something that has to be taken into account is that the vegetable oil is converted into diesel not petrol, and diesel engines are usually more efficent than petrol engines.Allthough it would still be difficult to produce enough fuel purely from vegatable oil, if this is combined with more efficent engines, other biomass fuels (including hemp, bio-waste( methane from sewage works and landfill sites), hydrogen, and renewable sources of electricity, it would free up petroleum resources for the petrol-chemical uses rather than wasteing it in cars.
also in europe (i'm not sure about the farmering policies in the US) a lot of land is used to grow rapeseed, must of which is payed for with farm subsidies, and just destroyed.
there are a few good sites on converting diesel engines to run on vegatable oil http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&lr=&ie=UTF-8& oe =UTF-8&q=uk+vegetable+oil++diesel+&spell=1

injecting a leader of a world power with alcohol, couldn't see how it would make things worse:) i can think of a recent russian leader who appeared to be pissed all the time.
when reading this article (and many like it) it would be nice if they said what type of alcohol is used ( ethanol, methanol etc). At least this old link mentions this.
how is this offtopic? i quote "So, enlighten us, what is this maximum number the earth can support? I want a NUMBER. And if you can't give me one, how do you know we are past it?" he wanted a number, i give him a number and it's off topic. he ask's a question that cannot be answered with an exact number and my karma heads towards the freezing point of helium, oh well , shit happens
what? you mean i can make love to someone other than myself! damn, thats why everyone else hasn't got forearms the size of popeye. now if i can just figure out a way of getting a beowolf cluster of women:)
one of the most difficult concepts for me to get to grips with when i was studying quantum physics was the interchangability of particle and wave function. i was used to thinking of a particle being represented by a wave function, but was told that this was incorrect, the particle IS a wave function. the quantum world is very strange.
the food problem could have been solved a long time ago but it wasn't , why? it is not profitable? we could easily make transport cleaner and more efficent but there is no profit in that, most people don't care how much there car pollutes. do you remember the prodictions that nuclear power would lead to everyone haveing free electricity? nuclear power is the most expensive way of producing electricity. advances in technology can solve many problems, but the economics and politics stop most of them. then we get people who just stick there heads in the sand or say it's allright, i don't have to do anything, someone else will do it for me.
so tell me, by how much has the average consumption of resources gone down over the last 100 years as technology has advanced? and how come the US and europe with our advanced efficent technologies uses more resources per person than coutries with less efficent tech. ? when did our consumption of resources start decreasing?
:) it's friday afternoon and i want to get out of work and down the pub
knights is the wrong name for the mounted soldiers, during the napoleanic wars ( should it have been cavelary, please correct me on this) but the idea is still the same.
if we don't learn by our mistakes, what's the point of making them?
IIRC the travelling on the lefthand side originates from battles. The knights used to pass the enemy on the left so they could attack the enemy with their sword arm( the right arm). the french changed this because Napoleon was left handed and therefore decided that all the french knights should also attack with their left hand and made them attack the enemy passing on the right. So the reason the US, and most of europe drives on the right is because you are still following Napoleons orders.
"Remember, first strike will win," WTF, no-one wins a nuclear war. Don't believe the hollywood/government properganda.you will not be able to crawl out of your shelter and live happy everafter.water contaminated for 100's of year, what little food can be grown will be contaimenated, no power generation,no oil wells/storage left, no cars,no electricity,no schools,no law, no money,no suppermarkets, no commonications; what sort of superpower would that be.
if i own a company and replace 99% of the workforce with robots, am I going to take all the extra profit I make and spread it around, no way. you all seem to believe in the trickle down effect, which most economists now admit is rubbish, extra money made by fewer people DOES NOT get passed down to the poorer people below them. The 90% of the population that are no longer required to work will not have the resources (money, no work, no pay) to do anything enjoyable with all this extra spare time.
there is an article about green cars (not cars painted green ;) ) in this months physics world

what happened to the s in maths ( a hortening of mathematics not mathematic)?
is that why the US pint is smaller than the british pint

my bet is on
100 rich americans,
