Don't forget that the company can make a return by investing the "extra" money that you paid up front. Over a few months time with enough units sold they can recover the cost (or at least some of it) by investing it or at least using that capital in other places. Your money hard at work!!!
We're running Jetty on an AS/400 in production. Startup times are slow, and I think we'd get much better preformance using a native language on this platform, but it works pretty well. It gets the job done.
Very True! Nice comments. The only thing I'd say (and this could be resolved in newer versions of Redhat) is that the disk partitioning should be easier. Exactly how would I know to create a swap partition the first time I installed Linux/Redhat....it's not like I'm actually gonna read the freakin' manual?
and your point is????
I for one welcome our new X replacing overloards.
Somebody had to do it.
I for one welcome our MPAA non-screening overloards.
Linux was made from Scratch...Good one! LOL You're an idiot.
GNU is the law? Huh! That was an interesting statement. I always though GNU was crap.

What is this so called "Solaris" thing?
lol
Hummm.... might want to rethink that....
>> Does that make us the second most powerful now? :)
Nope. That's makes you the first loser!
Mini-Me, stop humping the "laser"...
I thought everyone already knew all of this? Is there something new here?
Nothing at all IMHO. :)
They may propose a new standard based on 802.11, so it may be none of the above, but rather a new and improved 802.11 spec.
Yum. Yum.
'bout time someone realized that people other than Linux geeks might want to install a program or two :-)
Do you go to work just for the love of playing with technology? If so please inform your employer that your salary is no longer necessary.
Why does everyone act like Microsoft is not supposed to try to make money?
or we could ask them to record one.
News Flash! People still use guns for "gangland hits and armed robery".
Why didn't they just write one in VBScript like all the other newbies?
1. Spending $x here saves $xxx there.
3. You'r dreaming again, or either your users are a lot sharper than mine....if so, congrats!
5. That's the price you get when you have lots of users and you negotiate.
OpenOffice is great product and it is easy to use. I love it.. I use it.
Is a Linux desktop ready for the average user? No.
I'm definitely not a "MS wannabe". I think Linux is great! It's just not ready for the average desktop user; YET!
It's come a long way in the last few years.
I too use Linux, Windows, OpenOffice, and MS Office every day.
Star/OpenOffice opens MUCH slower than MS Office.
Step out of your cubicle for just a minute and look at this situation without your Linux blinders.
1. Actually we use a hardware cloning device called "Image MASSter 2000". It works great.
2. Yep.
3. Yes, but you'd spend a lot more than that training IT staff and users on Linux.
4. Yep. Minor screw-ups happen no matter what you are using, but we've never had anthing that wasn't easily fixed.
5. McAfee = $10 per machine...
Me: "Hey boss I think we can save $10/machine by deploying Linux on the desktop and all we have to do is retrain our IT staff and users."
Boss: "Are you stupid or something?"
