  1. Re:Simply Answer on All Source Code Should Be Open, Revisited · · Score: 1

Imagine company "A" releases the source for their code with each binary. Each customer makes their own additions to the software, compiles and then continues running their new modified code. Even if it is only a small adjustment, the product is no longer the product you were sold.

How can companies offer support to a product when they have no way of knowing whether you are running an altered version of it? Furthermore, if company "A" sell "Intranet v1.0" to a company, and from then on that client can make their own changes, company "A" will never be able to sell an upgrade or another product to them again.

No one is going to do that, just the same as no one will ever sell "The everlasting light bulb".

If everyone was carrying a gun, do you think anyone would be stupid enough to try and shoot someone?

    does that mean...

If everyone was carrying an M16, no one would be stupid enough to try and shoot someone?

    Or conversly...

If no one carried a gun, no one would be stupid enough to try and punch someone?

In reality, the threat of equal force is not sufficient to counter the threat of violence. Only the threat of a higher degree of force will stop the threat of attack. Banning guns will not end the threat of violence, people will still stab and punch. However, everyone owning a gun is not a sufficient deterent to stop the threat of violence either. It just means the people you are trying to defend yourself against are inclined to increase the degree of force used to overcome your defenses.

Centuries of warfare and violence have proven conclusively that the threat of violence is not a sufficient deterent to stop people who intend harm.

So what is the point of increasing our own abilities to cause harm to others, when it will just provoke the others to increase their abilities to harm us?

What about it? We don't have people walking around with automatic weapons, rifles or shotguns. At least i can walk down to the Supermarket without fear of being shot.

But i don't want to start a debate on gun control here. My original point was that Australia (being behind the 8 ball in technology) has an opportunity to see how the rest of the world runs and then learn from their errors. With the exception Senator Alston, Australia is quite open to new Technology and doesnt see fit to censor it as some here say.

(Also, no Australian drinks Fosters, contrary to what the international marketing boffins would have you believe.)

I know we can be a little backward down here in Australia, but at least in lagging behind we can see the stupid things other people do and learn from their mistakes.

It seems that we don't suffer from knee-jerk policy making quite as bad as some other countries.

I am all for Open Source software, don't get me wrong, but if a "business" is forced to give away all of its IP then said business would go broke very quickly. That goes for M$ and the rest of us who develop software "for a living".

From a users perspective it is great to want things for free. As a business I don't want to be giving away my secrets which i have spent a fortune developing. This isn't about monopolistic behaviour, it is about good business sense. You just don't go giving away the things which put food on your table!

Of course if you think VHS is inferior then you may want to at least have a listen to either of the new formats.

The reality is that the current generation of consoles is aimed at the kids who grew up playing SNES and the like. They are now 25+ and arent going to have their young minds warped by a bit of swearing and nudity.

Games have ratings for a reason. I still can't believe that games that portray realistic violence never cause a fuss, and yet a game which contains a bit of T&A and some swearing wont be stocked by some stores. Talk about a warped sense of reality...sheesh!
