while javascript can be potentially dangerous, a properly secured system will prevent most malicious javascript from doing any serious harm. of course, there are always new flaws that may allow access to admin level items, this is no different from any other network service running on a computer though.
funny thing about windows 2000 is that many large corporations still dont support windows xp due to application compatibility, performance overhead, unproven security and more.. one company that comes to mind is Progressive, they are still a 100% windows 2000 shop
I don't want to steal your beautiful OS, I truly don't. I am more than willing to pay for it. I've owned Macs in the past, I loved my power book and my iMac, and i'll probably eventually by another power book. But truth be told I like building my own PCs and having the extra options that goes along with that. Don't your get that? A company that has its roots in a garage, you were born out of the hacker mentalitiy. When did you get so damn anal? Please apple, please wake up. We will pay, lots of us will. But I don't want your desktop hardware.
Back in the days of UO when quake 1 was popular ping times rule because everyone was on a modem. I really dont think this is a viable issue today with solid broadband connections.
For the most part cd's are your safest bet. You can rock out with more clarity using mp4s and for the most part drm is not issue. I've heard the horror stories on-line of a few cds like the whole sony root-kit debacle but personally i've never had an issue.
I'm sure apple is counting on piracy to spread the popularity of os x throughout the world. Not only that but by people pirating os x, it will provide a bunch of free beta testers for officially unsupported drivers of various hardware. Of course they're going to make os x intel hard to pirate for average mom computer user. But the more adept user will be able to find the crack and use a pirated version. It wouldn't surprise me if part of the intel transition business plan that piracy was an expected and welcome result of the move. All it does is grant them greater exposure.

After browsing the pdf this os looks very promising. It's implementing a lot of technologies that have to this point only been theorized or tested in very small scale environments. I personally applaud microsoft for taking this initiative on dependenability, for it is something that they have lacked focus on for the past 15 years or so. And i'm honestly kind of disgusted with general microsoft bashing in these comments. Judge technology by it's merits and pitfalls not by it's creators past acheivement, or personal disputes with it's creator. -- nuff said

And can someone please explain me to how an opaque plastic bag sitting behind the 7-11's counter is an adequate safegaurd? I mean personally I could care less if you want porn on you xyz device or not, but content control of digital pornography has been handled very well throughout the Internet boom, so why should it be any different for the iPod--end rant
this guy is a moron. society thrives by improving things that were already created. It's called moving foward and making progress. I tempted to fly to london and smack the bbc around some.
PPC architecture is good but so is x86 64... So I'm somewhat curious as to why you feel so strongly about using a PPC chip. Personally I've owned sparcs, an alpha, pelnty of x86, and ppc boxes. At the end of the day I use whichever platform gets my job done in the quickest manner.

Can't believe it's been 10 years since I attempted to do a seamless upgrade on my p90... Ah yes. I must truly thank M$ for releasing it though, because without w95 I would have never sought out linux.
This will never work because the mass majority of people who are using IE don't even know what the web standards are, let alone care about them enough to boycot a product. And as a web developer I can't tell my clients "soory your site might not work in IE 7 because i'm boycotting it right now." Nice thought, but get a clue.

heck look around a hospital and see how many p4 desktops running windows xp have a 3270 terminal emulator open.. as much as people say the mainframe is dying, all the technology that made it popular are being reimplimented today on cheaper hardware... os/390 lpars vs xen for instance. very little innovation over the past decade overall in the software industry. its sad in a way.
here we have a 20 year old protocol, a part of the Internet infrastructure that hasn't been touched in 10 years and we were all sure was right, and now is cast in doubt.
This seems very typical of science in all fields. An unproven theory goes unrebutted for some time untill someone realizes we made a big mistake. The world was once flat remember guys! One thing this should point us to is that no matter how solid something appears, it will always be broken whether it be a theory, a protocol or yes even the fortress known as open bsd *duck* Jokes a side, remember nothing is secure.
For every one million failed operating system there will be one great success. The attitude of you guys is somewhat disgraceful to the innovation that has brought the industry to where it is today. If smalltalk and dynix were never developed would the macintosh and windows ever had exisisted? If people never saw past machine language would we able to write the complex applications that scale to thousands of proccessors today? If at&t would have thought that vax was good enough and ran its apps plenty fine would the *nix derrivatives be in existance today. It may seem futile to develop an os but i applaud those that do so, and so should you! Because without the garage coders and the corporate failures we would still be pluggin vaccum tubes to multiply and divide. The attitude you have today is what is plauging the stagnent software industry. Innovate or die I say, because if you don't some kid in the basement will. Or big corporate X will own the market next./end rant
Apple, apple, apple... all I really want is xcode to have as good as support for LAMP (PHP mainly) as it does with java and obj c.. please apple, pretty please.....
use a better firewall. i run devil linux on a dedicated machine and use it as a router/firewall and never have a problem. on the other hand as soon as my younger brother takes his computer back to the dorm it gets infected... it's all whats on your network. cable users seem to be worse off due to the lan you are on with your infected neighbors.
at least this time they have gcc on their side, which will make it a 'little' easier to get things compiled right and running. This will be a huge ordeal, but if anyone can pull it off it will be apple. And 'if' they decide to let it run on any old pc, this could really launch a desktop war.
We live in a capitalist society. What fuels our growth and success is the ability to make money. Large corporations make more money by locking out competition with patents, therfore also being able to provide jobs and health benefits and retirement plans that everyone likes. We also have free software. Great, but software patents restrict it from using xyz feature. Then we have company's who say here you go guys use it for free if your software is free.. Sounds good. It's a heck of a lot better than having an evil corporation prosecuting open source software developers. We're stuck in a catch 22 if no one registers the patent an evil corp will, and open source gets the shaft. What's the solution? Maybe an open patent registry company funded by open source supporters? maybe.. but I personally applaud Nokia, and must ask RMS to take a step down from his cloud and ask him to put up or shut up. His ideals just dont work in todays society
If you want to use debian use debian, if you to use ubuntu use ubuntu. Dont complain cause your baby is dying because you have been neglecting it though.
how long will it be before someone figures out a way to hack these bionic body parts? beaming images of porn, and making ceo's give the board the finger durring a meeting?
I really did a double take on the date after reading that headline. With all of apple's innovation over the years this is one place where the have always dropped the ball on. Next thing you know we'll get a scroll wheel that can act as a 'gasp' third mouse button!
