what I have a problem with. Since majority rules in this country minorities have to concede to the majority, whatever that may be. If Christianity ever falls from the top (when it does so will the country as well) then I will concede that the general populace has to accept the fact that the most popular holiday celebrated in December would no longer be Christmas and I would continue celebrating it despite what everyone else does. Oddly enough, as I said in a previous post, I already had to do that this year with the Lockheed Martin Holiday party that I boycotted despite the fact that I'm currently in the majority (which seems to mean nothing to the PC crowd in a democratic country). Don't give the atheists more fodder to remove all religion from the public view; they are already working on having the currency reprinted to remove "God" from the wording as well as other places. They'll have to think of a new word to describe holidays so that there is no hint of religion.
And please note (as you appear to not know): Kwanzaa is NOT a religious holiday. It is a unique African-American cultural observance created in the 20th Century CE.
If the wikipedia entry ( I believe that is where I read this) is of any use, Kwanzaa came out so that African-Americans wouldn't feel left out when Christmastime rolled around for the Christians, which explains why it is just about at the time of Christmas (Kwanzaa starts tomorrow or Wednesday I believe this year). Whether it is religous-based or not, the fact of the matter is that it was created solely to take thunder away from Christmas and the PC crowd as fallen for the ploy. So given that history on Kwanzaa, the holidays aren't quite over despite what Sears Roebuck was advertising on Christmas day (they probably only meant Christmas but its taboo to actually say that word on TV). Merry Christmas to you as well. If you are insulted then oh well. Everytime someone says Happy Holidays I'm insulted so we're even. For the record, I don't mind other faiths, peoples, customs, religions, or whatever you want to include in that list....until those same things intrude on my celebration of faith, custom, and/or religion. Or if a person or group of people force others' faiths, etc. to intrude on mine. This time of year it seems the latter to be the case where politically correct views mean that I no longer see signs of Christmas but of the holidays, whatever the hell that means, which makes it difficult to get in the Christmas spirit. By the way, if we are so uptight about offending other people this time of year (I still wonder why it's only during this time of year and not the whole year; makes that war on Christmas all the more evident) then why didn't we start this politically correct bullshit 100 years ago?
And people will also respond to the last thing you said (especially since it was the more obvious of the two accusations) because it is the freshest item on their mind. Given the ability to review the whole statement and formulate a response she may very well have come up with "I'm not unqualified to do diagnostics". Try changing the order of your statement next time and see what happens.
Blaming GWB in this conversation is petty. You can oppose his policies without blaming him for events that he didn't cause. But blaming him for everything you see is just intellectual bankruptcy.
Get used to that type of response. It is the liberal way to blame someone else and if they can blame a republican President then why the hell not, even if the cause/effect relationship doesn't hold up. The economy is booming now with the DJIA hitting record highs but I bet some liberals still say the economy is worsening until 2 years from now when (assuming the DJIA is at the same level) a democrat is in Office and all of a sudden the economy is doing awesome.
How many corporations do you know call Microsoft when they have a problem with Word that they need solved? The warning on the lotto ticket is there because the tickets are printed on thermal printers using thermal paper.
Um, I believe that would be "on thermal paper using thermal printers" unless you have a new model of thermal paper I don't know about.

Put a Sony battery in the computers. Their computers will burn up something just like toasters do.
