Breaking DVD encryption is important for fair use IMHO, and I doubt the guys who have worked on this are completely motivated by saving money buying DVDs.

  2. Re:iPhone is disappointing on iPhone, Apple TV Headline MacWorld Keynote · · Score: 1

I'm tired of hearing people complain about the 2yr contract. Many, if not most, sweet new phones often are released with an exclusive agreement with a particular provider and a 2yr contract. This isn't anything new in how new fancy phones are released. I imagine down the road Apple will want to sell these things to everyone who's not on Cingular and unwilling to switch, and it'll change, but to start, they're giving Cingular some business in all the people who will switch just to have this phone (myself included). Cheers, Int

  3. Re:What is Userlinux? on Bruce Perens on UserLinux and Ubuntu · · Score: 4, Informative

I just went to the UserLinux FAQ looking for the question, 'What is UserLinux?', and I was going to be all smug and reply with some 'read the FAQ you fool' type comment...

    but then I realized...

They don't even have that question on the FAQ. Wow, so yea, you're absolutely right.

  4. Other Addictions on Help for an MMORPG Addict? · · Score: 1

Not only are MMORPGs a dangerous thing to be addicted to, but I have a "friend" who is addicted to reading comment after mindless comment on some technology news site.

I don't know anything about it. But I'm worried for them.

  5. Rewriting Code Happens All the Time on 60% Of Windows Vista Code To Be Rewritten · · Score: 1

Whether or not the article is entirely accurate, I think people are over-reacting to how big a deal it is to rewrite 60% of the code in the operating system.

Now I know, that's a lot of code, but I routinely rewrite large portions of code in all the projects I work on. Many times I'll write some large chunk of code and many better design decisions become apparent during the process of writing the code, so I'll rewrite it from scratch.

Not only is the rewrite far superior code, but I write it in orders of magnitude less time than the original code.

That being said, I still have fairly low expectations of Vista, but rewriting code is no big deal, it should just make their product better.

  6. Re:Audiophile? on iTunes Music Store hits Billionth Download · · Score: 1

Interestingly enough, I had never noticed any major artifacts in my music purchased from iTMS or music I ripped from my CDs, but I recently got a pair of the Bose TriPort headphones and I've been noticing many more songs that have small artifacts here and there.

Now these headphones aren't even top of the line, but they are a step up from my white iPod ear-buds that were falling apart anyway.

  7. Double Standard on US Lawmakers to Keep Google Out of China? · · Score: 1

  8. Google pays less on Would You Take A Paycut for More Interesting Work? · · Score: 1

I would totally do it. I feel far too many people become complacent with their job and the settle with something that pays the bills but doesn't satisfy them. Also, I read somewhere that Google actually pays less than most of its competitors in the area, part because they offer such killer benefits, but also because most engineers who work there seem to really like what they do. Also, if its a small startup you're thinking of working for, try to work a small amount of equity into your compensation, that way if the company gets sold for $50 bajillion you'll get a slice.
