Is it just me or has Lucas forgotten that the first trilogy relied heavily on characters like Solo, who contrasted with Skywalker in an amusing way?

It seems as though the characters in ep 1 lack the personality seen in the first three movies. In a new hope, we had an idealistc farm boy, a rogue with a heart of gold and a princess thrown together in an epic adventure. This was far more entertaining than watching a couple of boring pious jedi and a poor attempt at comic relief going through the motions of the plot, without the characters having any real vitality

IMHO for episode 2 to be its best, Lucas needs to inject life into the movie by making the characters more than just people dragging along a plotline
