... before we see pay per read?
If an author doesn't want it's book to show up as a used book at amazon he should write a book that people want to keep. Something that is good enough to read again one day. Those books won't show up as second hand at amazon...

It's supposed to deal with the congres, so they made it work the same way, the more you pay, the more you can say...
More info and pictures are here. Including a flash introduction that shows some more thing about it. It has signal lights to indicate the direction it is going. I like that. No tech info there though.
Do you trust the world enough for that? Take a look around! Sure, from a science point of view it's a big achievement. But it one of those things that are sure to be abused and I this case the damage is very likely to be bigger then the gain from it. Besides that, Dr Antinori takes great risks with the life of this child and I don't think he has the right to do so.
Nobody really knows whether or not cloned humans will have the same issues that cloned sheep have
Well, that whould be even more reason not to mess with these kind of things!
[sarcasm] I've got a medicine for you, it will make you, yes even you, smarter then anybody else. It killed sheep when testing it, but that shouldn't cause any fear for it. I'm sure you'll love to be the first one to try! [/sarcasm]
But apart from that, this 'researcher' is playing with the live of this kid. As said by previous posters, the risks are very big. Would you like to test a 'bullet proof vest' that had bad results when tested on animals? That like the thing that is happening to this child, he might be born, will be subject to all kinds of research for the rest of his life and risks all kind of very serious health problems. I woudn't want to explain that to my child!
Besides, what's the use of it? We'll might some day have 'time-shifted identical twins', so what? The only use there I see are things like a spare president, are a new Bin Laden every year, just in case somebody catches him. And ofcourse it's good for the huge ego of Dr. Antinori.
It's not worth it...

Read the article, it's not like the thing is 'only' serving mail. They run other apps on it and used zVMS to run linux in a separate virtual machine.
But what about VP4? It's a better codec, and it's proprietary. VP3 is old news.
Worse, even VP4 is almost old news, the first (alpha) version of VP5 is allready there. My bet is we will get vp4 under LGPL by the time vp6 arrives...
How do they stay in buisness? Re-licensing it for money?
Read this: The power of this codec has been validated by the fact that it has been licensed by both RealNetworks and Apple for their internet video players.
They do license it right now. They might get in to trouble with this though, since they can't forbid anybody to use the LGPL'ed version or make them pay for it once it is released to the public. So they might get a lot of support from the OSS community, wich will improve their software, but likely not their income...
Not only in the US, also in the Netherlands. The difference between US and NL isn't that big, only the influence of large companies is a little smaller here.

That's BULL! I don't care if your 15, 16, 17 or 18....if you are living with the parent then your subject to their rules.
That's exactly the argument of a lot of parents forcing their kids to things they want. This goes from chosing an education for them to actual abuse, so please don't use these kind of arguments lightly!
What's the use of this? Parents still have their eye's these day, right?
With my kids having this tingy I can have peace of mind 24 hours a day while your child is the high tech envy of the neighborhood!
Wrong twice, I still have to keep an eye on where my kid is, but on some GPS screen now. Does that help? Yeah, a bit, I'll now it when he/she gets far away. Does that stop them from climbing trees or running onto the street in front of a car? Nope. So no peace of mind unless I'm able to personally keep an eye on my kids (or except the fact that there will always be risks, think about it: the biggest cause of death is being born). Besides that, i'll still have to check the position of my child every minute and even then I'll be to late if something happens...
And no, the other kids will not envy my children because of Big Brother parents. (A always wander why this seems to be a very important argument to parents, at least there are big bucks earned just with this argument...)
Meanwhile, Microsoft is rubbing their hands together that.NET's major competitor as a platform isn't having their award-winning products spearheaded by corporations.
Perhaps, but on the other end there is nothing said about the other candidates not being good enough. BEA WebLogic get's some very good remarks in the article. Also, it's kind of a proof that open source software can be a good solution and MS will not be happy with that...
BTW, I just love this quote: "JBoss stopped being an application server a long time ago -- it is now officially a phenomenon," says ECA judge Sheil.
What about KDE and GNOME diallers? Both work great.
True, it's just as easy as setting it up on Windows, and i had to help numerous people to do just that. Joe Sixpack doesn't know and doesn't want to know about DNS, smtp server, etc. Typing the setting over from a nice booklet with all the screenshots in it is to scaring and to difficult for a lot of people. They just want to pop in a cd, with autostart(!), and answer a few question that shouldn't be more difficult then 'what's your name?'. Now try to create a CD that does that job on only 80% of all linux boxes around...
It's not enough if things are easy for you and me, thing should work without the user having to actualy *think* about it or learn something.
The same is true for office. I've had people come to me asking if i could replace WinXP with Win98 on there brand new box, just because so much things where 'so different'. Now try to imagine what a massive shock it must be for those people to switch from Word to OpenOffice Writer.
Make schools use linux desktops and in few years you will have people that don't want to use windows because it's 'difficult' and 'different'.
From the IBM lyrics: we can't fail for all can see,
that to serve humanity
has been our aim.
Now that's a company we all will support, they exist to serve us, not to make profit or something, nope, just to serve humanity.
Or would they mean serve as in AS400?
I got a big Gateway ad about the Gateway 500SE, 'Broadens your horizon' it said. Combined with the article i thought it would 'broaden my horizon' by loading a nice linux distro by default, but nope. The minimum possible amount of software was WinXP home AND MS Works.
Now that makes me wander, Gateway testified agains MS without the fear of loosing there OEM deal, but on the other end they still follow the rules of MS. The same is true for some of the other parties that testified in the case.
I would think that now is the time to do the things they want. It will be very hard for MS to act agains it with all those eyes on this case. Why don't they dare to try out what happens when they start selling OS-less or linux PC now?
We're all in this business together.
Read: We all want to get money from our costumers, lets do it together instead of competing with each other. (and leave the customer a choice.)

We hope to dispell the myth that this covers all application service providers.

I wonder, if this system is ever going to be used, how long it will take before the cops get sick of all the false alarms and drop it again.

I hate it when companies have dreams, they should have stuf that works!
it really works, and it's not just PC hype
