I agree. I remember seeing on the cover of some pop science magazine... something about decoding SARS in five days. I don't remember the specifics, but what if everyone ran some distributed computing to help out? People could use their dsl connections for more besides routing pr0n! Seriously though, it's cat and mouse. Harness the resources.
The anti-trust case went to hell as soon as Big Business Bush got into office. Now that it seems we may actually have an election, things seem to be coming back to life.
Ah hell, it's not who casts the ballots, it's who counts them, right? 51 billion in cash reserves, Micro$loth will probably end up being the one.
Why do I get excited by viruses and tanking stocks? Long term freedom and prosperity.
The problem with that scenario is that it creates a fertile recruiting ground for people willing to blow themselves and others up. Growing up in poverty without choices or education fuels hate and will only reinforce extreme views.
It may restrict a terrorists reach...somewhat. But where there is a will, there is a way.
The situation will be worse. Do some research on water tables in Saudi Arabia. The water resources are non-renewable beyond roughly 1000 feet. In some places they are already digging wells past 4000. The timeline for water shortages is very similar to our own plans of reducing the US dependence on OPEC.
Fortunes were made very quick in the Middle East and I expect them to vanish in that arid region. With no money to import food and water, they are going to be at each others throats.
The middle east is made up of 22 countries, 370 million people with a combined GDP less than Norway's. What happens if you remove the oil?
They sway back and forth with Linux. They would love for the world to back away from Linux. They have been locking up good contracts and are the silent player to watch. It wouldn't surprise me to hear Sun announce you should purchase an SCO license or Solaris.
I am seeing the trend go both ways. Shortened hours at one, extending hours at the next bank. I've been charged 2 dollars to talk to a teller at one bank, and it's free at the next. One thing I CANNOT recall is seeing more than two tellers at once. If there is a line and someone is doing something more than cashing a check...that ATM machine starts looking convenient.
I had another strange moment about a month ago. I was checking out at a grocery store and I had alot of produce. The cashier had a rather obvious learning disability and it took longer than you would expect for her to figure out the codes for the vegetables. I never go through the self scan when I have alot of veggies because you have to wait for an employee to verify your not typing in a cheaper product code before weighing. Anyways, after watching her and looking at the self-scans to the left of me, I was left with a feeling that her days of being absorbed by our economy are very limited. The state will be her most probable meal ticket in ten years.
Just think! I could have my fruit verified from Bangalore via webcam. Then a machine using face recognition technology to decipher apples from oranges will replace them.
Population density is exactly the reason. Yes, they get some cheap broadband and VoIP, but I'd rather keep my fixed costs such as rent affordable. I don't think I could afford to live in Japan by myself.
I used to have a roommate from Japan. He won't move back because he is so used to the open spaces we have in our homes. Not to mention the open spaces we have between our homes that would be worth how much in Tokyo?
In reply to the game....
A buddy and I once shaved our chests and glued the hair to our palms. We then proceeded to purchase cheap items at many outlets.
A little something for the arsenal, since your buying vaseline.
They develop for a certain set of hardware. Then they refine based upon feedback from controlled groups(markets). It's a business model, rather than just throwing it to the wild...
When I see apt for mac, I will spend my way to heaven. Finally, my not so geeky friends will think I have something cool because it'll always be multimedia friendly out of the box. Meanwhile, I'll have all my little command line goodies.
There is a dual mac in my future. I can feel it.

Area 51 is a gigantic toxic waste site. It is a place where all the waste products from these test crafts are kept or burned. Every day that this base is kept secret money is saved. If it were to open tomorrow to the public, it would be a superfund site. That's all you'll ever know.
I bought a Verizon phone last summer. By signing a 2 year contract I could save fifty bucks on a nice flippy phone. Sweet, so I sign up and got the phone.
I sent in a copy, rather than an original of the UPC. The company taking care of the rebate(definitely not Verizon, I forget their name) would not accept that, so they sent me a letter.
I needed to respond in letter, with the original UPC, within 7 days of the printing of the letter I received. It arrived on a Saturday, when I was out of town. Saturday was day 5.
Statistically, they know they can screw some of us out of our money.
And all I have to show for it is this shitty caller-id full of "unavailable" numbers from solicitors and piles of junk mail.
I was just discussing this idea last night in company fairly educated on the subject.
Yes, you get a great bloom of CO2 absorbing algae, but when it dies, it sinks and decomposes. Then it absorbs oxygen, giving off CO2 and Methane. Methane is a greenhouse gas 25X as effective as CO2. The ratio of CO2 to Methane given off is dependent upon water temperatures.
Yes, it would be a grand experiment with some huge results. I first read about this 5 years ago. The article talked about what one barge loaded with powdered iron and fans to disperse it could do. It sounded amazing.

It won't kill linux. None of this will kill linux. Ever.
It'll drive more innovation, development, and in turn- jobs...off the shores of the US.
Big business at it's finest. Screwin' the little guys.

Take Microsoft's money! I hope they have the Rolling Stones playing "Start Me Up" in the background costing MS millions for the rights.
Or, a good 'ol parade of "cum soaked teen gets stuffed by yearbook staff" links would be amusing.
It's just not going to work. It would be nice if it did. They'd shut the F*** up until they finish themselves off.

Question for a press conference:
Have the aliens made any attempts to communicate, and if so, do they seem hostile?
I know a guy that went to plumbing school. He's doing really good.

How about Stego banged?
Thanks, Hoss! Steve Jobs will get back to you as well.

They got it off of BSD!
Windows is almost ready for prime time.
oh look, just in. Things do change.
A planar playing field is upon us.
I was thinking they were going to implode soon.
Business models can change....
No way. Excellent!

The review hammered the thing. Yet it got a 6.6/10?
What kind of hardware is a 8 or 9 gonna get you?
If you pay lower premiums, the cost of a prescription is going to be higher when the bugs attack.
Using a Windows host, 'iis' like being a smoker. It will catch up with you in the long run.
