Masturbation! There's tons of it on the internets! You got free time!

How do you get started in that field? Do most of them have a financial background with some computer science, or the reverse?
Well, it's a big field. A good place to start is wilmott.com and get into their forums. I have found the community there to be very helpful. I have seen postings with requirements for developing in C++ and C# and some places, if they can see that you have the programming ability, will teach you (or pay for your education) to take you further. It's a field where companies look SO much to get the edge that there are whole companies building straighter fibers (or microwave links) to the exchanges across the US to shave milliseconds off the time of a transaction.
Financial engineering. Wall street is sucking them up to implement high frequency and not so high frequency trading apps. Doesn't hurt to have a mathematics degree on top of that which would probably jack you up even further.
I see this as being similar to when we needed to have all of our developers in my company working in an environment that absolutely matched the production environment. Just use VMWare on each individual machine, run an Ubuntu image in that and best of all use a Puppet script to customize it and give 'em the goodies they need. The beauty of this is once the kids screw it up (and let's hope they do, they're learning after all) then you can rebuild this back to a pristine machine in no time. Good luck!
When my company had to come up with a solution to have all of our developers to develop in an environment that absolutely mimicked the production server we used a combination of VMWare to run a version of the Ubuntu. Puppet made creating all of this really easy. It gave us the ability to completely blow away a machine and reconstitute in very little time.
Just add encryption. Hide in plain site. A new way for spies and terrorist to communicate! Reminds me of the Conet Project. More at Wikipedia. It's fascinating listening to the weird shortwave.
Obama says he'll veto it. House is Republican controlled and they probably voted against it simply because Obama is for it. Sometimes the reasoning (albeit very stupid) is sometimes pretty obvious.
Really, so what if a particular IP address accessed them? That proves nothing. Pointless. Non-story other than Prenda Law trying to scare people. "Oooooo we have your IP". Fuck Prenda Law. No, I'm not posting as an anonymous coward.
Why not? Fedex and UPS have perfected delivery of packages so why not the mail? I'm not sure what magic the USPS possesses that private industry couldn't do better anyway. Barring that, how about mail rates that make sense ? I live in Maryland and it doesn't make sense to me that I can send a piece of first class mail to New York City and Nome Alaska for the same price.
It never made sense that I could send a letter down the street or Nome Alaska for the same amount of money. Just seems like I shold be paying more. Otherwise why not just deregulate mail delivery? UPS, DHL and/or Fedex may be able to do it more efficiently.
I hope the Pi is the Apple in this comparison. Orange Pi sounds disgusting.
Well try this!
Orange Pie
Ingredients:
1 (9 inch) unbaked pie crust
3 egg yolks, beaten
1/2 cup white sugar
2 tablespoons all-purpose flour
1 tablespoon butter, melted
1 tablespoon grated orange zest
1 cup orange juice
3 egg whites
6 tablespoons white sugar
1 large orange, sliced in rounds
Directions:
1. Preheat oven to 450 degrees F (225 degrees C).
2. In a medium bowl, beat together egg yolks and 1/2 cup sugar until mixture is thick and lemon-colored. Add flour, melted butter, grated orange rind, and orange juice. Mix thoroughly, then pour into pastry shell.
3. Bake in preheated oven for 10 minutes. Reduce heat to 350 degrees F (175 degrees C) and bake an additional 25 minutes, until custard is set.
4. In a large glass or metal mixing bowl, beat egg whites until foamy. Gradually add 6 tablespoons sugar, continuing to beat until whites form stiff peaks. Spread meringue over pie, covering completely. Return to oven for 10 minutes, until meringue is golden brown. Cool before serving. Garnish with orange slices.
Maybe a fellow Marylander can help me out with this: if we are truly a democracy, why can't there be a state referendum to either vote Yay or Nay on these cameras? Where I live in Montgomery County it seems like there are speed cameras every mile or so. Would it REALLY be that tough to just have them removed? Seems like a no brainer that you could definitely get the signatures to put it up for a vote.
After all, "Juan Valdez" is a complete marketing dynasty. So effective that people actually think that Colombian coffee actually ** IS ** the richest in the world (it's not, Kona richer). In Colombia there are Juan Valdez coffee shops, etc. More power to them.
If you spent that much time in financial institutions, the think about Urbana, Maryland. Banner Life has a data center there, as well as Fannie Mae, and the Social Security Administration is moving a data center there. It's pretty good bucks, but far enough outside the DC metro area to be at least reasonable. Just an idea.
Time to consider buying Molycorp. (ticker: MCP). They are, I think, the sole US company involved in the space. Apparently the news hasn't caught onto this story yet but I made a bunch of $$$$ last year with this one. Just something to keep an eye on.
I find that Firefox, when it updates, invariably breaks my automated testing process with Selenium/WATIR. I always have to keep current release -1 on hand.:-(
Seriously, it would require you moving to Washington DC but I LOVE it here. I get several job offers a week and I'm very happy doing federal government contracting. We're surprisingly cutting edge in some agencies, I make six figures and I have more opportunity. I have no desire to do project management, etc etc. I just like to develop.
Access torrents via a client that supports proxying like Vuze. Then simply invest in a proxy service like BTGuard and have your IP cloaked through a non-US location (How else ya gonna get Game of Thrones?).
You can also go through good ole Usenet which has faster speeds than peer to peer like EasyNews. Happy torrenting!
It's aluminum foil. Al != Sn

We have learned the lessons of Kramerica and intern abuse.
Ubuntu worked for us but of course you could use CentOS as well.

The NSA Is Building the Country’s Biggest Spy Center (Watch What You Say) nearby in Bluffdale Utah. There is no coincidence.........
