I never buy cheap laptops either, but this is for kids! You don't buy your kids a brand new Mercedes CLK when they just get their license, but you buy them a second hand Civic...to learn. (Actually you shouldn't buy a car for your kids, they should work and buy one themselves to get a grip on the value of money -- but I'm deviating)

    Actually, at the private school I goto there was this one kid in my class . . . He turned 16, got his license by some damn miricle, and got a brand new Volvo S70 to go with it. Two days later he totaled the marvoulous piece of machinery and low and behold he got a new one. Within the week the same thing had happened again.

    We once thought 1024 bit encryption was unbreakable. Everything can be broken it just depends how much work you put into it. Also nothing is totally random.

    I think it is good another country is in space. It is a vast frontier that if we want to explore we need to work togeather, globally. The ISS is a start but we need to get many more countries to have space programs. It is a world effort to do anything up there and it is somewhere worth exploring.

    I am afriad that StarOffice won't work seemlessly with Word, both opening a word document and then saving it so word can later read it. I work with others on some things and need to have this back and forth between programs. How does StarOffice do? I have played with it some but havn't yet felt like fully testing it out. What other programs does it work with in this new version?

    A lot of the time Java seems slower than other languages. Also games won't look the same on each box. No longer would companies be competing for hardware and sw but just hardware which I doubt they would go for.

    vnc is suppossed to be good and it works for free. I know Norton also sells Remote Desktop but I have never used that. For big companies, Tarantella kicks ass!

    I am happy just having id on a state level. When I need some form of more real id I have my passport. Why does the national government get to id us all and then in the future be able to use this information in a bad way? I say no to national id cards, look what happened in aparthide South Africa. They are a badw idea no matter what.

    Rockets, at least in my opinion, are dying out or at least should be. Reusable fixed wing craft are what we need if we want to continue to make progress in the future. We should spend the money on space exploration and not wait for another national crisis to get the president to order us to "get to the moon" before another country. Space is a vast frontier that we can learn a lot from.

    Now that it has a 10 gb drive it may be worth buying. I have wanted one for awhile and wished Apple would support Windows with them. Oh well. A $500 pricetag seems a little steep and will defer me from getting one right now.

    til hackers figure out how to take advantage of this. :-D Then we will priority websites, games, images, and more looking like govt traffic. Then how long before websites figure out how to take advantage of it? Also if I were running a router I would deprioritze this traffic. I have nothing against government traffic but I would want the traffic that actually makes me money to be sped up not slowed down by other priority traffic. And who says it is priority or when it is priority. They already have their own networks why can't they just use those?

    Morpheus is already dead. ever since they screwed up about two weeks ago by saying they released an update but not doing so screwed them over. It basically shut down the entire network killing their argument in court that their network couldn't be shut down. The company has also said they will no longer develop new software.

    So if this GPL liscense is so bad why do so many projects use it? Look at Sourceforge, everybody on there uses it. Also what is the difference between the GPL and the GNU liscense and why do we see them written as GPL\GNU?

    If I remember correctly more than just the nine states are gonna go after Micro$oft. A lot of others didn't like the decision that it was over so they were pressing to. How will this effect it or am I just totally off my rocker and need a good slap from Cowboy Neal?
