Yeah, but in Japan, you could have a $100 bill and still not have enough to both ride on the train and buy a cup of coffee. Of course, even the average data-entry clerk gets paid in their choice of precious gems or bags of money, so $60 is chump change to you Japanese. I mean, the only thing you guys have trouble affording is your own giant mecha, but with payment plans and interest rates the way they are, it's realistic to expect one in every garage by 2007.

Either that, or they figure you anime fans for a bunch of suckers.

Anime isn't very high on the procurement list of most video stores. Hell, it's hard enough to find DVDs of movies I want to rent. The only option for a lot of people is Netflix. I tried that, but found that, because of mailing lag, I had to watch movies as soon as I got them to make it worth my while. I don't have time for that. I'm busy wasting my time on /.

Shit, I'm running OS X now, I don't know what to do. I used to have 3 or 4 programs I could depend on to crash my machine.

And sometimes, you get really close to your bugs. Certain apps, you'd have to do things in a specific order - I was like a nerd Fonzie. Hit a couple keys, go "Ayyy," and watch the girls in the next cubicle swoon. But alas, now I have no bugs to complain about. Luckily, there's always UI issues!

  8. Re:Alan Moore on League Of Extraordinary Gentlemen Trailer · · Score: 1

It's funny, a few people recommended "League" as his second best (best being From Hell, the best $40 you can spend in comics, unless you're buying $40 of Sandman issues, or starting an Akira collection), so after reading FH I read League and Promethea and stopped, cause they both kinda sucked. Maybe I'll try Watchmen one of these days.

This is the kind of subjectivity that has no place in real journalism. Zealots are Apple's real threat. So many people hear "Apple" and think "using a Powerbook at a Starbucks, sipping a latte, dressed in black." Apple users are art-fags to them, and derogatory comments about "Windoze" aren't going to do anything but make it worse.

How about some fucking objectivity? Lemmie give you a tip, Sparky - people will take you more seriously when you say "Apple's new technology poses a real threat to MS" if you don't follow it with "I'm getting a sex change so I could maybe have Steve's baby"

  18. A Britney album isn't really a Britney album on Don't Sever A High-Tech Lifeline for Musicians · · Score: 1

When you listen to Britney's latest, you get the songwriting talents of some fat middle-aged man (SFMAM), the instrument-playing talents of SFMAM, the recording talents of SFMAM, the mixing talents of SFMAM, and some of Britney Spears' voice, filterd by SFMAM.

Guess what? These fat middle-aged men, in most cases, can do everything you say, and more. They can play fusion jazz like Tom Scott. Did it ever occur to you that they write pop songs because they *like* it? "Baby One More Time" is a hella good song. Everything about it is done with such skill and perfection, and it's all thanks to these middle-aged men who have been working in the industry for god-knows-how-long, and have honed their skills as sharp as a razor. If you really appreciated MUSIC, you'd be able to see this. Why don't they say the album is by "Rob Reverb" then, featuring Britney on vocals? It should be obvious. Would you buy an album with a picture of SFMAM on the cover? Furthermore, I'd bet these guys are happy and settled down; they don't want to go touring.

Fusion jazz "excites" a lot fewer people than pop music. I'm a big fan of all genres, and I pretty much can't stand it, aside from some Miles Davis. It's like these guys are mastrubating to their Berklee degrees. Please. You don't need to impress me with diminished 9th hooey. It's boring.

But fusion jazz artists like playing it, and there are people who like to listen to it. So where's the problem? Stop being a music nazi.

Or what if your friend, who owns the latest Eminem CD, comes over your house, downloads it and plays it for you, and then deletes it? Or rather, how can they ever prove that that didn't happen?

I would guess that they only will prosecute people who upload stuff. Actually, I would guess that it's just a scare tactic; or maybe they'll pull a Mitnick and throw some random college kid in jail for 5 years, just to make an example of him. Yikes though.

  25. Re:Switch == no problem on Is Windows Ready For Joe Longneck? · · Score: 3, Insightful

I can recall many "non-geek" folks (e.g. secretaries, reception clerks, managers) coping perfectly adequately with DOS commands in the course of their work.

Yeah, but someone had to teach them what the commands were. I'm sure they were very apprehensive about it until they got the hang of it. With a GUI, you can click around and explore with confidence that you won't break anything.

It's not that users are dumber now, they just expect it to be obvious how to use their computer. And it should. I mean, if you're just starting out you have to read through man pages just to learn how to create a new directory. That's not right. Time spent learning how to do something that should be obvious is time well wasted.

That said, the CLI has its place, and I think it's just SO COOL how I can open up a terminal in OS X, or if I want, totally ignore it.
