    - PDF reformatting and printing of large and rich text documents.
    - Quick search
    - Caching of 300GB hard disks
    - Image and video processing
    A lot more can be imagined...

    Ok... I am sure Linux is available. But the task is opposite: I want a decent and relatively cheap desktop 64-bit computer to work with, but as for now, none is available.

    If it would run Linux... Oh! Whatever! OSX is a BSD in its core! Ok
    May be it's time to switch platform... I'll think about Apple on my equipment request if computers with 64bit CPUS will be available as desktops.

    But old economy took a hit; people who went into "new" economy had created inflation pressure to the people who decided to stay with the "old" economy - driving home and other prices up. That forced people from the "old" economy to become miserable: for example a price for medium 1-bedroom apartment in Northern VA rose from $650 in 1997 to $1100 in mid 2000.
    No police officer or school teacher or other "old economy" man can compete with those $65k/y Visual Basic WEB dot-com people...

    The coming Air Rage
    Seriously, it's not so hard to make automated systems for collision avoidance. Much harder is to create pollution-free and cheap fuel engines (fuel cells? cold fusion?).
    Much much harder to resolve all the landscape and noise issues. Near Washington DC even small helicopter pad to which 6 or 7 helicopters expected to be landed created a lot of rage and crying from residents. Result is that that pad has never been built. And I think it's good.

    You are forgetting one small fact:
    A lot of people doesn't care about picture quality if it's more than from a movie made in 1960
    I assume about 60% really doesn't mind to see a bootleg copy of an interesting enough film,
    even if its visually not perfect and have mono sound with noises.

    can easily recoup her $50 000 by participating in gigs, parties and private parties.

    You were able to manage your career and make an expectations of what you'll be earning and you were able to manage your credit. Gen-X-ers were in the situation of complete unpredictability - in the start of 90-x we have no real way - old economy stops, new picked up. So we were NOT able to figure out what happens next, our hopes were too bright, unfortunately.

    It depends also on where you live. In Midwest or South you can earn mere 55k while in California you may get whopping $80k for almost the same job.

    I just want to say that in modern mainstream programming most part of programming (except OS, driver, some real-time applications, special numeric and AI tasks)
    encouraged to be done in form of UML or other
    diagrams and patterns. Those diagrams and patterns work like lingua franca between languages, Alma is a good example of
    this approach.
