I've been reading this thread. OK linux is great as a geek playground. I used to set up PCs for home users and all they wanted was the same box they use at work with the same software. Their kids wanted to play the latest games that they sell at K-mart etc. This all equals Windoze. Apple and Linux don't have cred with kids and kids drive a lot of computer sales.

Geeks say who cares if its mainstream I can make it work. Well that won't do in the real world. So keep up the geek pissing contest that makes slashdot what it is, but once in a while get out and have a look at the real world. Because Microsoft owns the real world.

I used linux on my second PC for 6 months and even got it networked and sharing my DSL connection but eventualy I got sick of the hassle and put my old copy of WinMe back on. WinMe networked fine with my XP box and everything just worked. My second PC is my wife's main work PC so she was happy to have windows back too. Still I miss the warm fussy counter culture 1337 kind of feeling using linux gave me and all the hacking and command line stuff reminded me of my C64 and Amiga days.

But when it comes down to it i just want it to work. Now all our printers and drives are shared without any probs. If I could have done that with linux without wading through endless command lines and man pages I would still have it there. Oh well now all you linux zelots can start flaming me. Let the stoning commence.

So why does this rate a slash dot? Check any PC casemodding site and you can see better. I've even seen a PC inside a remote control car and the car still drives! Seen far nicer clear case mods too. Apple's own cube was cool, this is just fugly.

This might be novel for the average Apple 'tard but its old news for us 1337 PC types.

I have ADSL in Oz with iprimus and it's great. I pay AU$100 (US$50) a month for 125/512 upstream downstream and a 5 gig cap. Its rare that I have problems.

You can get cheaper, but I'm willing to pay for good service.

Apart from that Oz really is the best country in the world. :)

Life's a package deal, and mine is OK as a whole.

  11. Re:overweight grunts on Future Army Battle Uniforms - Wired, Lethal · · Score: 1

well braniac, my point is that throwing more technology at a grunt will not always make him the dominant player on the battlefield. In Iraq the mobile armoured part of the war was quickly over and done with due mainly to superior firepower. But note that US forces are still taking casualties in towns in Iraq and Afganistan. Look at Isreal's experience in Palestine, they can make incursions into the occupied territories but does it stop the suicide bombers?

In an urban environment up against lightly equipped perps with a death wish whose aim is to take a few yanks to hell with them, the technology provides less of an edge. I think in that envionment traditional soldiering skills keep you alive, not some roboyank suit.

If you look at military history superior firepower and equipment can count for zip if you are up against superior motivation and leadership. Look at the French and Americans in Vietnam, The lightly armed German paras in Crete, The British v French at Agencourt, etc etc.

Am I making myself clear now? Duh. Future wars will not be conventional wars, they will most likely be irregulars v regulars. ffs. *sigh*

I can just imagine the scenario, poor grunt struggling under the load of all this extra crap can hardly move on the battlefield, and some 12 year old raghead with an AK jumps up and fills the grunt full of lead.
