    b/c it isn't the ISP's problem. Their customers have paid for Internet access and they're providing it. You need to place blame where it really belongs, the spammers. They have illegally hacked the boxes. They are illegally sending spam.

    Going after anyone else is like going after the murder victem's family for letting the victem's corpse litter the street.

    I thought most /.ers believed that EULAs were not enforceable. Interesting to see them argue the other side of the issue.

    I'm of course assuming it was one of the clickthru or break the seal type EULAs. Actually if it was a break the seal type EULA then the person who bought the used copy never really agreed to the EULA as he couldn't have broken the seal. He therefore can't expect the company to abide by it.

    This could have a number of bad consequences if the court takes the view I just stated. We don't want these EULAs to become enforceable against us.

    Think carefuly before taking any futher action.

    If they have no ability to employ critical thinking skills to evaluate a technology, and instead just stare at four color glossies and GUI about boxes, you have nothing to be ashamed about.
    The point is they obviously had some critital thinking skills. They were learning about a new product and were quickly able to poke holes in it.

    If this GNU/Linux crap is so great why could they find some obvious flaws? The answser is this presenter is only an average *nix admin as he admits a few posts above. There is no excuse for allowing such a disaster. This guy should never be alowed to pitch Linux again, unless he greatly improves his skills.

    None of this is that difficult. I'm not one of the everything must be open source or Linux type of person. However in about 60% of the time there is a open source solution that is not only usually free but also close to or better than the Windows or propriety solution.

    What do you expect from a government run school. Of course they're going to teach the kids that the government needs to control the press. It's amazing that it's not higher than half.

    I agree.

    While I started out on a TI-99/4a and TI Basic, I wouldn't start anyone out on any kind of basic.

    PHP is rather simple, Runs on almost anything, Will give them some useful skills immediately (i.e. web & database intergration), and is very useful by itself.

    After they've done a few simple things, I'd move them to Perl and Python rather quickly. Then to some kind of compiled language (C++) once they've demonstrated they know what they're doing.

    It took me a while to figure out the real reason they're going after the .net domain. It is not just b/c the contract up for renewal. If you hop on over to OpenNICYou'll see that all of their important domains also have a .net domain in case you're not using one of their servers yet. Now will the folks at OpenNIC have the resources to renew all of their domains with this extra fee? At the very least it will drain their resources off. ICANN is doing this to kill off any competition. ICANN must be stopped!

    What this is going to do is make companies not want to give out stock options to their employees.

    There is no cost to the company to issue stock or even stock options (unless they decide not to issue more stock but buy on the open market). So this should be reported as a loss. Yes issuing more stock devalues the current stock, but there are a number of regulations out there to make sure everyone knows the company is going to issue more stock.

    Now that they'll have to record a loss it will make the company look like it is doing poorly. Thus a big reason not to issue any more stock.

    This is just an attempt by big government anti-free-market types to make it harder for the little guy to become rich and to perpetuate the old employee vs. employer fight. If all of the employees are owners this fight is less likely to happen and there is less of a need for these silly government and union bureaucracies.

    There's this wide belief that Windows 2000 is better than Windows XP because it's more simple... i.e. less background services, less eye candy, runs faster.
    I don't know what planet you're from but it's not the same one I'm on. Everyone I know thinks Win2k was horrible. Of the three places I've worked for in the last 4 years only one liked Win2k enough to try a massive deployment of it (against my recommendation too). Then in 2001 they realized I was right and I had to downgrade the entire company back to Win98. Most of their windows boxen remained there until WinXP, but I did managed to get Linux installed on about 1/4 of them.

    In school I use to watch about 4-5 hours per week more than the other kids. The teachers always were concerned that it would affect my learning.

    Well it did. I learned way more from TV than I ever did from school. That's because I was watching the educational programs. I was always 2-3 grade levels ahead in math and 1-2 in reading. By time I got to middle school I was on the accelerated track and in high school I was in all advanced classes. Heck I even skipped the 11th grade and got out a whole year early.

    Now if you use the computer a lot, you can learn a lot or you can waste a lot of time. If you spend all your time playing Doom it's just like spending all your time watching the real world.

    The computer like any tool can be used for good or evil.

    Well not exactly like Gmail, but it is a very similar format. Overall I rather like it. You can still get to the orginial format, so I don't see much of a problem here.

    My only complaint would be the email masking, since I identify people by their email address instead of what ever happens to be their nick name.

    Overall I think it is an improvement.

    The spammers want to get people to visit their site right? That is why they send spam. So now they're unhappy that millions are going to their site via the Lycos screensaver? I don't understand they should be happy they are getting what they wanted -- increased traffic.

    The Grandparent is a bunch of lies. The Parent corrects the lies. In responce to the Winamp is dead article, I installed the most recent version of Winamp (I had been stuck with itunes). There was no attempt to install spyware or put the AOL icon on anything. Someone with mod points please do something.

    Sorry but I can't stand Farscape. IMHO SG-1 has been since it first aired and still is the best TV SciFi show in production. The only exception was when Firefly was on TV.

    I am pretty sure you will be able to purchase an "illegal" card from Europe or Asia after the broadcast flag law steps in force. It's not like we live in pre-Internet days after all


    If we get to the 100% searching of cargo containers, you'll not be able to get any thing illegal from overseas. I'm just shocked that the Dems are the ones calling for this instead of the Reps.

    Its good to see regulators and firms acting to protect the more clueless users from themselves, as long as it doesn't prevent people requesting a line be opened.

    I think it is terrible that these regulators and firms are interfering with the communication system. These idiots who are calling theses lines will stop once they have to pay the bill. That's the only way to educate some of these people.

    When you find lost property you're supposed to turn it into the police or the establishment where it was found.

    Not only has this person failed to do that, but what they're doing is a terrible invasion of privacy.

    I hope someone reports this person to the police. Their behavior is outrageous and they should get the full 6 months in jail.

    or acquisition of possession and deposit such property in a police
    station or police headquarters of the city where the finding occurred or
    possession was acquired, but if the finding occurred or possession was
    acquired in buildings or on grounds or premises under the control and
    supervision of the commissioner of general services as described in
    article two of the public buildings law, then the property may also be
    deposited in a station of the capital buildings police. If the finding
    occurred or possession was acquired outside a city, then such property
    shall be deposited in a station or substation of the state police or in
    a police station or police headquarters, including a sheriff`s office,
    of the county, town, or village where the finding occurred or possession
    was acquired. If the finding occurred or possession was acquired in

    No it is more like this:

    Alice and Bob want cookies. Charlene wants spinach. All three vote to take (aka tax) what they want from Tom who is the one who baked the cookies and cooked the spinach and wanted both. Tom doesn't vote b/c he is too busy being a productive member of society.

    The only people unhappy with the situation are the tech folks offsite. One of them asked what was wrong with computer number one. Nothing, I said. It doesn't look right, she said. I told her it was running Linux. She said that she had heard of it. I gave her a Knoppix cd and told her to try it. "I'm not supposed to have pirated software," she said. I told her that I thought it would be okay just this once. Geez.
    A computer tech who has never heard of Linux?!? I don't believe it. What planet is she from? What company is providing this "service?" Remind me never to use them.

    The whole purpose of the blackout policy is to force fans to buy tickets to prevent the blackout. It obviously doesn't work because the Cards still only get 30,000 fans per game. So why do they still use this outdated, policy that doesn't work? None of the other major sports black out home game.


    Not being a football fan, I didn't know this.

    The thing I find interesting is that usually the more visible something is the more fans it has. Football is giving up free advertising with these blackouts. Maybe they don't care since there are plenty of football games on. At least they're not going the way of boxing with it's outrageous pay-per-view fees. How many young boxing fans are there compaired to before they went this route?

    Anyway back to football...As they jackup the cost and difficulty of seeing it they're going to start to have fewer and fewer fans.
