Unpaid for several years is a bit of an exaggeration. You know a 4'x3' Steelcase electrified panel is a few hundred dollars? It's not cheap in any case. It allows the company not to plan ahead, and to have a work enviro where they can monitor people more easily, and people feel less free.

  11. Mental state on Dealing with Posture Problems? · · Score: 1

I spent a year in an unhappy relationship, and the combination of no will to live plus a job known for twisting a brother into knots was not good for me. I've spent the last 1-2 years getting healthy again, and it takes a lot of mental energy more than anything else. Rather, mental energy is the root of the problem/solution, and therefore that's the part of yourself you need to master.

I find that doing yoga is very helpful. Running, though I kind of hate it, is high-impact and so it jars all of the muscles I've allowed to atrophy into code-monkey shape, and it oxygenates your body, allowing you to heal. I just started taking a martial arts class, and I'm pushed insanely hard in it, which is great. If you're not into martial arts, dance.

I think the single biggest factor in mainenance is becoming hyperactive again. I used to always be stretching, correcting my posture, pausing to do pushups and crunches throughout the day, running whenever I had to go anywhere (like, between the door of my job and the car), and overall just acting like an obsessive compulsive lunatic. But then again, I notice that my attachment to computers is unhealthy and somewhat obsessive compulsive, so it makes sense that I require the same amount of fervent fanaticism to counteract the bad stuff from it.

(pseudoscience alert - I do not stand by these statements as a matter of scientific fact, rather a theory governing one's relationship to one's body. Then again, I have felt qi as a real thing, so who knows?)
I notice there's a big energetic component to stuff like arm strain. I notice that I hold onto energy that I am compelled to express through my hands/arms, and then I have nerve pain in my arms. I know it's psychoemotional problems that have me restrict myself in such a way, and it's really hard to get around it. I used to live in Mexico, where people are far more expressive with their hands. Living in the US, I have a tendency to hold my hands to my sides more even in the face of a desire to express something. I notice that I fold in around my heart center, and sometimes my solar plexus, which is the seat of self. Which is fairly accurate when describing my psychological problems.

I really just recommend you be really present in your body, and develop your own science for relating to yourself. Physical exercise helps you maintain that connection, and I highly recommend kinetic, fluid movement such as dance, aerobics, or martial arts to counteract the sitting.

Ralph Nader's calling. He wants his rhetoric back.

The Earth is a closed energy system in that we have no control over the incoming energy from the sun. I'm not just talking about the hydrogen and oxygen, but the manpower used in accumulating the wealth of materials necessary to send a person to space.

Tell me how many man-hours it takes to amass the resources necessary for a spaceship, and we'll talk about how full of rhetoric I am. You have a very limited view of how much energy expenditure goes into things. And if you in fact have a degree of some sort, maybe you should call the school and ask for your money back, because all they did was teach you to think linearly very quickly. Which I think gnats can do, and they don't receive much of an education usually.

For instance, how many of us are going to make it into space? Not many... why? We have the technology to do everything we want to in regards to space flight, except for being able to supply energy cheaply. Will we ever figure out a way to do that? I certainly hope so.

The truth is if we don't figure out zero point energy, we're not going anywhere without destroying the planet. The problem with supplying energy cheaply is that it's got to come from somewhere. If you take any energy system, any accounting system, any distributed economic system with limited resources, you have to look at the true cost of things.

In other words, the reason why very few ever make it to space is because it takes energy equivalent to providing the basic alimentary and medical needs for millions of people to get a few people into space. I know that there are valuable side benefits to the space program, such as Tang, but ask yourself if it's really worth burning up the resources of a million starving children to get there.

Of course, we could divert our martial efforts out into space, so in the words of that guy from Team America, we wouldn't end up with shit all over ourselves, rather, shit in space. But hey, that's not happening any time soon, because we're harvesting energy over there. Whose energy? I would venture a guess that it's the starving and exploited who serve the earth who should decide what to do with its guts.

An excerpt from my novel, 2008 (not as catchy a title as 1984, but I'm trying):
"Ah," we said, "Poor old man. He's going ferking batty."

So, what confuses me is that if you say the current government we serve under doesn't care about us, people get their panties in a bunch. However say, "Feudalist govts were horrible, evil oppressors," people agree. If you say, "The Roman govt was a horrible and evil oppressor," people agree. If you say the Russian govt, the Serbians, the Japanese warlords, the Egyptians, pretty much everyone and his goat's grandmother in the middle east, India, Oprah, Kim Jung Il, or Saddam, people say, "Evil! Evil! Evil!"

So. Our government is a massively organized, oppressive military force bent on clouding our judgement, keeping us complacent and stupid, and harvesting our resources and lives for their own desires. They have no regard for our lives. They only want our water--new rule, if you haven't read Dune, you don't get to read /. They have no regard for the children. They are poisoning us, injecting us with experimental drugs from the time we're born, eating food out of our children's mouths, stealing candy from every baby. They are destroying our land, they are poisoning our streams killing every natural means of sustenance on the face of the planet. And yes, with the expansion of the NSA spying program, the integration with online medical records, the ability to arrest people warrentless, without bail, and without explanation, I am scared. Let us please stop worrying about China, because there is so much work to do on our side of the table, and nothing we CAN do on theirs.
