This is utterly and completely wrong. The installer won't allow you upgrade from pre-RTM versions unless you manually bypass the check, which is not supported. Just read the linked blog post.
This is one of the most important developments in Windows history and will shape the future of Microsoft's operating systems. XP Mode will finally allow Microsoft to remove all of the legacy crap that's been holding Windows back for at least a decade.
Haha, that made me laugh out loud. If you think two languages is bad, you've obviously never been to Europe. It's not uncommon to see a dozen languages not only on cereal boxes, but on almost any packaging.
The new Office is called "2007 Microsoft Office System." It was first announced to the public on Jensen Harris' blog (he is one of the architects of the new UI). The official Microsoft announcement for the press can be read here. I don't like it much, but it looks like they use the old car manufacturer naming scheme. Does this mean that we can expect a 2008 Microsoft Visual Studio?
HTML is simply not going away, any more than times new roman is.
I know this is OT, but actually, Times New Roman is going away, or at least Microsoft will do everything they can to make sure it does. Office 12 will have newer, modern fonts which will also ship with Vista. One of them will be the new default for Word documents. Read more about it here.
You're right. There was a show on the Discovery channel a few months ago about this procedure. They took photos of the faces from cadavers before and after the transplantation and presented them to a panel of experts, who concluded that the face on a different person only slightly resembles the donor. Even if you knew the donor, you most probably wouldn't recognize his face on the recipient, unless someone told you to take a good look.
As to who would want such a transplant, one possible patient, who was also featured in the show, is this girl. She was burned alive one night while she was going home when a drunk driver hit her car and it caught fire. 60% of her body was burned, she lost her nose, ears, fingers and most of her vision.
It is true that Gallery 1 doesn't scale well, but this isn't so with G2. It has been designed with scalability in mind, so it should theoretically scale to millions of images. The largest I've seen myself is used by an image hosting company, and there are a little less than a million pictures in it, and it still works beautifully. You can read an in-depth comparison of Gallery 1 and 2 on this page.
You can definitely have a photo in multiple albums in G2. They're called linked items or something similar. There are only albums and items in Gallery. There is a root album that can contain an arbitrary number of subalbums and items. Items can be photos, movies, or anything else a plugin is available for. Some have even added support for audio items.
Regarding your complaints about keywords, they can be added to items and searched for, but there is still a lot to be done in this area. AFAIK, the next version should support functionality similar to Flickr - e.g. albums generated on the fly based on keywords.
Since the functionality is completely separated from display, you can use its easy to customize templating system to completely adapt its look to your needs. I've been using it for a few months, and I must say I'm impressed. Seems to be the best photo gallery in town:)
You're missing the skunkworks aspect of the project - Nobody in the systems division (except for David and the rest of the Win3 team) wanted to get windows applications working in protected mode - it would directly compete with Windows and Microsoft's strategic direction was 100% focused on OS/2. Windows was a distraction.
If David hadn't done it, then nobody would have - that's why I described it as a tipping point. If David hadn't been working on that project at that time, Windows 3 wouldn't have happened and history would have changed.
Read the rotten.com biography for a few laughs, if you haven't seen it yet. It contains a priceless mugshot of a grinning Bill when he was brought in a precinct for some kind of traffic violation 20-30 years ago.
Well, we might never get a SS2 remake, but here's the next best thing. It's called System Shock 2 Rebirth, and it replaces most low-polygon meshes with new high-res counterparts. Looks like the development has stopped last year in Beta phase, but it's still worth checking out. I completed the game from start to finish with this mod and it didn't affect the gameplay at all.
I agree completely that stem cell research must not be restricted, the potential benefits are simply ming-boggling. But the Associated Press article I read earlier today which covers this same story, however, states that "it's not clear any major scientific ground has been broken, and tests may not be able to show whether the new bone came from stem cells, rather than from the growth factor alone." So in this case stem cells might not have anything to do with the results. That article is pretty detailed as well.
For workstation users it is also a nice extra that with a SLI configuration a total of four monitors can be driven off of the respective DVI outputs on the graphics cards, a feature we'll undoubtedly see pitched as a major feature for the Quadro version of the GeForce 6800 series SLI configuration.
I posted this when Slashdot ran the previous Venus transit story, but I'm afraid that not many people had the chance to read it, because I was pretty late into the discussion. Anyway, you don't get to read something like this every day, and the quote can be read in context now, this month, and never again.
"There will be no other [transit of Venus] till the twenty-first century of our era has dawned upon the earth, and the June flowers are blooming in 2004. What will be the state of science when the next transit season arrives God only knows." - William Harkness, USNO, 1882.
Just thought this might be an interesting thing to share with you:

The Department of Energy (more precisely, the Energy Information Administration) wouldn't agree with you. Their fact sheet says:
"scientists discovered large deposits of natural resources such as coal, natural gas and offshore oil reserves in the early 1980s".
WLS Chicago has just reported the Canadian PM said that lightning struck one of the Niagara Falls generators, and that might be initial cause of the cascade. They also reported that Hilary Clinton suggested a connection between the deregulation and these events should be investigated.
It looks like the worm affects svchost.exe (the Generic Host Process), and keeps restarting the computer. At first I thought that some of my hardware was failing, but after reading dozens of posts on Usenet about similar problems, I wasn't really sure. So I researched a bit on Google, and found the MS security bulletin. After patching my system, the problems seem to have gone. I guess I should have followed more closely Microsoft's security announcements.
So, if you have strange issues with the RPC, or are experiencing similar symptoms as I have, patch up now!
More interesting is the documentation of the apparent exponentially decaying attention span of slashdotters. Anybody else observed similar phenomena?"
Actually, yes. Stephen Adler did an analysis of the/. effect, where you can see similar graphs. It's not surprising, really.
Also, there was an article on a hardware review site, if I remember correctly, where their approach to handling extreme load was discussed after their site was linked on Slashdot. Unfortunately, I can't find the article right now. Anyone around here who remembers?
What I think is sorely missing from a lot of the games arriving now is CO-OP!
Have you tried Serious Sam (2)? It's a really fun game, reminds me of the original Doom. Dozens of enemies attack you, in contrast to most of todays FPSs. The best thing of all - there's coop! You can play through the entire single-player campaign with your friends.

According to this, he can also calculate the 23rd root of a 200 digit number in 41 seconds. There's also a picture of him there.

I think he was trying to be funny, if not, I recommend reading something like this.

It seems that the site's been slashdotted. Any mirrors?
:)
Here's your chance for karma-whoring

At around $20, it's damn cheap, too!
